ADMINISTRATION l63l M S! th JOHN J YOUNG Our Superintendent of Schools has had a busier job than ever this year with new emergencies cropping up all the time and with new service groups need nig attention For instance he is in charge of the spring bond drive in Rocky River However he has handled the many and varied problems with his usual good management and it is to him that we owe praise for our able and efficient school system with its consistently high educational standards MARSDON LJ, GRUBB The principal of our high school Mr. Grubb directs the complicated details of the office most efficiently and still finds time to cope with the problems of the student body, His years of experience have given him a thorough insight into the difficulties students meet, while his understanding makes it possible for him to speak helpfully and freely, Mr, Grubb's sincerity and genuine concern for the students have earned him the respect and friendship of both pupils and faculty, HARRY M. The two losses came at the hands of Cleariew, and the usually powerful Oberlin eleven. The remaining game was a hard fought battle with Shaker Heights which ended in a score- less tie. As usual, old man injury handicapped the team this year. The more serious injuries were suffered by Bob Springer, Jack Skomp, Dick l-leil, Johnny Heller, and Dick Whelan. JACK PARTRIDGE, Manager GIL MILTENBERGER BOB SPRINGER BOB MILLER DICK MYERS BUD EICHER, Manager 28, is I it At the annual football banquet, held at the end of the season ,Ray Gilmore was elected honorary captoin of the team for the year. Four of the fellows on the squal received all-Southwest Conference honors this year. They were Vic Gustavson, left end, Bill McCormick, right tackle, Ray Sarles, left guard, and Gil Miltenberger, center. Dick Whelan, right halfback, was awarded honorable mention in the Cleveland Press' all-city eleven. The rubber shortage hindered the attendance of out-of-town games this season some- what, but the boys carried on very well in spite of the decrease in number of fans. Next year, however, football and other sports will very probably have a heavy handicap in that attendance will suffer from gasoline rationing. FOOTBALL SUMMARY RIVER 7 BEREA O The Pirates journeyed to Berea for their first conference game of the season, and in one of the year's most exciting games, overpowered their goal, climaxing a long drive. In the third quarter Berea threatened, but failed to penetrate the Pi- rates' line. This was our only night game of the year, and produced the first casualty -Bob Springer, left guard, suffered a ser- ious arm injury. DICK WHELAN ALAN COLLART BILL MCCORMICK DUKE BITLER RIVER I8 PARMA O For the second time in two years River and Parma had to play on a water-soaked grid- iron. However ,the mud bothered the Pi- rates very little as they made three touch- downs. One came in the second quarter on a pass from Heller to Whelan. Whelan also scored the second tally in the third per- iod on a reverse. In the final quarter, Johnny Heller crossed the goal line again. River was hit hard by injury in this game, Dick Heil received a broken nose, and Heller a dislocated arm. DICK HEIL DON KELLY X Jack Skomp Johnny Heller Dave Davies Vic Gustavson Bob Miller Rocky River's four cheerleaders, commonly known as Jinny ,Jody, June, and Joan, have done a fine job their first year, in boosting the morale of foot- ball and basketball teams, by spurring them on with them lively cheers. They were successful in urging more and more students to attend both home and out-of-town games. The four girls, chosen at the end of the last school year by tryouts, went at their new job enthusiastically, making up many new cheers, and creating a fine spirit toward athletics throughout the school. There is nothing more inspiring to a tired football or basketball team than a rousing cheer from the crowd, showing the boys that the entire school is behind them, urging them on to victory. The rain slowed both teams down until the last quarter, when Shaker drove to the Pirates' one foot line. Nevertheless, inspired by fine de- fensive play by guards Davies and Sand- vick, our line held for four straight downs. ln the few remaining minutes River car- ried the ball into enemy territory, but the game ended before they reached scoring distance. In this game Dick Whelan suf- fered a head injury backing up the line. RIVER 7 OBERLIN I3 A victory over Oberlin this year would have meant a conference championship for Riv- er, but their chances began to dim as their opponents scored on a pass in the first half and on a double reverse in the third quart- er. River's score came in the final period when Collart intercepted a pass and raced fifty-five yards to pay dirt. Heil kicked for the extra point, winding up the score at I3-7. RIVER I3 FAIRVIEW O Although the Pirates' chances for cham- pionship had been thwarted by Oberlin, our boys assured themselves of second place as they defeated Fairview on our field. Duke Bitler scored on an end run in the second quarter and at half time River led 7-O. Both teams fought hard in the sec- ond half, the Pirates scoring again when Whelan blocked a punt and Bill McCor- fifty-five Dick Green Chuck Myers Jack Dobson mick recovered the ball behind the opposi- tion's goal. Fairview threatened in the last moments of the game, but the gun sound- ed before they could score. RIVER 30 BEDFORD O Our boys made a fine showing in their last game of the year, despite freezing weath- er and the adverse prediction of the Cleve- land Press as to the outcome of the con- test. Collart and Bitler stole the show with three and two touchdowns respectively. Great playing was shown by the line which constantly refused to allow the other team to gain ground. RIVER I4 AKRON ELLET O For the first time in years the Pirates play- ed their opening game on their home field, defeating Ellet for the second time. In the first quarter Al Collart plunged over for the first touchdown, and Dick Whelan kicked the extra point. A few minutes later, a fine run by Dick Heil brought the ball deep into Ellet's territory and Dick Whelan went over for the second tally and kicked his second extra point of the day. RIVER O CLEARVIEW 7 After their decisive victory over Ellet, the Pirates found the Clearview gridders a very strong team. However, our boys play- ed a fine game all the way, holding the op- position to one touchdown, Dave Davies, sophomore guard, and Bill McCormick ex hibited excellent line play, and Johnny Heller played his usual fine game in the backfield. Out of the six annually scheduled conference games, the Pirates defeated Fairview twice, Oberlin twice, and split two games with Berea, which resulted in a tie between the two teams for the championship. However, our boys did not make as fine a showing in the non-conference games, as they were forced to meet a tough schedule. I J -M 'Flfr X BASKETBALL SUMMARY RIVER vs. ALUMNI Despite many former squad members being in service, a fine turnout was made by the alumni. Jack Skomp and Al Hunt led the Pirates as they downed their opponents, 40-I7. RIVER vs. WEST The boys showed fine spirit in their second game, but the accuracy of the West I-ligh quintet was too much, as River went down in defeat, 2I-32, RIVER vs, BAY The Pirates played their usual exciting game with Bay this time, and, in spite of excellent play, were beaten 32-28. RIVER vs. CLEARVIEW The Clearview boys proved themselves to be as powerful on the basketball court as on the gridiron, by overwhelming the Pirates, 55-26. The opponents exhibit fine offense and defense, RIVER vs. OBERLIN In the season's first conference game, the boys took a big step toward a possible cham- pionship, by defeating Oberlin, 29-I4. Montgomery was high point man with nine, followed by Burke with eight, RIVER vs, MEDINA Taking advantage of Medina's inability to get going until late in the game, River marched to its third victory, 29-22, Mont- gomery led the Pirates with ten points. RIVER vs. FAIRVIEW River showed excellent teamwork as they overpowered Fairview, 22-9 The Pirates, playing wonderful defensive ball, allowing their rivals to score only two points in the second half. RIVER vs, BEREA The fast, tricky Berea cagers, led by Don- ahoe, who scored twenty-four points, were ahead of the Pirates all the way, handing River its first and only conference defeat, 34-26. RIVER vs. BAY In another close and exciting game, the Bay team came through in the last minute of play to outpoint River for the second time this season, 40-38. RIVER vs. CLEARVIEW Both teams played a thrilling game all the way, and victory was nearly ours, until the last seconds of play, when o drive by Clear- view won them the game, 35-34. RIVER vs. FAIRVIEW Sparked by Bob Payne's thirteen points, River's cagers outplayed Fairview once again, by the score of 32-26. RIVER vs. BEREA Fine teamwork was displayed by River in this game as they outpointed the Bereans in a very exciting game, 34-30, This was Berea's first loss of the season, and Rivers fourth conference win. RIVER vs. OBERLIN The season's climax brought the Pirates a tie for championship honors, the first since I929. Led by Gustovson, Burke, and Greene, River won 29-25. RAY SARLES DICK GREENE AL HUNT BUD MONTGOMERY BUD BERKEY DON DEITESFELD, ana M 9 li ln place of the customary Junior High team made up only of freshmen boys a Junior Varsity squad was formed this year composed of ninth tenth and eleventh graders The main purpose of this move was to give training and experience to as many boys as possible for the coming years when they will play on the regular squad. A a result, more boys were given a chance to play than was formerly the case with only a freshmen team. Under the guidance of Coach Evjen the Junior squad participated in five games this season winning two and losing three. Their schedule was far from being an easy one, as two of the three losses were from schools much larger than Rocky Riv- er. The biggest defeat that the boys suf- oopen on m Motts fered was by a margin of only two touch downs The most exciting game of the year was the second with Fairview which the opposition won solely on the strength of a point after touchdown This was Mr Evlens fifth year iand last for the duration of the warl as coach of the Junior High and Junior Varsity teams and he certainly deserves much credit for the teams he has turned out and for the ability he has brought out in so many boys. That same year along came Ray Deeks, who be- gan to show his prowess in the mile and half mile runs. Deeks continued his fine work in '39 and '40, setting records which are still unequaled at River in those events. More records were set by Pirate tracksters in l94O-Ray Hauserman in the low hurdles, Hal McCormick and Gordon Lyons ltiedl in the 220 yard dash, and Jack Doyle in the high jump. In l942 Jack Brooks surpassed all previous marks in the quarter mile, and tied with Bob Hollis for the record in the lOO yard dash, the same year, Ted Walker, Hollis, and Ray Sarles set marks in the pole vault, broad jump, and shot put, respectively, and the half mile and mile relay teams smashed all hitherto school records in their events. However, this year, effects of the war began to present themselves, On top of the fact that much excellent material was lost through graduation last June, many boys departed before the beginning of the present track season in favor of college or the armed forces, and transportation incon- veniences forced the cancellation of the arena meet and the River Relays. But, in spite of the difficulties that present them- selves, the boys have prepared for a highly seccessful season. Early this spring the Pirates held practice meets on the indoor tracks of Marshall and Rhodes. T h e s e meets were not counted as regular ones, however, the main purpose being for the boys to get some practice on an indoor track. The first regular meet of the season came on April 8 at Lorain, and the River 5 ty-one i snr- . ., track squad made a fine showing as they returned home victorious, 67-42. River boys placed in every event, and many first and second places were taken by them, Don Bergmann took first place in the high hurdles and captured second place in the low hurdles, Bob Hollis won the lOO and 220 yard dashes, and took second place in the broad jump, Al Hunt and Whitney Slaght came in first and second in the mile run, as did Bud Eicher and Wib Leopold in the quarter mile, Dave Davies won the half mile with Jim Beck in second place, Ray Sarles was second in the shot put, as were Ted Walker in the pole vault, and Don Kelly in the high jump, and the 880 yard relay team lcomposed of Ed Cook, Don Deitesfeld, Al Collart, and Hollisl and the mile relay team CCollart, Bob Friesner, Eicher, and Leopoldl took first place in their respective events. Rightly, he might be called an unsung hero , for, as each new season comes along, Mr. Mayer, the faculty man- aver of all athletics, is given the job of handling finances for the teams, arranging transportation to out-of-town games, super- vising the sale of tickets, and buying any new or needed equipment for the squads. This year they had several service projects including the making of scrap books for the U. With Jessie Laisy, Alice Walter, Johanna Boergerman, and Jerry Johnson as drum Majorettes, the maroon and white band provided the stir- ring music and colorful maneuvers without which no season is complete. The annual band concert in April pre- sented a fine program of lighter music to an appreciative audience, ORCHESTRA Although it receives little credit for its work, the orchestra is a very necessary part of our school life. Assemblies and evening programs would seem incomplete without the music the ensemble furnishes. Mr. Bowen, our director, works pa- tiently with the student musicians to give them a valuable background of musical training.
