16 CROSS C OCIN TR Y 1981 was not the first year for Cross Country at Roger Bacon, but it certainly was a year of firsts for Roger Bacon Cross Country. For the first time, Roger Bacon was touted as a serious threat to the dominant powers in local run- ning circles. The Spartans lived up to that reputation and held on to the first position in the poll most of the season. Spartan runners became accustomed to first place. Five times during the season, they came home with championship honors. However, the victories at Cov- ington Catholic, Ross, Elder, and Rio Grande all paled in the wake of Roger Bacon's first-ever G. C. L. Championship. Another first was Roger Bacon's second consecun tive trip to the State Finals. Strong leadership by Seniors Bill Budke, Doug Olberding, Mike Niesen, and Sam Morris made the second trip more productive. The Spartans surprised everyone but themselves as they captured 3rd place honors in the State, far better than any other Cincinnati team. That third place fin- ish was their worst finish of the season, but the best- ever by 3 Roger Bacon Cross Country Team. Individually, Roger Bacon had its share of firsts. Bill Budke, was the first Spartan to receive the presti- gious Runner-of-the-Year Award. Bill's credentials in winning the award were impressive. He won cham- pionships in competitions at Roger Bacon-Greenhills, Ross, G. C. L., Lakota, Sectional, and was the top AAA runner from Cincinnati in the State Meet. Class- mate Doug Olberding was generally right with Budke to supply a knock-out 1-2 punch for the Spartans. Doug even bested Bill at the District Competition. Six Spartans were selected to represent the G. C. L. in the All-Star Meet. Bill Budke and Doug Olberding ran in the varsity division, while juniors Darrin Roll and Mike Olberding and sophomores Vince Becks and Mike Sexton competed in J . V. divisions. Three members of the Bacon Bunch received All- City honors. Bill Budke and Doug Olberding were selected to the first team, while Darrin Roll received honorable mention. Moreover, ttAll-Ohio recognition was given to Budke and Olberding. Coach Dave Feichtneris 1981 Spartan Cross Coun- trymen enter the record books as Bacon's Best. They will prove to be a difficult challenge for future Spar- tan runners. Rest assured, however, that those run- ners-to-come will be inspired by the performance of the 1981 team, as they also prepare to GO FOR IT!
