FOOTBALL SPARTANS MARCH T0 VICTORY! 2nd IN G.C'.L. 3rd IN THE CITY The 1983 football season was one of excitement and satisfac- tion. Following a couple of down seasons, the Spartans re- bounded with an 8-2 record and second place in the G.C.L. The eight wins gave the Spartans their best football record in fif- teen yearsl The season opened with a bang. The Spartans recorded three straight shut-outs, outscoring opponents 87-0. This string was finally ended by Princeton, the eventual State Champions. The biggest game of the year had to be the Elder game. With chances of a big season riding on this win, the Spartans were looking toward a strong finish in the league. Things looked bad, however, since the Spartans trailed 13-9 with three min- utes to go in the game. The strong attitude and fighting spirit of this year's team then took over. Bacon fought back to win the game in the Final minutes on a long touchd0wn pass from John Stofa to Joe Hice. The 1983 Spartans were led by coecaptains Rob Burkhart, Joe Hice, and Tim Recker. Besides the spirit and never-quit attitude, this team showed a closeness and comradery which made them truly something special in Roger Bacon athletic history. This esprit-de-corps helped the teams through some hard times and tough situtations. Congratulations on a fine season, Spartans. Your efforts and dedication have paid off. Slofa's pass spoils Elder's Homecoming!
