S, A . , 1 . Commissioned 26 March 1945, ROGERS travelled Southward to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for her shakedown training cruise. Ready to join the worldwarll fighting force, she then headed for the Pacific. But termination of hostilities found the ROGERS in Pearl I-larbor.Cheated of combat action, the 876 completed the first of many patrols with the U. S. Seventh Fleet. - Peacetime years saw ROGERS in the original atomic bomb tests at Eniwetok Atoll in 1948. A year later, she assisted in the evacuation of American civilians to Japan from China. During the Korean Conflict ROGERS par- ticipated ln shore bombardment, blockade, and patrol missions. ' Converted from DDR to DD in 1963, compliments of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, USS ROGERS CDD 8762 became equipped with the latest anti-submarine weapons as well as an extensive new roster of communi- cations, sonar, and radar equipment. Since her conversion, ROGERS has made two de- ployments to WESTPAC in support of U.S. policy in Vietnam. She has served as a carrier escort, naval gun- fire support ship and a rescue vehicle for downed Ameri- can pilots. ROGERS is currently a unit of Destroyer Squadron Seventeen and is commanded by CDR C. D. Clark, USN. ff., s -- - -' 41,-r ,, Z., Y ,..--.s.,,.-.... UNITED STATES SHIP ROGER 100876 crzulseeoouc Porzeworzo To the men of ROGERS: Our deployment to WESTPAC is completed, and we can look back with pride at the job that was done. The work came in long stretches and never seemed to let up just when we most needed a rest. But such was the nature and the importance of our task-- and you proved yourselves equal to it. Our ship was honored with a letter of commendation from Commander Task Group 70.8 for outstanding overall performance in WESTPAC, Each man aboard RGGERS can be assured that this citation was a direct tribute to his own contribution and dedication during deployment. It is hoped that this book will recall memories of our cruise, both the days Cand nightsb of hard work and the brief moments of relaxation. To those whom we left behind to share the burden of long separation--our wives, families, and friends--we dedicate this book with admiration and affection. COMMANDER USN H 5 -wg-11 ANUARY 29th. A day of goodbyes for all of us. Ahead lay a few thousand miles of ocean, afew thousand slices of Rogers steak Croast beef, in civilian talkj and six months of free popcorn. Radio Free Rogers, and just plain hard work. For some this would be the first cruise to WESTPAC, Boot camp stories of Hong Kong, Yokosuka, and the wonders of San Miguel beer were about to be tested and prepared for reissue in improved form. Sony tape recorders for 3145? Spending that combat pay won't be hard at all! For others this would be the second, third, or even the seventh trip across the International Date Line. Maybe this time that old A school buddy who's on the Ranger now will show up at the Petty Officer's Club in Subic. A new coffee cup in Yoko. A Mongolian dinner in Hong Kong. Another crack at the E-'7 exam in February . . . and a chance to shoot the guns at something more challenging than San Clemente sage. Set the special sea and anchor detail. Feel a kind of channel fever? Well . . . maybe just a little. ' I ,-' ' ag! 414 . 5 A QU KW Y ,M DA TUG The band plays Anchors Aweigh M ilgxef : . ,,,-,enee..,.rfee+1f2 ., ...vw --- v AY ,wa -,...... But unfortunately, the assorted delights of midnight replenishment are hard to capture on film. We were a thirsty ship. The Thirty Knot Ghost of the Vietnam Coast needed a drink every two or three days and we were forced to oblige. ln our 49 refuelings, we received a Rogers cruise record of 3,204,339 gallons of NSFO, This is about 4OfZp of the total fuel received since leaving Charleston Naval Shipyard in June 1964. We were hungry, too. ln spite of occasional rumb- lings of discontent from the mess decks, an amazing amount of food was consumed. We took on jumbo olives from the Sacramento, six-way beef from the Pictor, and crunchy peanut butter from the Regulus. As for spare parts to restock our rapidly emptying storerooms . . . well . . . that's another story. As our Supply Officer would say, Have patiencehace. !7 Y, 4 Rigging the high line The after station all-stars Z G lm' An F A 5 S JP-5 flows skyward II OOD MORNING, Fetch 51, you have a green deck . . . my wind is 30 degrees to port at 18 knots. And so began another busy day at Bullseye International. Thirsty helos were everywhere, it seemed. In April alone we refueled 37 of them with 11,362 gallons of JP-5. In June a record 55 helos--the most ever refueled by a Seventh Fleet destroyer in one month--were given 17,191 gallons from our tanks. I2 t There were other birds in the air, too. Helos bringing mail, spare parts, and chaplains . . . and taking away letters to home, personnel for transfer, and our beloved ailing Operations Officer. Even our own DASH got in the spirit of things by spreading its rotors in re- alistic full flight on several occasions. The air age has truly invaded the destroyer Navy . . and we were a part of it all the way. :Qi T T 1 jf, Fetch 51 as seen from the ECM deck SET THE HELO INFLIGHT REFUELING DETAIL T, - 'ia T i w, , T Gvvw, sh , 1 af? 125. Farragut GENERAL QUARTER OR MANY MONTHS we practiced shooting the 5 guns off San Clemente. General Quarters meant only a drill . . . some sagebrush torn up and more empty brass to haul back home. But our day came in late April when the guns finally roared for real . . . 550 rounds worth. During our naval gunfire support missions in South Vietnam, a total of 107 Viet Cong structures were destroyed and 93 were damaged. A Rogers first took place one busy day, when Mount 51 fired at VC positions while replenishment ammunition was supplied by helo on the fantail. Our days in the Tonkin Gulf saw us ready to counter attack from any source as well as provide assistance to downed American pilots when necessary. The climax of our time in the Gulf came on July lst as Rogers was attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats while on patrol in international waters. After de- stroyer controlled Navy jets from the USS Hancock sank the attackers, the word was passed to secure from gen- eral quarters for the last time this cruise. Headed for home at last, we were now full-fledged Tonkin Tigers. I6 ' . . '9'V., fi,-fv F' ' .Q tit' f,g 'F' n A--,p-wir' ,Q , 4-,..M-cu. H, . . Lifer heads for home ISPLAYING undaunted enthusiasm to make up for their limited number of practice sessions, the Rogers softball team was a credit to the ship all the way. The team began the season by soundly defeating the Coontz 15 to 3 at Pearl Harbor. Later action saw our men face the Filipino Athletic Club of the Hong Kong Softball League, Rogers athletes played an excellent game in that Kowloon classic, but were edged 6 to 3. Improving with each game, our men decided to challenge the virtually shore-based USS Ajax at Subic Bay. The result was less than glorious, with the Ajax winning 15 to 5. We played next against the Shimoda A11- Stars at the Black Ship Festival. The team looked much better but was still edged 17 to 13. Having missed spring training due to certain oper- ational limitations, the Rogers softball team made its final stand at Yokosuka. Lack of practice and errors cost us the first game against the USS Osbourne 14-12. But the season did end in victory. After six months of prodding the officers and chiefs finally accepted the crew's softball challenge. The crew toyed briefly with their opponents, and won handily 12 to 10. CEd. note: The above paragraph does not necessarily represent the official and objective opinion of this cruise- book. Anyway . . . wait 'til next year, Meanwhile, the officers hereby challenge the crew to a slotcar race anywhere, anytime.
