From Appliance Re- pair to Welding we are equipped to teach you a trade. We develop your skills and co- ordinate your motivation for that Putnam spirit. Unlike the other schools we thrive on the potential of your ability in sports, academics and voca- tional courses. With modern- ized equipment and the high- est number of computers in the Springfield area really shows why Putnam is No. 1. The skills these students are acquiring to- day will make them “the work- er of tomorrow.” — oa, 2 et ane cial neg 9 Ip t atime «te 16 Mrs. Pesce Class Advisers Mr. Fontana Cindy Duncan President Ruben Nunez Vice-President Reginald Smith Treasurer Class Officers Lynda Lockwood Secretary Marie Hanson Girl Marshal Ricardo Ocasio Boy Marshal Class of 1981 Keith Bennevento Linda Picard Thomas Enos Sally Twining Carpentry Fashion Carpentry Print Daniel Gotta Carpentry Robert Jeffrey Health Bob DeCarlo signs senior picture. Rather than refer to it as the senior Yearbook we refer to it as the school Yearbook. The biggest change was the inclusion of ev- ery student in group pictures in all the shop areas. Consequently, Yearbook sales doubled this year. The staff wishes to thank the advisers and coaches for the written material found in greater amounts in this edition. It meant more work in editing and copyfitting, but we have long advocated a departure from a strictly pictorial record. We are grateful to Mrs. Christman in helping with typing assignments. It wouldn’t be a Year- book without pictures and thanks are extended to Grenier Studios, the official school photographers. Their work was doubly difficult this year in having to supply pictures of an extra 40 pages and do this for a February 15th deadline. This will allow for a May 9th Gary Kratovil Sheila Blanks delivery date and a 32-page insert to be mailed in the fall. Kudos to Mr. Kwajewski’s 12th Grade students who put this book together. A great job! Charlie Proctor, Dave McKenzie, and Judy Messer contributed their camera skills. 47 Mrs. DeFlaun Adviser Mr. Aycock Adviser Sophomores Shown above are the 10th Grade officers, lef t to right: President Lisa Barlow, Vice-President Juan Dixon and Treasurer Sharon Jones. Sec- retary Paige Brace was absent at picture taking. 48 The 10th grade class got off to an earlier start this year by holding their office elections in December. The ob- ject of electing officers was to gain class unity and have the whole class working together to help lower the prices of their graduation. It is not up to the offi- cers to do all of the work, but they are there to act only as leaders of the class. The officers planned many activities; trying to have fun, b ut at the same time raising money for their senior prom and picnic. The activities included skat- ing parties, dances, tag sales, bake sales, flowers sales, and many others planned through the year. The class of 1983 is looking forward to their junior and senior years with great anticipation. Mrs. Gitlen Adviser The Class of 1982 started the new year off, by having an open meeting to introduce the class officers. Presi- dent, Linda Garrett, Vice President, Marla Craigwell, Secretary, Marie Jolly, Treasurer, Karen Pollard, Boy Marshall, Bob Gayle, and Girl Mar- shall, Lieanne O'Brian. Homeroom representatives were also elected. Our first event was a successful Roller Skating Party at the U.S.A. The Election Day Bakesale was very prof- itable. Many students gave of their time greeting the voters to our school. The Christmas Flower Sale also helped to raise money for the Junior Class. A Spring Fashion Show imple- mented by Putnam students was a major event. Putnam T-shirts and Beaver mas- cots were sold by the class to raise money for next years Senior activi- ties. Mr. Baker Adviser The 11th Grade officers are shown above, left to right: Robert Gayle, boy marshall, Marlo Crai gwell, vice-president, Marie Jolly, secretary, Karen Pollard, treasurer. Absent when photo was taken were President Linda Garrett and Girl Marshal Gianna O’Brien. 49 “dayeus Waqoy ‘AEP BresD ‘saya Asey ‘Aesuny piaeq “SWIIJIM [PRY ‘OUuRIDI[a4 URN ‘eyeAeZ ODSIDUeIY :MOJ PUOIIS ‘eUdaZeIeD asOf ‘PpadIaW aBJ1O{ ‘zeIG aso{ ‘aA07] sajieYyD ‘Zan3upoy opsed1y ‘epeZO] asof ‘ZNID Opa :14811 OF Ya] ‘MO4s S414 “I “AIG ‘LL Pu OL SOPRA — AGOG OLNV ® oe ‘neapoqiyys ueydays ‘ydueig BNAAA ‘AROW puerjOY ‘Jaysiy puowAeY ‘a}Ia3eg JaqoY :MoO4l PY] “IWa|es JUaDUIA “IW ‘OBRNURS OIARIDO ‘NaleE|eYy YINed ‘RIALY ASO{ :MO4 PUOdaS “zaNBipoy sixayy ‘Ay WeIOW uyof ‘ueydars 1109 :14811 0} 19] ‘MO Isst4 I] “AIG ‘LL PUB OL SaPEIN. — FONVITddV 4 UIAIIS IWa]eS “IW ‘UOIG PJeMP ‘YIWS UWAy “ARLINYY IHW 3431s OF day MO4J }SJI4 SIAR PlAeq ‘XOUUa] UYOf ‘YdUpPly jaeydIW ‘ZO soyiey ‘ZOUIWIf YURI ‘BOIYILW Opa ‘ZaYDURS [AON ‘ZaJag URA| ‘Aauayy ueyieuof :mol Puodas “BO|NOg PJ ‘O[JNseD janueyy ‘sweep AA UIAJAY ‘ZaI}91IND Opsediy ‘ZajeZUODH ueigey ‘eouan3i4 OZUOJap]| ‘PsOjmesD sowef 24311 0} Io] ‘MOI ISUI4 | “AIG ‘LL pue OL sapeIy — AGO OLNV 10}NIYSUI 0.1}SE ) OPJRASCE :MOJ PUOdaS ‘ajUP}g jalueg ‘PNeYydIp TAG “LL pue OL SepeIQ — FONVITddV UO IBUIYSeM Gog ‘OUNR|Og aUljapy ‘1aIR|1S W :MOd Psiyy “AOlaaoq sazyenA ‘SIAeG QUARM ‘OABUIOZD O1 N{ ‘UaIeH Pq ‘9DNQU|Ig Dy ‘AYO, [IYUd JON] Piveq ‘eassOD sawef :mos Puodsas “Ualig,O WO] ‘UNIeW sawe{ ‘Osudsy OlUOJUY ‘Oye? They are the approximately 160 boys and girls who enter Putnam Voc-Tech as 9th Graders in a unique program. The students spend one marking period in each of the departments named and around April decide on a vocational direction. They fill out cards showing their first and second choices of the 23 different shops at Putnam. As one-year veterans of the school they are given choice preference over incoming 10th Graders. Each year between 80-85% of the Explorers obtain the shop of their choice. WOODWORKING EXP. — Grade 9, Div. Il. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education The physical education program at Putnam is very diversified and utilizes a variety of activities and facili- ties. All our programs are co-educational and elected by the students own choice. In fall, activities include, touch football, soccer, and areobic dance. Winter ac- tivities include basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, ping-pong, gymnastics, bowling, badminton, and arch- ery. Spring activities include tennis, softball, and ulti- mate frisbee. Calistitics are also included as a daily warm up for all our activity. 76 Mary Underwood David Wilson Lillian Roldan 1980 Graduates Ooops! Due to a clerical error the students pictured or listed on this page were omitted from the 1980 Yearbook. The staff of the Yearbook expresses its sincerest apology to them, their families and friends. John Lennon was starting over when yet it all ended tragically at 11:33 p.m. on December 8, 1980. John was shot to death by Mark David Chapman in front of his home at the Dakota Apartment just across the street from Central Park. The world mourned. Beginning his music career in small clubs in Liverpool, England, to his superstardom as the leader of the Beatles and then his five year retire- ment to take care of his son, Sean, John sent out the message to ““Give peace a chance”. He was a revolutionary when people were in love, a teach- er when people didn’t want to feel pain or hurt. But he wasn’t an idol, he was John. We'll all remember the day John died and this is the way it will have to be. A time cf confusion, love, and mourning. We all know our state of minds now weeks later. But we’ll always carry the weight a long time. Yes, John Lennon wanted everyone to give peace a chance and now John has his peace. iy) The Drama Club’s production crew is shown above, first row, left to right: Bart Smith, Dave McKenzie, Beth White. Putnam Honor Society welcomes back several of last years members, and of course, congratulates the new members who have earned all A and B final yearly grades for 1979-80 to join our 1980-81 Honor Society Fellowship. The officers: Steven Schultz, president; Paula Newman, vice-president; Kathleen Sumwalt, secretary; and Laurie Mathews, treasurer are newly elected by a membership of fifty-five fellow students. They have worked diligently to keep the standards of the Honor Society high and at the same time motivate more students to “get’’ those grades to join. The Honor Society under the advisorship of Mrs. Evelyn Grace is a self supported club. They have sponsored various fund raisers including two major candy sales which profited this club more than $500.00. The club’s annual luncheon and awards including a scholarship fund which began last year, and an end of the year activity trip plan to share these proceeds. Some of the members of the team around which the offense and defense were built are Dave Minie, Manny Silva, Mike Sarnelli, Steve Schultz, Jack Martens, Mark Stebbins endititn Lavoy. Most of these same boys were with Mr. Badger three years ago when they struggled to a 3-13-1 season. They reversed those stats this season to 13-3-1. The season ended in a fiercely contested match with Cathe- dral in the playoffs in double overtime. Cathedral went on to win the Western Mass. title. Scott, Coach Dan Balicki Football Mr. Balicki, the Putnam High football coach, related before pe season started that his players were not overly big but he sensed a feeling of dedication. The play- ers executed their assignments methodically in a combined team effort. This was borne out when the season began and the Beavers rattled off three straight wins. The team could have extended their win streak but for some “home town” decisions by the referees. It is not the purpose of the year- book staff to make excuses for the team’s losses but that and key in- juries against the better teams in the league brought about some close defeats. The Beavers opened the season by beating Palmer, 16-0. Mark Jones featured a strong defense with 14 tackles. Kelm Junior tallied both TD’s to provide the offense. McCann Tech of North Adams was shut out next by a score of 20-0. Junior and DeSouza featured on _ offense. Putnam demolished Pioneer, 48- 0, in its next game to remain un- beaten, untied and unscored upon. The Beavers played good games against their next oppo- nents but were beaten by 16-0, 12-6, 21-12, and 14-6. The team played Commerce to a 0-0 tie for their fourth shutout of the year. Rick Caldwell and Kelm Junior made the Kosior League All-Star team. ee ee Me Penta Oita eS ctl yee , php A eee pend § Bare eet, ee a ad pues Pye oat fae ser Basketball The 1980-81 Basketball team had 50 candidates tryout in mid- November.
