Sollenberger, Dr lohn J. Young. 1 mg Mrs. F. V. Kenney, Mrs. Alice VV, Dolphin, Mrs, Elsie L. Cleverdon. board of education The rapid growth of Rocky River following the depression period sets up two difficult problems for the Board of Education. The first is adequate fin- ancing on a basis which will provide schools of the high type required in a residential community of this kind. The second is to plan and provide adequate facilities for the increasing enrollment. During re- cent months Hlooster School has been re-opened after extensive repairs. Old Beach is to be used as an Administration Building. This will provide addition- al class room space in the High School. These prololems and many others relating to the teaching personnel, maintenance, ground, materials, and equipment are given careful attention hy the Board. Rocky River is fortunate in having people with experience and ability who have civic interest of a type which impels them to give freely of their time and effort for the good of the comnmnity. They receive no reward except the satisfaction which comes from doing a valuable service for onc's neighbors. x faculty Among the new members on the teaching staff this year were Miss Priscilla Boyer, public speaking teacherg Mr. Edward Mulvihill, football and tennis coach and instructor in book- keeping and business arithmeticg and Mr. Arthur Bridenbaugh, chemistry, physics, general science, and algebra instructor. The new teachers have all taken a very definite place in our school activities, and the old teachers have continued making themselves more indispensable to us. The faculty has a social group called the 'l'eachers' Asso- ciation for the purpose of giving parties and becoming better acquainted. Each year they elect a president, this year's being Mr. Bowen. It has been the custom to have four parties a year: however, this year they had but two, one at Christmas and one in the spring. The fall and spring gatherings are enjoyed especially, for they are often picnics in Metropolitan Park. In spite of all that is said about teachers in general, we students really appreciate their patience and perseverance and wish to thank our faculty for their help. TWENTY senior class will T seems that the members of the Rocky River High School Senior Class of 1937 held a class reunion last night in honor of their being out of high school for twenty long years. The reunion was evidently a most successful one, as the bulk of the Class isn't home nursing headaches today, nor is it sick with indigestion or over-indulgence, but rather, the whole Class, excluding none, has spent a quiet and peaceful night fexcept for a few of the more boisterous members, in the local house-gown. Not one member, not two members, but all of the mem- bers fexeluding myselfj are in jail charged with disorderly conduct and a general disturbing of the peace. As a result, each member of the 37,' Class has carved a niche for himself in the county jail,s Hall of Fame. Let's look them over and see how the Class as a whole has fared during the last twenty years. Here is Margaret Fergus who now, because of her mother's retirement, runs the High School cafeteria. It has been said that two chickens run through the soup now instead of one. Ah, here is Ilse lklueller, who came home from Germany especially for this reunion. VVe hear that she has been there since she went on the 1937 German Tour, and that she is now Working for Hitler. Margaret Cobb, Jean Horning, and Susan Sullivan have been employed by ESQUIRE to make the jokes funnier, the record in the Hall of Fame tells us. VVe're glad to say that Edna Park finally married her 'dream man'. As a sideline, she and Jeanne Hintzelmann run an up-to-date model school. Bob Stangl and Jack Springer have invested most of their capital to buying land in Little America in preparation for the coming real estate boom. TWVE WTY-UNIX E, the graduating seniors of the class of 1937, having been proven, partially at least, in our sane mind, do hereby bequeath, will, and donate all articles as speci- fied in the following document: Collectively we leave to the faculty and re- maining students our memory, that they may cherish it. y To the incoming seniors we leave 207, the sen- ior homeroom. Accept and inhabit it with the reverence and respect due to hallowed ground. To the school at large we leave all stray text- books, scrap paper, worn out chewing gum, and a strawberry lollypopjn the second seat of the third row in 207. Individually we bequbath the following: Dick Bailey leaves his skill with the tennis racket to Helen Hibbard, but he thinks heill take his newly-acquired record with him. Ed Finley leaves akwell worn path between study hall and the office. Marjorie Abbott sorrowfully leaves her pals, Mr. lllayer and Mr. Bowen. Margaret Cobb and Vivian Mitchell jointly leave their nerve-racking giggles to Miss McKee and Miss Gray. , Bill Henkes leaves this yearls crop of whis- kers to anyone with nerve enough to wear it. Harvey Dworken leaves his ability to explos- ively cope with Mr. Mcliane to Ed Doty, who is also leaving. Phil Dutton leaves his villain-like appear- ance to Harry Ashby. Charlie Stender and Harry Larsen leave the German band to posterity. flt got lost some- where in the rushj. Dolores Smith leaves the Newman Studio with some good advertising material. Treasurer Junior Talent Night was the first thing that the Juniors did after electing officers. This was held in the middle of November and was a success both in the eyes of the audience and of the treasurer. The pro- gram under the direction of Miss Strawn, Mr. Rich- ards, and M r. Mayer, consisted of fourteen acts which took place on board an ocean liner the last night out. There was every thing on the program from a harmonica duet to a mock wedding. ln February they presented the VVashington Birth- day Ball at Beach Gym featuring Ho raee Sambrooli,s Orchestra. Though they lost. money on the dance every one that attended enjoyed himself immensely. mi In April the Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the High School Gym. VVe a1'e sure, however, that they did have something that River teams in the two years pre- vious had decidedly lacked, and that was fight! By making no excuses for their defeats, but by playing their hardest and being sure they had given their best, they exhibited a spirit and deter- mination new to River teams. From the two disastrous years previous to this season most of the players had a feeling of inferiority. This was a great hindrance to their moral when playing and took the fight out of them-but, this year with the help of fresh material, Coach Skomp and his fiery pep talks, and much will-power, the team overcame this handicap to a great extent. After taking a lick- ing the first half of the game, they would come back the second half and play a good hard game, even though conscious of de- feat. The ',l'eam had such a following this year that the atten- dance paid the bills for the new football equipment purchased by the school. THIRTY SIX lll I VARSITY ISASK ETBAIJ , TEAM First row: li. FURTY-ONE band liveryone is proud of our Rocky River High School Band this year. l'nder the direction of Mr. George Bowen, it has shown continual im- provement and has truly become worthy ot' the fine support given it hy the student body. The band began the fall foothall season with a bang! The members worked hard to develop their marching technique and are to he compli- mented on their fine results and perseverance. That most exciting sports season was due partly at least to the flashy performances of the hand under the lea'dership of its new drum major, Dick Hutchinson. During the year the hand played for many assemblies. Un l+'ehruary 12 at 8:00 P. M., it gave a band concert under the direction of Mr. Bowen in the high school auditorium and was very well received hy the puhlic. All in all, the hand can certainly look hack on 1936-37 as one of its niost successful school y8Rl'S. .arsen, M. Case, V. Preslan, ll.. Koch. P. Jones, ll. lleiron I first How--M. Shiv, XV. Starting oft' by giving tl1e first Rocky River dance of L the year in October, the club later sponsored a few after school dances. Last fall the two trips which were made to Center- ville Mills by the boys proved to be both amusing and exciting for all who attended. After each of the jour- neys, the members returned, sorry that their fun had to end so soon. Because they have had so many good times there, they regretted the fact that they were unable to journey to Centerville again in the spring. This year, in accordance with tl1e custom, church meetings were attended once a month and a larger variety of chu1'ches than ever was visited. In addi- tion to this, the regular supper meetings were held monthly with practically 100 per ce11t attendance each time. At most of tl1e weekly meetings during the year, discussions on various topics of innnediate interest were held, then, at times, various persons were pre- sented to talk on these topics. Une of the big events of the year was the basket- ball game between the .junior and senior n1en1be1's. Though the game started rather quietly, it finished in a blaze of action with the se11io1's victorious. At present, to round out an eventful year, the mein- bers of the club are planning on traveling to l'ut-in- Bay and on holding their annual Sweetheart Ban- quet i11 May. The officer.: for the first semester were Joe Stone- hnrner, presidentg Jinnny Beam, vice-president, Howard Hall, secrctaryg Bob Christensen, Treas- U 1'C1'. For the second semester Harvey Dworken was president, Bob Hohmann, vice-president, Bob Yeak- ley, secrtaryg YVilbur Dexter, treasurer. iyc11cu As 0110 of H10 most P0pll12ll' :11111 i11t0r0sti11g 111'g:111iz:1ti1111s of our sc-11001, Iy:1k11, H10 ll2L1lll'C i'1ll1l, 11:1s 011.1oy011 :1 most s11Cc0ssf111 y0:1r. 1NI00t- ing 111 t110 11011105 of H10 ll1ClllbCl'S cvcry 11ll'CC w001as, t110 011111 1I?LS 11:Lt1 111:111y fi110 prog1':1111s, 0:1011 01111sist111g of :1 ro11 0:111 011 :1 ll2L1lll'C sub- joct, H10 1111s1110ss of H10 lllCL'1'1llg, il HpU2L1iCl', g:11111-s, :11111 l'Uf1'L'S1llllCl11S. As yet, it has held only a few debates which are said to have been rather well done in view of the greeness of the neophytes. For each debate, the members of the club divide into two groups, one, the affir- mative, and the other acting as the nega- tive. Of these groups, only three persons in each have a chance to speak in the final debate. but those who are not chosen to speak have much to do to help the speakers gather material. It is hoped that by the end of the year, eaeh member' will have partivipated in at least. one debate. This plan, plus the able direction of Miss Boyer and Mr. Richards, makes it seem very possible that the Club will enjoy much glory and will make much advancement in coming years. 4. Greiuer, Mr Dru inter-class council One hears very little about the Inter-Class founcil, for it is one of those behind the scenesi' organizations that works silently but effectively. The Inter-Class Council was organized in 1932 with Mr. Grubb as its supervisor. Two people were chosen to represent each class, plus the iresidents of the ninth tenth eleventh and I a s s twelfth frrades. Durin the Vear of 1935-36, is r t li U . ltld Yvalchh was president of Inter-Class Coun- . v T - 5 ell, and Bob X eakley was president for the term of 1936-37. The Inter-Class Uouncil sets up certain stau- clards each year which it nlust accomplish. Each year it works out a calendar for all of the social activities of the year. It represents the school as a whole in the case of class disputes. This year the Council has helped develop a school song. It has also taken two or three visits to different schools, and has then compared those schools with ours to see if ours can be improved. l I l '1'Y-ON E hi-tide The Paper Club, sponsored by Miss Marker, has been very active this year. Last fall it pub- lished an insignificant, four-page, Inimeograplx- ed sheet, but improved each issue so much that by Christmas time the paper had reached a size of twenty-three pages. The staff was greatly handicapped by having no experience and few ideas, so a plan was evolved whereby the junior editor gains half a year's experience under the tutelage of the senior editor before actually being on his ownf, Finally, in February, a sufficient circulation and capital having been attained, plans were inade for a printed paper which inade its ap- 6 f 1 pearance on March 6. lhe new paper also experienced a period of evolution, for it is en- tirely different froln the nliineographed publi- cation. The staff has held the policy that the Hi-Tide is for the student body, and, the efforts of the entire Paper Club have been directed toward the aceomplislnnent of this end. 'irst Row-lfl. Chosen for scholarship, lezulership, character, and service, the students were selected in the same manner as in former years, Five percent of the senior class were chosen in January and five percent more in April with five percent of the junior class. This is the only school organization selecting ineinbers for their personal ability, and the only club standing exclusively for the worli, character, and service of the students. It is an honor to be a ineinber, and should be a challenge to every student in Rocky River High School. The officers this year were Robert Yealaley, president: Marvin Shie, vice-president, and Madge Ularli, secretary-treasurcr. The nieinbers inducted in April were Mar- garet Vohb, Jean Patch, Louise Heller, lVillia1n Grt en, Elizabeth Street, Richard Greiner, Irene King, Frank Abbott, Phyllis Sollenberger, and Maruiorie lVilloughby.
