On one occasion she was laying a smoke screen for a heavy cruiser and was taken under fire by a light shore battery. She was unable to locate the battery, but even though she was straddled several times she continued her screening assignment. Finally she was relieved with the terse order over the voice-radio RODMAN , Get the hell out of there before you get hurt. For several days of this period the RODMAN operated in a mixed United States and French Task Force under the French Admiral Jaujard.
