CROSS COUNTRY It has been said that the true measure of a man is what he does with what he has. If you can measure a team by that same standard, the 1983 Cross Country team earns a high rating indeed. At the start of the season there were only ten members on the Cross Country team. There were no returning stars, and Roger Bacon was not ranked in the coaches' pre-season poll. But Coach Feichtner did have a faithful corps of hard workers who, led by Vince Becks and Eric Forte, logged over 500 miles during the hot summer months. That hard work paid handsome dividends as the fall season progressed. Time after time the RB. runners were counted as being down, and time after time they proved to be competitive with the best teams in the city. Trophies are seldom given for such intangibles as leadership, character, sense of humor, unselfishness, and self-discipline. These qualities are rewarded only by a deep sense of selE-satisfaction. Seniors Vince Becks, Eric Porte, Greg Edwards, Greg Hellmann, and Tom Steinmetz - though not abounding in natural athletic talent, nevertheless did provide a fine example to their younger teammates. The positive attitude and character of these young men spilled onto the underclassmen . and paved the way for their success. In many ways, the G.C.L. Championship won by the frosh and the numerous other victories won by the freshmen can be shared by their older teammates. The Harrier Highlights include the championship of the Roger Bacon - Greenhills Invitational, the runner-up honors of the Ross Invitational, and the team qualification to the District Finals. Freshmen achievements include lst or 2nd place honors in six different invitationals, capped by the G.C.L. Champion- ship. Congratulations to a team of athletes who made the most of what they had. Once again they have proven that Roger Bacon distance runners are winners in the long run.
