F OOTBALL The 1981 Varsity Football season was not as successd ful as we all had hoped. Injuries and inexperience took their toll against some very strong competition. The season opened in a flourish With consecutive wins over Publich High League opponents Woodward and Withrow. Next came a close loss to perennial state AA power Hamilton Badin at Hamilton. Then, despite a rather uninspired performance, the Spartans upped their record to 3-1 against a very fine Purcell team. It was at this point in the season that a plague of injuries began to have its effect. Consecutive losses fol- lowed to Elder, Princeton, LaSalle, Moeller, and St. Xa- vier. Four of these teams were in contention for the playoffs at the season's end, and two of them made it! However, despite problems, the Spartans played with a lot of dedication and spirit. The players showed true Spartan Spirit and never gave in to the opposition. The season finale came at home against Walnut Hills; the Spartans had an easy time of it, running the final record to 4 wins and 6 losses. Despite the record, several outstanding accomplish- ments were produced: Jeff Allisonts two consecutlve record-tying defensive games; Steve Gruenschlaeger's 47-yard field goal against St. Xavier; and Mike Morri- seyts 45 pass receptions. Many other individuals made some great contributions to the team, and many others gave up a lot for the good of the rest.
