That is why he practices what he has been taught in the classroom. Every Bacon student has come to know that the essence of Catholic practice is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Therefore, he attends Holy Mass reverently. Left: Father Conan distributing Holy Communion, the sacrificial banquet of Holy Muss. Above: Father Edmund and the two Acolytes return the Blessed Sacrament to St. Clement Church after Holy Mass is ended. On every First Friday of each month the audi- torium becomes 0 Chapel. Students are summoned to the Chapel to participate in Holy Mass and Communion in honor of the Sacred Heart of Iesus. Left: On the day before First Friday students listen to a sermon delivered by one of the priest-members of the Faculty or some visiting priest. 67 Top right: Students receiving Holy Com- munion. Center: Freshmen attending Holy Mass in the balcony make the Sign of the Cross at the Last Blessing. Left: During Holy Mass students partici- pate by praying and singing sacred hymns from the Vade Mecum. m-.-I.xum , -.-: nnual Qetreat The Annual Retreat was conducted this year by a former Roger Bacon professor, Father Seraph Seitz. The Retreat opened on Wednesday morning with the theme that the Retreat is c: time to think-not to talk. Father Seraph consistently made it clear that Catholic doctrine and moral- ity cannot compromise with the ways of the world. Our beliefs and way of life must be based on the truths of our Saviour, and not on the fancies of blind educators, lying economists, and the immoral practices of certain business men of this world. At the beginning of each day the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered at which the student body attended and received Holy Communion. After breakfast the students returned to their classrooms for discussions, spiritual reading, and public recitation of the rosary. Each Betreat-dcry was concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. ganuary 17- 19 Above: Father Seraph distributing Holy Communion during the Retreat Mass and, left, imparting Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the close of each day's Exercises. Above left: The Retreat was brought to or close with the Papal Blessing. Right: Between lectures Father Seraph had many a visitor from among the stu- dents, who sought counsel and help from this Franciscan Father. We are certainly sincerely grateful to Father Seraph for these three spiritual days of Retreat and wish him continued success in his priestly life. gpening 335w Cnflaoo t'5te2Wf-M. it'd? September 6 marked the opening of the school year with a Solemn High Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit celebrated in St. Clement Church. Celebrcmt of the Solemn Mass was Very Rev. ' goatbau CDewiew The football team had a wonderful season despite the fact that the records show six wins against three defeats. Those three games, it should be remembered, were lost by a total of six points. Had Bacon won its final game from Purcell, the Spartans would have captured the league title, but such was not the case. Purcell took the cham- , 15w . tegaaaisaawh 5 9 pionship away from Bacon by the margin of a point after touchdown. Holmes drew first blood by scoring on c: thirty yard pass but missing the conver- sion. Bacon's first touchdown came on a sustained drive from their own fifteen with Cowgell crashing over from the two. Late in the fourth quarter, after a bad pass from center on fourth down. the Spartans took over on the Holmes' twelve. From there they marched to the one where Nichting went over. Both conversions were missed. At right: Nichting scores while Holmes' man piles on. BACON ............ 2 MALE .............................. 6 For its second game Bacon travelled to Louisville where it found a much tougher foe than Holmes. It was a rather evenly fought match until Male sent in a little fellow by the name of Seabrook, who ran the Spartans dizzy. In the second period Vonderbrink kicked out on the Mode five. Seabrook was then tackled in the end zone for Bacon's only scorFtwo points. With one minute left in the game Secrbrook carried over from the one. The extra point was wide. Right: NiChting being pulled down after a short gain around right end. BACON ............ 40 WALNUT HILLS ............ 0 The Eagles were no match for the Spartans us Bacon practically scored at will until the coach threw in everything but the bench. With less than a minute after the game got under way. Nichting went forty- seven yards to the three where Cowgell scored 0n the next play. Nichting had runs of forty-seven, thirty- seven. thirty-four, and sixty-four yards. Both Mercurio and Cowgell scored twice with Nichting and Weber tallying once. Right: Weber going straight ahead with two block- ers going in different directions. goodwill Cpeuiew BACON....26 HUGHES .............................. U Hughes scheduled the tour GCL teams in a row and that was just too much, as the Spartans found them an easy touch. The closest the Big Reds were able to get to the Bacon goal line was the eighteen. Again it was Ray Nichting night as the stoclq,r halfback scored three touchdowns. In the fourth quarter aiter Vonder- brink returned a Hughes punt to the twenty-three, Mort Cowgell zoomed over the remaining yard stripes. Burns had a perfect night with his kicking toe. Left: Carl Heilman waiting for the pigskin. Will he catch it? Sorry. BACON... 6 HAMILTON CATHOLIC 7 Every time the Spartans travel to Hamilton, they put on a sluggish performance. What should have been an easy victory, turned out to be a lesson-bearing defeat. Overconiidence seemed to be the answer as Bacon was able to push across but a single toucthWn and missing the conversion. The Rams made their extra point and that was the game. H ! Left: Quit your pushing BACON. . 46 NORWOOD .......................... 0 The Norwood game proved to be good track prac- tice for the Spartans as again the coach emptied the bench. In outplaying Norwood, Bacon had 11 first downs to the Indians' three. Doppes completed six passes out of sixteen that were good for one hundred and fifty yards and three touchdowns. Bacon was held scoreless in the first quarter, but broke loose for three touchdowns in the second. Cowgell, on a trap play, displayed beautiful open-field running when he outrun the Newport sec- ondary and raced seventy-eight yards for the first touchdown. The Spartans got their second score on a pass from Doppes to Nichting, who then raced iiity-four yards to cross the goal. Of the five touchdowns Cow- gell scored three, while Nichting accounted for the other two. Burns converted on four out of five. BACON ...... 13 ELDER .................................. 7 Pulling the upset of the year, Bacon downed the favored Panthers in the second game of GCL double- header. Both Bacon and Elder scored in the first period, a twenty-three yard run for Cowgell and a seven yard plunge by Frey of Elder. In the final period two Doppes' passes, one to Weber and one to Nichting, moved the bcdl to the Elder four. There the bull went over to Elder on the six-inch line On fourth dOWn. Heilmom blocked the Elder punt from the end zone and Welling fell on the ball for Bacon's game winning touchdown. The entire center of the field was mud as you can see from the picture at right. BACON ...... 13 . PURCELL ............................ 14 Once again Purcell upset Bacon's applecart, dis- playing that never-say-die spirit. On their first offen- sive play Bacon tallied on a pass to Cowgell from the ten, pictured right. But Purcell roared right back on a long run to tie the score, 7-7. Bacon's second score was a repetition of the Elder game, when Birkofer blocked a Purcell kick and Amrhein fell on it in the end zone. A bad pass from center kept Burns from converting. In the final period Purcell tied the score and then won the GCL crown when Masset split the uprights. goodwill CDewiew RESERVES How 1:-T. Kearney. R. Witzman, G. LoBuono, P. Hunt, R. Walker, W. They were definitely ear-marked as State Champs, but that honor was not to be realized. Their speed, their lightning-like passing attack, and their deadly accuracy from the floor is proved by the fact that they averaged 61 points per game for the season, while defensively holding the opposition to 39 points per game. N x m On Ianuary 9, Roger Bacon once again played host to the WSAI Iunior Town Meeting. The question being debated was, Should sixteen-year-olds have drivers' licenses? The par- ticipating schools this year were Roger Bacon and Mother of Mercy. The principals for the affirmative were Eleanora Nicholas and Iames Cloran, who stated that the greater number of accidents lies within the 21-26 yeqr-old bracket. On the other hand, Jo Ann Bross and William Burkett, defending the negative, stated that, according to the number of miles driven, there are more accidents in the 16 year-old group. Moderator for the Bacon boys was Fr. Owen. The program moderator was Mr. George Palmer. The program was recorded and played over WSAI a few evenings later.
