I ' ve enjoyed helping students understand the idea presented in lectures and discussions, and have learned quite a bit from the course, the faculty, and the students. I ' ve also enjoyed assisting students with writing although it has been something of a new experience and has even helpe me improve my own writing skills. I have especially enjoyed working with the IL! faculty and seeing the interworkings of a fundamental Rocky course. - Crystal Parrish BHSHBHHI ▲ Losekamp Auditorium served as the lecture hall for over 250 ILS students. ► Lectures prove to be a good time. ▼ Freshman, Trevor Thomas, takes a logical approach to lecture. A WILD EXPERIENCE! I really en- joyed my day hike into the Beartooth Mountains. It was a nice break from my everyday routine such as home- work, problems, etc. It relaxed me and gave me time to myself to think about life in a different environment, the wil- derness environment. I also met some really neat people on this trip. — Ann Lucas 18 I Integrated Liberal Studies ACADEMICS Academics Division 19 Restless Aviators Off to a flying start. ' ' — Ben Diggs Rocky Mountain College ' s Aviation program got off to a flying start this year with about 50 students enrolled in the program. Thirty-six of these stu- dents began flight training and should complete all requirements for their Pri- vate Pilot certificate by the end of the first semester. These along with the students who have previous flight training, will begin aviation courses of a more traditional nature during the second semester. The ground school for the program is taught by Mr. Ben Diggs, who is also the Director of Aviation at Rocky. Flight training was conducted through Cor- porate Air and Lynch Flying Service located at Logan International Airport. Rocky ' s aviation program allows the student to receive a Bachelor ' s of Sci- ence Arts in Aviation Studies and in- cludes professional pilot training; along with a minor or double major from RMC ' s twenty seven other ma- jors. — Wayne Cavill Sophomore, Bill Southard, does an in- strument check before starting the en- gine. Safety always comes first. Here, Bill tests the wings. 20 I Aviation Studies It ' s really cool the way a person can get his li- cense in just one se- mester. — Kirk Rabe I love the Aviation Pro- gram! It ' s the reason I came back to Rocky. ' — Ty Orth When I am up there in the clouds I am in control and it ' s great! ' 1 — Trey Thompson Rocky ' s own Top Gun, Curt Wyss. Curt does a wing check as pari of a pre-f light check. Aviation Studies 21 Equestrian Studies l l e all work toward these goals with single-minded intensity. — Tina Burgan Rocky Mountain College ' s equestrian program may be small, but it ' s one of the top three in the country. Bob and Penny Nance started this program only two short years ago and it has already required a new barn to house this year ' s freshmens horses. Togeth- er with our advisor and new train- er Bill Bormes, our vet-in- residence and professor Liz Con- ger, OVM, and our very dynamic director who can rise to any oc- casion, Penny Nance, how can this program help but be a success?! The equestrian club and stu- dents have already put on a very successful dance and horse show. Trail rides are a part of the cur- riculum along with English equi- tation and western horsemanship, anatomy, training, breaking, and sometimes just goofing off and en- joying each others company. Sem- inars are given by outside trainers to vary and improve certain skills. Bill even gets on a horse occa- sionally. Already scheduled for the spring are another dance and more shows. We all work toward these goals with single-minded in- tensity. Come up and look around sometime soon! — Tina Burgan Jeanie MacNamara, sophomore, walks her horse around the arena. The program is very ex- pensive, but very much worth it! — Glenn Anthony Working with Bili Bormes is great! He ' s professional. He ' s what makes the pro- gram. He ' s super posi- tive! — Joel Long Watching Bill get bucked around by Kissy during trail ride was a special treat! — Tina Burgan I love all the personal at- tention we get whenever we need it. — Laurie Auer Lorraine Evangeline does her morn- ing chores. Equestrian Studies Physics Fundamental Physics is the most popular course in the physics department this year. The course covers the gen- eral laws and mechanics of the universe. This class con- sists of three lectures and two labs per week. A total of eight classes will be offered this year in the Physics department at Rocky Mountain College. Again, these courses cover just about everything related to the field of Physics. — Aaron McDonnell Hurry! I gotta get to class and find out what happended last weekend! ' ' — Sue Arvik Rocky has a very progressive Biology program, thanks to Claire Oakley. — j Jean Lyford Biology The Biology department at Rocky Mountain College offers twel different courses this year. Any one of which will surely cover I interests of anyone thinking about a Biology major or minor. Botany, which is considered one of the harder classes at Rock has a comfortable six students in the class. The class can considered one of the harder classes because of the amount) information covered. For example, the class covers the anatomic physiological, genetic, and evolutionary aspects of plants. This p; ticular course consists of three lectures and one three hour lab week. — Aaron McDonnel 24 J Sciences at Rocky Geology There are many courses to be offered this year in the Geology department ranging from General Geology to Thesis in Geology. In this year ' s General Geology course, the topics of mineral, rocks, volcanoes, weathering, earthquakes, and plate tectonic will be covered. Occasionally, field trips are also included as part of the course. This year ' s class which consisted of approximately 45 students, toured and studied rock formations in the Beartooth and Big Horn Basin. — Aaron McDonnell I really enjoyed the story about Professor Thompson getting his head stuck in the cave! — Heather Haas Dr. Graham is a great fisherman! I enjoy the 15 hours a week I spend in the lab. Just kiddin! — Jim Loughr ie Chemistry This year ' s Chemistry Department is really going strong with courses such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or even Biochemistry. With all these courses offered it is easy to see just how well all aspects of the field of chemistry is covered. With aaproximately 50 students, this year ' s Organic Chemistry class will be studying the classification, syn- thesis, and reaction of compounds which contain carbon. This class has two lectures and four lab periods per week. An expected highlight of this course is having the option of making wine or beer during lab. There ' s always a good turn out for this one! — Aaron McDonnell Sciences at Rocky 25 26 1 Mathematics and Foreign Languages Education and English 27 Computer Sciences On the campus of Rocky Mountain College, we have the use of two computer labs that are at the convenience of the students who attend classes here. The locations of these computer labs are in the basement of the Bair Science Building and the Fortin Education Center. The computer lab in the Fortin Center is under the direction of John E. Cech who is the Director of Computer Applications programs. John ' s primary function is to coordinate Computer Applications in conjunction with the Faculty, Academic Dean, and the Continuing Ed. department. John also coordinated computer contract training here at Rocky. Professor Dale Zimdars is a History teacher here at Rocky and he also teaches a few classes in computers. Professor Zimdars actively par- ticipates in decisions that are made for the Fortin Computer lab and at one time was on the Computer committee here at Rocky. Birdeena Dapples is an instructor of Computer Science Math here at Rocky Mountain College. We owe Birdie Dapples a lot, if it would not of been for her there probably would not have been a Computer Science Minor or a Computer Lab here at Rocky Mountain College. So Mrs. Birdie Dapples, we thank you, for your support, experience, and knowl- edge of computers and their applications. Bruce Rice is the Director of Information Systems in the Bair Science Center Computer Lab. Mr. Rice is in charge of the Administrative and Academic MainFrame Computing System (2755 MainFrame). The major part of Mr. Rice ' s duties is maintaining the Administraion ' s DataBase, which serves virtually every area of the Administration. He is also involved in Hardware Troubleshooting, and coordinating computer pur- chases on campus. We should all take the opportunity to say thanks to all the wonderful people who have become directly and indirectly related to both of the computer labs here on campus, and for making things easier for us, the people of Rocky and the Billings Community who appreciate tech- nological advances. — Sid Fichter conomics Chris Stevens and Kelly Holtsmith work on the computers in the Fortin _ ...rs. There were many ups and downs, wins and losses, times of great encouragement, and others of extreme dis- couragement. But though the year, the athletes of Rocky faced these challenges. Above all, they kept the Rocky spirit. 66 ROCKY 68 m. — « r  ' v v FOOTBALL •j n , 69 Rocky Football: Talk about restless! Winter brought more than a change of seasons to Rocky ' s football program.
