TRIUMPHANT is the best word to use in describing the 1980 Spartan Football Team. The Men of Brown and Gold truly exempli- fied a never-say-die attitude as they rallied from a 14-point deficit to upset a highly ranked Elder. and held state chapion Moeller to just 3 points right up to the final minutes of the game. Because the Spartans gave all-out efforts when they were needed most, they shattered a pre-season poll that had placed them last in the G.C.L. Almost in revenge, the team turned the tables to land an undisputed second place in the Greater Cincinnati League and fourth place in the final city poll. Senior leadership and depth of personnel were hallmarks of the 1980 team. The seniors showed a proud determination not only to improve themselves individually but also to improve the team as a whole. Depth was provided by juniors who were ready to play Spartan Football when called upon to do so. The over-all quality of the team became even more evident when the G.C.L. All Star Team contained six Spartans on the first team and five on the second team. Especially impressive was the naming of Defensive End Ed Anton to State. District, and League All Star Teams.
