The best protection against the enemy's fire is a well-directed fire from our own guns. --Adm. Farragut GENERAL QUARTER OR MANY MONTHS we practiced shooting the 5 guns off San Clemente. General Quarters meant only a drill . . . some sagebrush torn up and more empty brass to haul back home. But our day came in late April when the guns finally roared for real . . . 550 rounds worth. During our naval gunfire support missions in South Vietnam, a total of 107 Viet Cong structures were destroyed and 93 were damaged. A Rogers first took place one busy day, when Mount 51 fired at VC positions while replenishment ammunition was supplied by helo on the fantail. Our days in the Tonkin Gulf saw us ready to counter attack from any source as well as provide assistance to downed American pilots when necessary. The climax of our time in the Gulf came on July lst as Rogers was attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats while on patrol in international waters. After de- stroyer controlled Navy jets from the USS Hancock sank the attackers, the word was passed to secure from gen- eral quarters for the last time this cruise. Headed for home at last, we were now full-fledged Tonkin Tigers. I6 '
