Through days, months, and years change reaches, sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically, into the lives ofeach of us. At Roger Bacon each student undergoes important changes throughout the course of his transformation from frosh to senior. The entire Bacon environment A with all its academic, religious, and athletic aspects is the life and future of each student. The courses and activities offered enable the student to develop his abilities. He also benefits from studying and working with other stu- dents and teachers. The constant change at Bacon can be seen in the changes in the building itself. The school has recently undergone repainting in many places, replacmcnt of corridor ceilings. and carpeting of several rooms. The variety of activity at Ba- con is shown by the changing functions of the building. At various times it serves as a scene of dances, basketball games, PTA meetings, awards banquets, and also of learning. A student meets change daily. For some. certain changes came. too slowly, others spend their time trying to keep pace with a whirling environment. 'But the pro-: oess :of change at Bacon continues, encompassing c'v'cry aspect of school life. alumnus-IuilnltiilllllilIllllUlllllln - .3.'...'.'.. 'Irv:rvsa.. The speakers discuss contemporary, social, and political topics with the interested students. They includ- ed a conscientious objector, Federal agents, the mayor of Evendala, and Tom McGreevy. The 1970-71 year witnessed a revival of spirit in the student body. In every aspect of school life, students showed a special enthusiasm and pride. Support of athletic teams, a traditional mea- sure of school spirit, was at a high pitch. Each week dedicated Signess brightened the cafeteria, and Tuesday-morning spirits. with inspiration- art slogans for coming gamest Pep assemblies revealed the enthusiasm of those who planned them, and of the entire student body. The new cheerleading squad, with its female members. made cheering at games something in which Spartans could once again take pride. Team members constantly showed their own spirit in hard work, dedicated practice, and off- season conditioning. The Spartan pride em- bodied in the coaching staffswas obviously in- stilled in each of the team members. Strong spirit was evident among Bacon's many other organizations. The many accom- plishments of these groups, such as the bandts fabulous achievements and the Troubadour's ttbigger and better yearbook' revealed the de- termined effort ofindividual students. Students at R.B. often revealed their com- munity spirit. Examples, occurring throughout the year, included the Senateis toy drive and Christmas show, the help of two men of Bacon to a lady unable to start her car, and even the planting of a Bengal pennant atop the downtown Fountain. The farce was a story about nine high school students who were having their fmal rehearsal before the big show. Along with the troubles and goof-ups of the rehearsal, there is the tendency of hatred lo Horace Uohn Busamt because of his constantly correcting Spike the Butler tTim Brothertom in a cruel way. Variety Show 3 A Smash -w- Features Top Musical And Comical Talents 67 The best-ever Spartan track squad blended a handful of superwseniors with a large group ofjuniors and sophomores to produce Baconls first Track title since 1966. What is most remarkable is that they did it without taking a single first place a but scor- ing in 13 out of 15 events. The hurdles and relays were strong points e and the sprints the only weak areas. Senior tri-captains Jay Ritchie, Lee Buse, and Dennis Fossaluzza led the team throughout the season, along with Most Valuable Winner Mike Sullivan, who almost didn't come out for the team. One school record was set when Ritchie turned the mile in 4:269 in the GCL meet. As with the Cross Country team, next year looks even more promising with the return of 15 lettermen. Bostick, Schoettmer, Mulcare, Sullivan, Moore, Hilling, Crom, Eckes, Smith, and Noonan will be just a few of the high scorers on next year7s team. R.B. Track N0. 1 e GCL ' 12? ; m. '55? ka Km ! Aside from the curtainhs opening on Saturday night being late, the produc- tion of Tom Jones by the Roger Bacon Drama Guild was a hit. The cast did an excellent job. Many members of the cast unabashedly ac- claim it as the best comedy ever pro- duced by the Roger Bacon Drarria Guild. 82 .4 Tally Ho! j i ? j I r. I W I 85 : Dedication and pride and hustle are the marks of a true Cham- pion. Each of these marks is a characteristic of Fr. Alan and his twentysfive years as a priest, as a teacher, and as the Ath- letic Director of Roger Bacon High School. Fr. Alan came to Roger Bacon in 1946, immediately after his ordination to the priesthood. He has taught Religion for twen- ty-five years. During these years he has guided many young men in his own inimitable style. Many grads still return to Bacon to seek his guidance. During these twenty-five years, the teaching of Religion has undergone some changes. Yet, he has continued to study and read. His continued study permits him to give his students an up-to-date version of the Old Testament. In 1949, Fr. Alan became Roger Baconls fourth Athletic Director, 3 position he has held for twenty-two years. In this position he has become very proficient in diagnosing bone breaks and injuries of all types. His services to students to their aches and pains, are almost incredible. His care of equip- ment, his repair of equipment, has kept it in the best possible condition. We must also add that the grass on the football field is always the best in the city because of Pr. Alanis constant 10v- ing care. He is the best groundskeeper around. For the past twenty-two years, the athletic program at Bacon has been tops because of Fr. Alanls hard and ever-continuing work. FR. ALAN HEET! The man with the gruff exterior; the man with a heart of gold! The man with a seldom smile; the man with deep feelings and compassion! The man of worry; the man of dedication, hustle, and pride! These are your traits. These are your gifts. We thank you for your dedication to your fellow man. We thank you for your pride in yourself and your work. We thank you for your hustle for everybody and everything. Fr.
