We here at Roger Bacon often refer to our entire operation as the body Bacon Indeed, we are made up of many parts. each part enabling us to offer our body new and exciting experiences. Look inside; we hope you find us physically fit, Roger Bacon High School 4320 Vine Street Cincinnati, Ohio 45217 4 Openingj'l Physically, the heart is that vital organ that pumps blood to all of the body's extremities, but at Roger Bacon the heart is much more than a physical funcrionary, One of the primary purposes of Roger Bacon is to nurture the heart spiritually, Incorporated in all of out activities here is the intention of instilling in every young man or woman that attends our school the appreciation of their own spiritual self. Our hopes are that each soul that leaves us will carry on the incessant investigation of the spiritual world facing him every day. As well, another of our goals is to produce logically-thinking adults who spread the Christian values that we teach at Roger Bacon. Still, at Roget Bacon, we like to do things in a lighthearted way some of the time, otherwise we would be plagued by heattaches . Of course, many of our hearteto-heatt conversations with other members of the Body Bacon prove to be hearttending. This hearty prose must come to an end before we all die of heartburn. JUOpening By the time this yearbook comes out, the new addition to Roger Bacon High School should be complete. Over two million dollars has gone into the new build- ing's construction - but it should be well worth it. The new building includes the athletic department: storage for equipment, coaches' offices, locker rooms, and a new gymnasium. It also includes concession stands for the gym. The highlight of the new building, however, is the new band and chorus room. This addition is greatly needed at our schoool. The problem with the new building you ask tYou did, don't deny itD? Well, there is the little mix-up about the completion deadline. Also, what should we call this bundle of cement? New Building just doesnit make it. Waive always thought that the Roger Bacon Yearbook Staff Memorial Building was nice, but we dont think it'll go over too well. Openingfs The brain is defined as the organ that is the center of the nervous system and controls neural coordination as well as thought. This essential organ that is protected by the skull finds exercise in classrooms at Roger Bacon. Often the blank state that reveals a dormant cerebral organ changes into an eager grin and a hand will be lifted in anticipation of asking an all-important question or an5weting a probing teacher's inquiry. Of course, there are times when the Roger Bacon scholar has so many thoughts at one particular time that the head begins to spin, toss and turn as if it were on a wild ocean; she is ovbiously having the notorious brainstorm. IVOpening The legs are long, fleshy appendages, extending from the hips to the ground, and, when moved, walk around. Legs possess a natural abiiity to look good when they are tanned golden-brown, encased in a pair of Eshnet hose, or bathed in baby oil, The cross country team at Roger Bacon specialized in good-lookin, legs moving around. In fact, some experts theorize that Cross country was developed in part to allow men to show off their legs without raising any eyebrows amongst the general public. Openingfj The shoulders are those parts of the body that Connect the arm to the trunk of the body. Roger Bacon Football tried to keep those shoulders active on the footbali field. More than one shoulder frazzled after throwing long passest One must conclude that shoulders are important parts of the football player's body; why else would so many pads rest upon it! The football teams at Roger Bacon may not have had stupendous seasons this year, but we consider our athletes heads and shoulders above their competition. 61'Opening , Tee Hf! . . . - , .L I Whereas the legs are an incredibly desirable part of the body, the knees are to the legs what Cleveland is to Ohio - a mistake. Not even Christie Brinkley has been able to do much for knees, which is why photographers try to make sure they get shots of the backs of her legs as often as possible. The only people who can make a good case for knees is Roger Bacon's Volleyball Team, who tend to de- pend on their knees to enable them to jump for a Spike, or flex for a bump. Indeed, the knees may well be the unsung heroes on our volleyball team's heroic rise to the tap. Openingh The eyes, which, on most of us, are found on the head, are by definition the organs of sight. As Such, they tend to be one of the most used organs of the human body, especially by those who wish to see the wonderful world in which most of us live. Lets face it guys - without eyes, most of us, with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder, would be lost. We would miss out on the great experiences that can be offered to us by that which is visible, such as beautiful Sunsets, sparkling streams, and cold oatmeal. Fortunately, they are present to do such things for us. Since our eyes are so kind and generous to us, we should treat them with a little more resPectl We could do this in many ways. One way would be using them to take a look at the fascinating teamwork of the Roger Bacon Girls' Basketball Team. By using our eyesight to observe the eye-catching cooperation and spirit of the team, we can treat them to an eye-opening experience from which they will profit greatly. Eye believe that we should all give our eyes the advantage of being eyewitnesses to the successes of the team. SlOpening Look up hand in the dictionary. The Fats: thing you'll see is: The end of the forearm beyond the wrist especially adapted for grasping, and comprising the palm fingers, and thumb. Hands can be used for a lot more than grasping, how- ever. They can be used to clap, hit, pick the nose, or most anything else you can imaginet Keep looking, though, and you'll End another pertinent definition; HA member of a group, company, of crew. 50, we can say that there are many hands on the Roger Bacon Boys Basketball T eam. The team, along with our coaching staff, has handed the school an exciting season. I could hand you more of this, but I have to hand this in before someone back- hands me into submission. So, let's have a big hand for out Boy's Basketball Team. Clap clap clap. Openingl9 The foot faccording to the dictionaryh is the foundation upon which the body moves. It is covered up with socks, stuffed into shoes, and trodden upon constantly. The poor foot is usually ignored. Few of us realize how important the foot is. Hey, without feet, how could we walk? Without feet we would not be able to run, jump, kick our brothers and sisters, 0: experience any of the other little joys of life. Among those joys is sports. There is one sport which is practically devoted to the foot, one sport which gives the foot the attention it dCSCI'VCS. That sport is soccer, But alas, I fear Tm running out of space; I'd better put my foot down and stop here. UK footnote: The EncD .dV 5533-: nwma'u. x. v '2 ii; ' Ll 1 . :1 r . e . 1 , 1. M a ....;.q;- .ertf'f-I . ... The head is that part of the body that sits on top of the shoulders and is said to be the center of man- kind's intelligence. It is frequently the element that determines whether we are labeled as attractive or are said to be so ugly that we scare dogs. The Spartans used theit heads to get ahead on the soccer field. An observer could often see them using a good old bump on the noggin to make headway towards a victory. Fans Considered the soccer players to be heading the pack in both sportsmanship and performance. Still, there were a few headaches that the squads want to remedy when they head up their seasons next year. Every- one is planing to be head over heals for soccer. You'll find all the information in the headlines. Openingjll Lips are the organs of speech Without lips we would not be able to speak coherently; instead of mumbling tmly in response to teacher's questions we would mumble outside of the classroom as welL There are those among us who realize that the lips are more than just instruments of speech, those persons who comprise the band. Many among us pay the band mere lip service without realizing the true contributions the band makes to the Body Bacon. Without their dextrous use of their lips Roger Bacon would not be as well known or so highly regarded. The band is one of the primary reasons that Roger Bacon is such a great school. Let's give three cheers for the Roger Bacon Band! 1 ZfOpening Thc throat, by definition, is the part of the neck in front of the spinal column. This is rather lackluster definition; the throat would seem to be a rather dull part of the body. It does have one redeeming grace, however, for the throat houses that which gives us the ability to communicate - our voice box Our ability to speak, to whisper, to yell, to sing - all would be nonexistent. The world would be a dull place indeed without these things. Voices have the ability to attract our attention. to excite us. to entertain us. This column is devoted to those who through their voices make the world a nicer place in which to live. Openinng The belly, according to Webster, is the stomach and its surrounding entrails. Now you're probably wondering what the word belly and the Christmas Semi-Formal have in common. tSO am I, to tell the truthj But in keeping with the insipid style of the previous introductory paragraphs, I will now have the gaul to compare these two disparate objects with as many puns as you can stomach. Now those of thejunior and Senior classes who had the guts to ask someone to the SemiAFormal stated they just ate up the well rounded Christmas activity. In fact many resPectable students were seen belly Hopping around the dance floor or laying belly up in chairs on account of sheer exhaustion, and there was no bellyaching when the opinion was raised this was truly an exciting and rewarding event In fact almost everyone who went gave it TUMS approvaL As an appendix I would like to note that this gut wrenching article was about as bad as I could swallow; so please pass the ROLAIDS. IIHOpening The hip is that part of the body that is found on either side of the body, joining the legs to the upper torso The hips are constantly being hidden by flattering skirts. Many of the female gender find it valuable to bind themseives in girdles to lessen the bulges of these body parts, I suppose you could say that they are hippoedf' Many hips were swinging at this year's annual Roger Bacon Christmas Semiformal. Yes, one could see hips dancing and swaying on the dance floor as well as exhibiting frolicsome behavior off of the dance floor. This particular night of broad-hipping it took place on DeCember 17, 1985. As far as the school's data reveals, no one threw a hip out of socket, although reliable sources say that many hips were given some hard knockst There were only a few hyper hippers there. After all, hippiehood went out a few years ago. OpeningXlS Prepare yourself for a journey into the anatomy of Roger Bacon. Yes, we are The Body Bacon. and we are proud of all Y of our parts. Our goal is to have you understand the body 18852385 language at Roger Bacon, We here strive to reach a state in NCIPSTCIST PFRIARS which we can honestly say that we are the embodiment ofthe JOHN EfNCINNEQViNCE Christian way Yet, nevm fear, you won't need a bodyguard to read this book. With all puns aside, enjoy our book. BUTZ, SORRY, THE GLASS SUPPER DOESN'T FIT ALOHA GRRRR!!!! FOUL!!! The yearbook staff tot at least two of the yearbook staff who are currently trapped in a tedious double period of Physics with nothing but this pen and paper to amuse themy would like to take this space and explain why there is a yearbook, explain what we do in yearbook, and generally give the most esteemed year- book editorial staff as many times as possible, and most of all to Cause the many English teachers to go into cardiac arrest next year latter welre gonel when they see this run on sentence which goes on and on and doesn't really come to stop with no motion. Just what do the editors 0n the staff do? Well, there are many facets of editing that the editors reflect. and that's why the editors edit this edition ofthe yearbook with such a stylistic Fury of editorship. However. since this tells you about as much as the average English class twhich we're protesting by writing thisl. we'd like to editorialize a bit more on what we really are Supposed to do when we edit. There are three editorial positions that we have excuses For. First. there's the Copy Editor, whose job is to hassle teachers and COaChes for records and COPy, make sure that all copy is correct and to the point twhich is why he's bound and gagged in the comerl, and to do the Senior Directory. Next comes the layout editor, who is re- sponsible for all the pages going into the publisher. The Layout Editor has to make sure that all pages are correct and well drawn the's looking the other way on this onel. and he also schedules photographic dates. Finally there's the Managing Editor, who takes on the burden of stafffeditor relations, makes schedules, and trains new arrivals in the art of destroying the year- book. That's what we're supposed to do, but we usually just sit around and look at girls. just why do we have a yearbook? Fll give you a little history. When in the course of human events it be- comes necessary to try and remember what your high school years were like and the Yearbook was institut- ed among clubs to take up its just and equal station among the powers of the Earth, a decent respect to the opinions of the readers demands that we state the reasons for which the staff is established. We the staff, in order to form a more perfect yearbook hold these truths to be self-evident; all yearbooks are created by the yearbook staff, and they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable preperties among which are type, clarity, and the pursuit of snapshots. That is why we have a yearbook. CandidsISl CHRISTMAS SEMI-FORMAL The 1985 Christmas Semiformal was an astronomi- cal success. To keep warm on the Frigid night of December 27th, dozens of dappez dudes and lovely ladies enjoyed an cnlivening evening of marvelous music, delightful dance, compelling conversation, Charming Christmas Cheer, and mischievous magic under the mistletoe. It was at- tended by nearly 100 couples comprised of mothers and their sons who had been mercilessly strong-armed into attending despite their longstanding apw pointments for root canal work, What is more amazing is that several radical elements in at- tendance ever insisted on danc- ing with their mothers. home even d d so without any sort of bribery!!D They danced to the popular sound of the Wes Neal Memorial Orchestrated Band Ensemble and their specracular rendition of the Bird Dance, popular music, and slow dance tunes. SWEATER SHOP Fashion is a definite priority among the clientele of Roger Bacon, and this yearhs feature was the sweater. Whether it was a new, sleek, psychedelic-col- ored sweater, a Forenza sweater, or the traditional cardigan, it was worn with pride. The Body Bacon was definitely well cov- ered. In fact, many students would not be caught modeling in the halls without a sweater or two to Sport. Even on those exd cruciatingly hot clays when many of us wanted to be in shorts and tee shirts, some peo- ple would not shed their fash- ion statements; they ended up with sweaty sweaters. When one consid- ers the hundreds of activities that occur at R.B. every year, i: is no wonder people can be found yawning 0r dozing occasionally. We all attempt to get our beauty sleep Some of us need it more than othersm and from what the yearbook staff has observed, many people are getting that sleep right here at good ole R.B. Yes, you heard it here Erst friends, we are harboring a few sleepers. Many students have backed a proposal for a siesta after lunch, however, no one is sympathetic to their cause. The Prom was held at the Hartwell Country Club. The theme song of this year's Prom was Through the Eyes of Love. The junior theme song was Stairway to Heaven. With only a hamiful of starters from the year before and an enthusiastic and talented group of juniors, it was obvious that things would have to fall into place for the season to be very successful. Things were looking up as the scrimmages ended and the opening game proved to be a lopsided victory for the Spartans. But, after splitting the next two games, the injury jinx began to take its toll. Although the team played valiantly throughout the season, the depth and experience needed week after week was not there. Finally, in the last two weeks of the season, the injuries had a Chance to heal and the Spartans played very well, culminating in a come-from-behind upset of a previously play-off bound team. The players never gave up, and piayed Well despite the schedule and the problems befalling the team. The underclassmen gained much valuable exper- ience and many players were given the chance to show what they could do. Despite the record, this was an exciting and successful season for the Roget Bacon football team. Awards Most Valuable Player e Andy Dorr Best Off. Back - Len McIntyre Best Def. The low spots this year were the three losses to Moeller, the last one in the tournament. The high points were the victories over Greenhills and Finneytown in the same year and Bacon's first victory ever against Finneytown. The season gave many juniors and several sopho- mores vakuable experience for the future. The strong performances of the last two reserve teams suggested good future varsity teams. Second Row: Holly Jones, Coach Feichtner, jill McNulty, Theresa Ungruhe lCaptainl. The 1985 edition of Girls' Cross Country began with high hopes. A solid foundation for success had been laid by Roger Baconis first team in '84. Returning letter winners, Theresa Ungtuhe and Jill McNulty provided a strong nucleus for the team and the addition of Freshman standout Kerrie Sica gave the Lady Spartans three solid front runners. Christy Weber and Holly Jones responded to the call for reinforcements and did their best to support their frontrunners. If spirit and desire were enough to win victories, then certainly this team would have been victorious. Unfortunately, competing with minimum numbers made the Roger Bacon crew easy prey for the competition. More often than not the girls could not put all five runners on the same starting line. The final team race at the District best capsulized the entire season. Unable to field a full team and disqualified from team competition, each girl that competed did so proudly and ran a personal best time, ending the season with great personal satisfaction, where little team accomplishment was to be found. But if the Lady Spartans were denied their team victories, one Certainly could not deny the individual accomplishments. Kerrie Sica launched her high school career and Served notice that she would have to be contended with, by any runner who wanted to earn a victory. When Kerrie did not win, she was always in the forefront. Her participation in the Ohio State Cross Country Championships and selection as a First Team All-City runner were rare accomplishments for a Freshman. Theresa Ungruhe also earned her share of personal glory. Throughout the fall competitions Theresa's name always appeared among top ten award win- nersi As Captain, she worked tirelessly and unselfishly on behalf of her teammates. Missing the trip to Columbus and the State Finals by a mere one second was an unfitting end to a fine season. Her all-league and all-city recognition were more appropriate tributes. Holly, jill, and Christy discovered one of the most valuable lessons of all eduCation e there is more than one kind of success. Moreover, the greatest success of all is the success of the spirit that keeps itself undefeated and still aspiring whether life is easy or hard, successful or unsuccessful, happy or unhappy. 83 CROSS COUNTRY The 1985 Boys' Cross Country season was a fine tribute to a select group of young men. Never have so few clone so much for so many, and received so little recognition. Nevertheless, their efforts were certainly noticed by those in the know . At the beginning of the fall season, the Spartan thin-clads were respect- ed but not very highly regarded. However, in a few short weeks, they gained some very high regard the old-fashioned way e they earned it! After a respectable opening competition, the cross countrymen began a steady climb. By mid-season, they were among the elite powers in the city, ranking as high as third in the city poll. Despite some minor setbacks, the Spartans clung tenaciously to their position through their final competition as a team in the regional finalsr What made such a small group in quantitative terms capable of achieving such lofty heights in qualitative terms was in large measure due to the chemistry that developed over the course of the season. The Senior members were outstanding leaders. Captain Kevin Goheen did not disappoint his teammates, who depended heavily on him. He was truly a leader, both physically and spiritually. As Iiil runner Kevin led the team in meet after meet, Culminating in his strong showing in the state competition. Tim Rosmarin's care and concern was the glue that kept the team members close together. Nothing was too much for Tim to sacrifice for the good of the team. Dave Wisnet provided the headiness neces- sary for any quality team. He carefully monitored the progress of the team and was always able to keep his cohorts doing the little things well so that the bigger jobs followed more easily. Certainly the underclassmen made significant contributions. juniors Phil Kastrup and jeff O'Brien provided a talented core, always meat the top of the heap in the races. Sophomores Bill Hoffbauet and Dan Geigle demonstrated tremendous courage as they jumped into the thick of things and proved quite capable of running with the best. Freshman Ev McElroy and Bill Olbetding were standouts for the little Spartans but RB. has not heard the last from people like Allenswotth, Lohr, Carroll, and Schurdak. For the record, the Rio Grande championship will probably be the fondest memory, but the Elder victory and fine showing at Covington Catholic will also be long remembered. Kevin Goheen's selection as a First Team All-City runner and Phil Kastrup's Honorable Mention status were well-deserved honors, but the best reward that all the Spartan harriets received was one that is intangible and is best summarized in this old lyric: When the odds are saying you'll never win, that's when a grin should start . . . because you have heart . . . miles and miles of heart. THE FACULTY-SENATE VOLLEYBALL GAME This year's annual faculty-senate volleyball game was much like all of the previous games: the senate got slaughtered. We could tell that they were whimps when we entered the gym, boasted one teacher who enjoyed the annual defeat of the senate. The faculty team was coached by Coach Knoffer who had minimal tasks due to the great skill of his players. The star of the game was Roger Baconls infamous julie What at Spike! Hill. Many of the senate members were carried off of the floor after she dealt them a spike. Of course, there were those dedicated faculty players who sacrificed for the good of the team. Mr. Swedenberg and Mt. Rademache: collided while diving for a low one, and both suffered severe injury. Mr. Swedenberg said that his big toe will never be the same. Yes, we will cover up the story and state that the game was a close one, but the senate is trying to erase all recordings of the game, so we have no official report on the game. The varsity cheerleaders par- ticipated in Miami University's cheerleading camp winning excellent or superior awards in all events, the most spirited squad award, and the overall superior trophy in the final competition. Along with cheering at football and basketball games, the cheerleaders attended other athletic events as their schedule would allow. They made spirit banners for the football and basketball teams, par- ticipated in pep rallies, and decorated the locker room for the Homecom- ing football game, making a banner for each member of the team and filling the locker room with snacks. The cheerleading season ended in February. The cheerleaders had a fine year and did a terrific job. 118lCheerleaders .. . . 5: .. T VARSITY: Tina St. Clair, Heather Arszman, Angie Johnson Ann Carrol. Although not a rebuilding year, the inexperience of the band coupled with the difficult show that they attempted did not immEdiater yield the desired results. The band continued to grow as a group and, at the Lakota Competition, Fmally discovered their capabilities. They then proceeded to take the trephies for: Best auxiliary units, 2nd Flagh'ne, Best percussion, Marching percussion, Best general effect, 15: place in the AAA Class and overall Grand Champion. After finishing the marching season the band set their sights on improving their music abilities. The band sent over 80 of its better musicians to the solo and ensemble competition who competed and came home quite victorious. These competitors who had a good representation from the freshmen and sophomore classes took away over ninety-seven medals for excellence. The band hopes to continue the tradition Of great Roger Bacon Bands with the roots in a young and experienced crop of underclassmen. To the indefatigable woman who has guided, inspired, and properly motivated her students, Mrs. Pat McKinney, we dedicate the 1986 TROUBADOUR. During the past 22 years, her entire professional career, Mrs. McKinney has enthusiastically served the students of Roger Bacon and Our Lady of Angels High Schools. A social studies teacher during the school day, she has spent countless hours outside class time in the additional roles of senior class moderator, graduation coordinator, dance moderator, and even golf coach. Firm but fair, Mrs. McKinney has displayed a sensitivity to the needs of all people around her regardless of their ages. She has earned the respeCt of students and staff alike for her skills and dedication. Once Mrs. McKinney has taken on a task, she has given it her all to ensure its Success. Although a busy teaching schedule and related activities have absorbed most of her day, she has unselfishly devoted time to the needs and happiness of others. She and her husband, Gerry, have been foster patents to a troubled boy from a local orphanage and have welcomed into their home a student from South Africa. Mrs. McKinney has served her community well as a member and offiCer of the Greenhills Women's Club. We are grateful for the guidance, insPiration, and motivation she has given her students. She has aided them in making decisions so they are now better prepared to take on the added reaponsibilities that come with adulthood. We wish her many more years to stand before the students of Roger Bacon as a shining example of Christian womanhood. - Sister Anita Brelage, O.S.F. 254jDediCation DedicatioanSS James F. Dear innocent objeCtOts who may be perusing this yearbook, As you casually page through this year's TROUBADOUR y might have noticed something slightly more - slightly mt attiStic, more poetic and even Chaotic and confused; somethi which was not as evident in previous editions. We, James Fisw james Geets, and Paul james Bums were that something. Alt with the inspired 01nd often tongue-tiedy Mt. Hilterbran and vanguard staff we created a unique psychological and liter experience that can only be described as . . . as , . . bizarre! Putting the shovels aside, what we would like to say is that we ti to make this yearbook as interesting and fun as possible for '0 staff and readers. The apparent chaos might have something to with the different styles of out moderators. Mt. Lamb twho tau most of usy had a style that was uniform and cohesive, so w Mr. Hilterbran expressed a desire to try a little more flowing artistic approach, we let our imaginations fly, and they flew II off the handle and out of the ballpark. Nevertheless, we tetai some of Mr. Lamb's conformity and style, so the resulting y! book was a positive blend of both. We sincerely hope that you enjoyed this eccentric and eclt Style, and it was our intention that no one would be offendei our good-natuted satire and humor tor even the covety. Live long and pro: James, James and Jar
