Jr O O DEDICATION Wes Neal: Class Personified From Michigan to Florida, from Virginia to Illinois, when a young man announces that he goes to or graduated from Roger Bacon High School, people recognize the name immediately. A large part of that recognition has been earned by the performances of our own Roger Bacon Spartan Band. The band has entertained thousands - perhaps millions of people all over the eastern and mid-westem United States. Audiences and competing bands have come to know that When the Roger Bacon Band performs, the music will be great and the marching will be exciting. That tradition of excellence was started over twenty years ago when band moderator Fr. Celsus Griese and Rog- er Bacon principal Fr. Andrew Fox brought a young College Conservatory graduate into the schooi to be- come band director. Fr, Ceisus and Wes Neal togeth- er began to transform an average high school band into a disciplined, precise performing team known and respected far and wide. Since his arrival at Roger Bacon in 1960, Mr. Neal has directed the band to eight Ohio State Champion- ships and performances everywhere from St. Peters- burg, Florida, to the Super Bowl in Pontiac, Michigan. The band has performed alongside such musical gi- ants as Doc Severenson and Al Hirt. Success has been taken for granted as the band has collected trophies and honors year after year. But just what is it about Wes Neal that has enabled him to form the Roger Bacon Band into one of the most distinguished march- ing bands in the country? First of all, Mr. Neal is a quiet leader who allows his band officers and section leaders to take an active role in running the band. Mr. Neal creates and teach- es, then steps back and allows the student leaders to carry out the instructions. Band members themselves make most of the major decisions involving trips, per- formances, and practices. The student leaders run practices and direct performances, even in his ab- sence. With his years of experience, Mr. Neal guides and critiques but lets band members know that suc- ' cess depends ultimately on their efforts, not his own. He lets the standing ovations teach band members how gratifying the fruits of their labors can be. The band learns not only to strive for high goals, but also what it feels like to achieve those goals. To Mr. Neal, band members are not boys but young - men WhO grow to become mature-and responsibleL adults. Band training, therefore, is not an end in itself but becomes a basis in helping the young men deal with life and all its challenges. His fine leadership and strict discipline have set examples for thousand of young men over the last two decades. In the midst of it all, band members know that he is always caring about their Welfare and progress. Mr. Neal and the Roger Bacon Spartan Band have received many honors and tributes, but the Trouba- dour would like to add one more honor for the man who has built the tradition. Because of his superb dedication to excellence and precision, to the ideals of Roger Bacon High School, and to the thousands of young men he has guided, the yearbook staff is proud 1;? dedicate the 1982 Troubadour to Mr. Wesley A. eel. St. Francis Of Assisi 1 1 82- 1 982 EIGHTH CENTENARY In 1182 hundreds of boys were born in Assisi, Italy. One of them, Francis, is still influencing the Christian and non-Christian world 800 years after his birth. Many Christians consider Francis to be an extremely dedi- cated follower of Jesus; Francis encourages them to follow Christ more generously. Non-Christians often view Francis as one of Christianity's best representa- tives. Roger Bacon is a Franciscan school, not simply be- cause it is named for a 13th century Franciscan scientist and theologian, not simply because there are pictures of Francis in the lobby and chapel, nor because its diplo- mas and stationery bear the Franciscan coat of arms, nor because 14 of its faculty members wear the Francis- can habit. Roger Bacon is a Franciscan school because its graduates, parents, faculty, friends, and students be- lieve that Francis of Assisiis approach to life still makes sense today. Francis used to say, What you are before God, that you are and no more. We can rightly add, and no less. If we are truthful about ourselves before God, we are likely to be more honest about ourselves and others. Living in this threefold truth about God, himself, and othersi made Francis in- credibly free in a time when many people felt that freedom came from gaining more wealth, power, or status than ones neighbors. Popes and beggars, rich merchants and children all felt at ease in Fran- ! h Icisis presenca because he was so close to God that t he saw all creation as coming from God. When Francis was 24 years old and was trying to decide on a direction for his life, he met a man suffering from leprosy. Instead of rearing his horse, tossing the man a couple of coins, and galloping away in disgust - as he had probably done several times before- Francis instead dismounted, gave the man some money, and kissed his hand. That day Francis won a tremendous victory over him- self. In Francisis day, society shunned the unfortu- nate victims of leprosy; Francis, however, chale lenged that attitude and prompted a few more peo- ple to reSpect these victims as sons and daughters of God. Francis continued to care for these people, and so did the young men who came to follow him. Shortly before his death, Francis recalled that day on the road outside Assisi and told his followers that the sight of those suffering from leprosy once nauseated me beyond measure; but then God him- self led me into their company, and I had compas- sion for them. When I had once become acquainted with them, what had previously nauseated me be- came a source of spiritual and physical consolation for me tTestament of St. Francisi. Roger Bacon High School tries to reflect the charity of Francis. In the 1981 school year, the Spartans donated canned goods, marched for life, raised money through faculty-senate volleyball and basketball games, gave blood, bowled for breath, and volunteered their time in various Sen- ate and National Honor Society service projects. This past year the alumni donated over $115,000 to help keep Bacon's tuition affordable to all. The incident on the road outside Assisi constitut- ed a victory over his selfecenteredness; it prepared him for a life of generous service of God and the human family. Today there is probably no one suf- fering from leprosy in Cincinnati. There are, how- ever, many men and women Who are not treated with the respect they deserve as sons and daugh- ters of God. A Roger Bacon education should cer- tainly challenge the attitude that some people don't deserve a Spartants respect. Hm Dre wings b y Sr. Kay Francis Berger, O.S.F. There is a prayer which is commonly attributed to St. Francis but which was probably written very early in this century. It certainly reflects the vision of Francis and captures what Roger Bacon High School tries to do: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; where there is hatred let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon,- where the: is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. 0 Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love,- for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. CHAMPION CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS: BiH Shockley, Mike Sexton, Budke, Mike Olberding, Vince Becks. Doug Olberding, Sam Morris, Rick Sim. Mike Niesen, Darrin Roll, Bill 16 CROSS C OCIN TR Y 1981 was not the first year for Cross Country at Roger Bacon, but it certainly was a year of firsts for Roger Bacon Cross Country. For the first time, Roger Bacon was touted as a serious threat to the dominant powers in local run- ning circles. The Spartans lived up to that reputation and held on to the first position in the poll most of the season. Spartan runners became accustomed to first place. Five times during the season, they came home with championship honors. However, the victories at Cov- ington Catholic, Ross, Elder, and Rio Grande all paled in the wake of Roger Bacon's first-ever G. C. L. Championship. Another first was Roger Bacon's second consecun tive trip to the State Finals. Strong leadership by Seniors Bill Budke, Doug Olberding, Mike Niesen, and Sam Morris made the second trip more productive. The Spartans surprised everyone but themselves as they captured 3rd place honors in the State, far better than any other Cincinnati team. That third place fin- ish was their worst finish of the season, but the best- ever by 3 Roger Bacon Cross Country Team. Individually, Roger Bacon had its share of firsts. Bill Budke, was the first Spartan to receive the presti- gious Runner-of-the-Year Award. Bill's credentials in winning the award were impressive. He won cham- pionships in competitions at Roger Bacon-Greenhills, Ross, G. C. L., Lakota, Sectional, and was the top AAA runner from Cincinnati in the State Meet. Class- mate Doug Olberding was generally right with Budke to supply a knock-out 1-2 punch for the Spartans. Doug even bested Bill at the District Competition. Six Spartans were selected to represent the G. C. L. in the All-Star Meet. Bill Budke and Doug Olberding ran in the varsity division, while juniors Darrin Roll and Mike Olberding and sophomores Vince Becks and Mike Sexton competed in J . V. divisions. Three members of the Bacon Bunch received All- City honors. Bill Budke and Doug Olberding were selected to the first team, while Darrin Roll received honorable mention. Moreover, ttAll-Ohio recognition was given to Budke and Olberding. Coach Dave Feichtneris 1981 Spartan Cross Coun- trymen enter the record books as Bacon's Best. They will prove to be a difficult challenge for future Spar- tan runners. Rest assured, however, that those run- ners-to-come will be inspired by the performance of the 1981 team, as they also prepare to GO FOR IT! Injuries and inexperience took their toll against some very strong competition. The season opened in a flourish With consecutive wins over Publich High League opponents Woodward and Withrow. Next came a close loss to perennial state AA power Hamilton Badin at Hamilton. Then, despite a rather uninspired performance, the Spartans upped their record to 3-1 against a very fine Purcell team. It was at this point in the season that a plague of injuries began to have its effect. Consecutive losses fol- lowed to Elder, Princeton, LaSalle, Moeller, and St. Xa- vier. Four of these teams were in contention for the playoffs at the season's end, and two of them made it! However, despite problems, the Spartans played with a lot of dedication and spirit. The players showed true Spartan Spirit and never gave in to the opposition. The season finale came at home against Walnut Hills; the Spartans had an easy time of it, running the final record to 4 wins and 6 losses. Despite the record, several outstanding accomplish- ments were produced: Jeff Allisonts two consecutlve record-tying defensive games; Steve Gruenschlaeger's 47-yard field goal against St. Xavier; and Mike Morri- seyts 45 pass receptions. Many other individuals made some great contributions to the team, and many others gave up a lot for the good of the rest. .9. w 1; 3m 2' 3kg. .- '1 73 ,. 4. ,9 . 1: . .. 1,! EIGHT STRAIGHT The Varsity Basketball Team has just concluded the most successful season in the school's 54 years. It has won THE most coveted crown in Ohio Bas- ketball - the AAA State Championship. The teamts 24 wins are the most number of victories in its history. At the beginning of practice in Novem- ber, Who could have dreamed this impossible dream? It has been said before that Champions are made, not born. This State Championship was won because of ttthose little things that were per- formed day-in and day-out. This team had an in- credible amount of- team pride and desire to Win. Many people have commented on tthow fundamen- tally sound this Spartan team was. Again, it is those little things which make a champion or produce a loser. THE TOURNAMEN T The Cincinnati Sectional Tournament began With the Spartans as the 1t2 seeded team. Bruce Knolle erupted from an end of the season scoring slump to lead Bacon with 23 points against Milford. Bacon used its city-leading defense to cause nu- merous Milford turnovers and poor shots, beating the Eagles 71-58. The next opponent, Turpin, promised to be very powerful and underrated. The team employed a tenacious 2-3 zone defense and excellent, unselfish team play to demolish the Spartans of Turpin 64- 38. Knolle repeated his scoring binge with another 23 points. Greg Schildmeyer chipped in 18 points, while Mike Morrissey passed for a seasonts high of 14 assists. In the Sectional title game, Roger Bacon led all the way to down a good Woodward team 56-48 at Miami Universityts Millet Hall. Knolle scored yet another 23 points to pace the offense, while Morris- sey tossed in 15 points. The dominating factor in the game was the superior board play by the Spar- tans. ttSpar-tans make Sweetl61wThese were the head- lines of Spartan Sports after Roger Bacon defeated Lebanon 58-45 to capture 3 Southwestern Ohio AAA District Championship at the University of Dayton: Arena. In What had become a tournament trademark, Bacon featured a rugged defense plus a patient offensive attack to eliminate the Warriors. Knolle led a balanced attack with 16 points, fol- lowed by Schildmeyerts 14 points. Top rebounder was Rob Niehoff with 10 rebounds. In the opening round of the Regional Tourna- ment, Bacon faced perhaps the best team, Mt. Healthy. Rising to the challenge, the Spartans played their finest game of the season to defeat the Owls 69-67. Senior Co-Captains Schildmeyer and Knolle, along with Rick Bierman, led the way with 21, 18. and 17 points respectively. The victory be- longed as much to our 6th man in the stands as to the team itself. A fantastic effort by all! Facing a very familiar opponent in the Regional finals, the Spartans played a rejuvenated Mueller Crusader team, led by sophomore sensation Byron Larkin. Trying to defeat the Big Moe an unprec- edented four times in one season, the Spartans scrapped and fought to eke out a 54-53 victory and go UPSTATE for the first time since 1939. Bruce Knolle was there in the nick of time, to put the team ahead With 10 seconds remaining. Heroes abounded, but it was the determined, unselfish play by all which spelled victory. St. John's Arena on the campus of Ohio State University was the scene of Bacon's next game; Lima Senior was the opponent With approximate- .; ON THE ROAD TO STATE! 1y 14,000 fans on hand, RB led most of the way only to withstand a furious Lima Senior comeback. Ba- con held on to beat Lima 49-47. This game featured another Knolle field goal at the buzzer to send the Roger Bacon Spartans into the AAA finals against the Barberton Magics. For the first time in the schoolts 54 glorious years, Roger Bacon captured the Ohio High School Athletic Associationts AAA State Basketball Championship by defeating Barberton 71-67 in overtime. The game featured two evenly matched teams. Although Bacon led for most of the game, the Magics did not quit. Down by 13 early in the 4th quarter, the Magics fought back to tie the game by the end of regulation play. Utilizing the free throw line t8 out of 11 attemptst, the Spartans regained the lead to win the game and the state title. Greg Schildmeyer scored 22 points and grabbed 8 re- bounds to be named the Tournaments Most Valu- able Player. Also named to the State All-Tournaa ment Team was Bruce Knolle. Throughout the Tournament, the Spartans epito- mized the unselfish concept of team basketball. With no spectacular players to count on, Bacon proved that motivated, determined group of young men can accomplish that Impossible Dream. But there might not have been a state championship if it were not for the support of the Roger Bacon fans. From the send off assembly Friday morning before the Lima game, to the Victory reception Saturday night, the cheering and enthusiasm provided the spark that ignited the Bacon squad. The G.C.L. record of 8-2 was good for second place. The ballhandlers tguardst of this group were Scott Morrissey. Dave Kiley, Kevin Yarbrough, Tim Schmidt, and Bill Haussler. These men did a finejob of bringing the ball upecourt and playing a sticky man-Lo-man defense on our oppositions' first lines of attack. Their quickness on de- fense was responsible for 140 steals which seemed to propel our team toward victory. Scott Morrissey was the team M.V.P. on defense. while Dave Kiley was team MVP on offense. These two players provided the leadership needed for a successful team and were selected Co-Captains. The forwards and centers tThe Big MenD 0n the squad were Rick Stegeman, Steve Fumi-Fiamawle, Matt Burchfield, Mike Benedetti, Har- old Trotter. Bill Myers, Terry Schaeper, Mike Jones, and Ev Bracken. These men did a fine job of providing the muscle and defense needed inside to stop our opponents and to get the ball off the boards to start the fast break. Top rebounders were Matt Burchfield, Steve Fumi, and Mike Benedetti. Matt Burchfield was also the recipient of the Pride. Hustle. and Desire Award. Matt was the over-all hardest worker on the team. As a team. the Frosh Spartans averaged 39.4 points per game on of- fense. while limiting opponents to just 32.4 points per game. Who will ever be able to forget the big tourna- ment Victories at Indian Hill and Finneytown? Not many will soon forget the 1982 G.C.L. Meet in which the Spartans had four champions: Phil Hogan, Doug Freson, Alan Napier, and Steve Gruenschlaegar. Along with these will be memo- ries of the pin-wins by Ron Bellman and Pete Folzenlogen, and memories of Rob Reckerls her- oics in the Purcell Dual Match. The entire team will remember the Dual Match victories! Big wins were scored over Prin- ceton, Northwest, Moeller, and arch-rival Pur- cell. However. the best memories will be those of the friendships, the sacrifices, the practices, and the togetherness that grows in a successful wrestling season. The Roger Bacon Band had been asked in November of 1981 if they would participate in the Super Bowl fes- tivities in Pontiac, Michigan. The Super Bowl Committee of Pontiac and the Pontiac Chamber of Commerce arranged for three tour buses to transport the band to St. Mary's College, where they spent the night. Meals tincluding breakfasn consisted of hot dogs, potato chips, and milk. The first event on Saturday, J anuary 23, was the $11- per Bowl Parade through the streets of Pontiac. The band was awakened at 5:00 AM. after only four hours sleep. At 7:00 AM. the band left for the parade, Which began at 9:00 AM. and lasted until 11:00. Soon afterwards the band played the Star Spangled Banner to begin the Snowmobile Races sponsored by the Pontiac Chamber of Commerce and Budweiser. Finally, the band was given the afternoon to tour the streets of Ponti- ac, especially Bourbon Street North. That even- ing the band returned to St. Mary's College to prepare for the Super Bowl Pep Rally. In 100 below zero weather, with a wind chill factor of 400 below, the band performed alongside the bonwfire before hundreds of shivering but cheer- ing fans. At 11:30 P.M. the band boarded buses for the return trip to Cincinnati, ending a super performance by a super band. 9 5;. .iw-u - 2;, . gm I Foomu 'HALL OF MM? 154 '7; I t, , 0 GRAND MARSHAL ; . mm dtWELERS' HF h- ' xiiirgmhuONBS EYE wn'n'r A11: 'u 14 EXAmizn MEN , hi3 IIH'r'lV! mEMORIES An exciting trip on comfortable travel coaches . . .
