Our career as hrgh school students IS raprdly drawrng to a close For twelve long years we ve eagerly ant1c1 pated graduatron, but now that lt IS upon us, rnvoluntarrly we pause for a moment to reflect on our achrevements and shortcomlngs as a class on our records and experrences as 1nd1v1duals and on mrlestones that were reached and passed Looklng at some of the t1ny f1rst graders today rt doesn t seem poss1ble that 1n 1941 we approached the brg om1nous doors of Roe Jan wrth a sense of forebodmg yet wrth a greater sense of prrde for now we were gomg to school at last Not many of that fu'st grade class are Wlth us rn the graduatxng class Many have moved or left our group for vanous reasons but others have Jorned us so that we are a close group of forty frve people today The f11'SI s1x years passed qu1ckly for we were busy learmng many new thmgs about our school and ourselves We parucrpated rn the annual Chrrstmas program each year and staged assembhes for our school mates However the f1rst really memorable occasxon was the Sixth Grade Promotron exercrses We arrrved the followrng September proudly startmg Jumor l-hgh School Our Student Counc1l members were Peggy O Connor Harold Bruns Betty M1ller and Dav1d Streeter In the erghth grade Bobby Brown was our Presxdent and Peggy O Connor and Bob Brown were our Pr1ze Speakxng Representatrves Peggy O Connor Ph1l Churchxll, Betty Mrller and Harold Bruns spoke for our class rn Counc1l Lourse Schafer and Colm Moran won the Elghth Grade Crtizenshrp Awards Our Freshman year found us rrght rn the swmg of Roe Jan clock work Bobby Brown won the Junror Hxgh Pr1ze Speakmg Key Sandra Sayer won the Iumor Hrgh Engllsh Award and Peggy O Connor was elected Treasurer of the Student Counc1l Bob Brown and Alrce Beck were our Counc1l representatrves Helen Geoffroy and Doug Dean were our Class Pres1dents Doug took a four week leave of absence to go to Calrfornra and Carolyn Hxcks spent some t1me rn Flor1da In our Sophomore year Helen Geoffroy Sandra Sayer Walter Merrrfreld and Bob MacN1sh were our Counc1l representatxves and Peggy O Connor was elected Secretary of our Student Government Trymg to brmg honors the class for Prrze Speakrng were Bob Brown and Agnes Amato dent of Student Counc1l Orrrn Brus1e Pat Hare Lourse Schafer, and Tom Varelll were Student Counc1l Representa trves Th1s was the begmmng of one of our b1g years rn Roe Jan Orrm BIUSIC and Harold Bruns attended the FFA convent1on 1n Syracuse and later that year won the Sen1or l-hgh Pr1ze Speakrng Key Gerald MacDonald had the mlsfortune to be SCIIOUSIY lnjured ln an auto accrdent Besldes all thrs ll was our f1rst chance to earn money for our Sen1or year Three round and square dances and our Junror Prom Moonhght and Roses were more act1v1t1es than any PPCVIOUS Iunxor Class had had We felt proud and successful sellrng candy at football games The end of the year found us orderrng our Sen1or r1ngs What a thr11l that was' Sandra Sayer was elected 1953 Edrtor of the Roe Jan News Loutse Schafer became Edrtor of the 53 Yearbook and Bobby Brown was vrctorrous 1n our annual Student Counc1l e1ect1on Durrng our Junror and Sen1or years Nora Jennmgs worked hard at balancmg our budget Our b1g year fmally came, 1952 1953 As Sen1ors of Roe Jan, Betty Mxller was agam our Class Presrdent Our Counc1l Representatxves were Lourse Schafer Pat Hare B111 Brengel and Colm Moran The f1.rst brg actrvrty of the year was our Rrng Banquet held at the St Charles Hotel in Hudson Now we were really Sen1ors Our Sen1or Planmng Day was a few weeks later when we tr1ed to plan our actxvmes for the comrng year Lourse Schafer and Al1ce Beck went to the E S S P A Convent1on rn Syracuse rn the early fall wrth Mr W1ll1ams Our Sen1or Play, Take Your Med1c1ne we feel was one of the bxggest achlevements 1n our school l1fe Roe Ian Peggy O Connor was captarn of the cheerleaders and Sandra Sayer was chosen as our D A R, representa trve A number of other tradxtlonal ceremonres ended our Sen1or year our weekend trrp to New York the Sen1or Farewell Dance, Baccalaureate and Graduatlon but as our years at Roe Jan came to a close, we sadly regretted that we had to leave beh1nd the many old memories and fnends but at the same trme, were proud and thankful for everythlng our Alma Mater had grven to us 641 . . . . , , , ' ., . .
