We, the co-editors, of the Yellowstone have enjoyed a hectic year of trying to catch you pictorially during your academic and candid life here at Rocky. As you first go through this year ' s Yellowstone, we hope that it will encourage you to have as much fun, if not more good times next year. But as the years go by and you pick it up it will bring back the happy, sad, and exciting moments you experienced at Rocky Mountain College. We ' d like to give a special thanks to Roger Davis for the patience and the many hours he spent working on the annual with us. Nancy Brayko Tom Bird This was the first symbol of Rocky Mountain College that freshmen and trans- fers see — it soon becomes familiar and a proud symbol to the students. This is very familiar to Rocky students and although it is not the largest library in the world it does serve its students well. It is growing every year to meet the students needs. ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE Billings, Montana 59102 OFFICE OF THE DEAN May, 1966 MESSAGE TO CLASS OF 1966 Commencement suggests accomplishment, that something undertaken has been brought to a successful conclusion. But it also implies a larger meaning, that there still remains a road ahead, with yet another desti- nation, or, in other terms, that man is uniquely an unfinished creation. To him, it seems, has been given the task of completing himself. The phrase of our late president applies here, as we consider the burden and the glory of man ' s assignment, the freedom, the responsibility, the use of human resources, either to finish himself or to finish himself off. What to do with our possibilities, as a race and as individuals, is the inescapable question written large in human life. A distinguished college president (William De Witt Hyde) once wrote of the unfinished nature of man and concluded with these lines: Since what we choose is what we are, And what we love we yet shall be, The goal may ever shine afar; The will to win it makes us free. May your use of your life ' s possibilities in the years ahead make for freedom and for gladness. The best wishes of your college go with you. Lawrence F. Small To a Busy Man Who left a major national position as General Secretary for Higher Education of the United Church of Christ to come West to face the test and task of furthering the growth of a small college. Whose wisdom, ability, and optimistic outlook has been instrumental in establishing a program that has contributed greatly to the academic and physical stature of the College and given impetus to long range planning for continued growth. Who has always been willing to accept, without complaint, the lone- liness of leadership in critical times. Who possesses the fortitude to make difficult decisions at times when they must be made regardless of the effects upon him personally. Who has taken the time to act on behalf of individuals in an unseen and unsung manner — doing such small things as securing an overcoat for a needy student to more complex ones such as personally finding financial assistance from outside resources to enable another to make it through. Little is known of these things. Little will be for they remain a part of the silent service of Christian involvement in which he believes. Whose phenomenal drive and resilient spirit has enabled him to re- turn from the depths of serious illness to again serve with constancy a cause he has long championed — excellence in private church-related higher education. For these attributes and many others, we respectfully dedicate this 1966 Yellowstone to Dr. Philip Monroe Widenhouse, third president of Rocky Mountain College. Faith in an institution enabled him to give up his first love of teaching to shoulder willingly and well difficult administrative tasks and give to many problems , both large and small, his full attention. Hi After four years or more of hard work and decisions. Rocky graduated the largest senior class it has ever had. It is only a short distance from Rocky and when the snow arrives it seems even shorter. Red Lodge skiing again. Which slope should it be? Overlooking the Rocky Mountain College Campus from on top of the Rims is a large Cross erected by members of the class of 1956. He made this philosophy meaningful by living by it daily. To him living meant giving. His constant kindness and concern for individuals proved that Christian Faith can be a living and vital part of man ' s life. His influence on others, as a result of his teaching, attained a chain reaction state even as he lived. This will continue. . . . Rocky ' s biggest year in forensics included participation by 20 students in 7 tournaments, 4,500 miles of travel, and the winning of several trophies. In October, Alain Mehl and Rodney Davis tied for 3rd in debate at the Eastern tourna- ment. At Kearney, Nebraska, in November, teams of Mehl and Davis, Roger Hawthorne and Ed Reiter, and Dave Traxler and Bill Pruett won 9 of 15 debates. Hawthorne won Rocky ' s 1st trophy of the year at Bozeman in January by winning the oratory contest. He repeated in the Wyomont tournament at Rocky in February as Davis took 1st in extemporaneous speaking, and Hawthorne and Reiter captured 2nd in debate. The most prestigious win of the year came at the state tournament held at Rocky in early April when Hawthorne won the state championship in oratory and the huge Montana Power trophy for Rocky. Nicola Kouttab took 3rd and John Feathers was in the semi-finals of the same event. Virginia Madeen and Bob Loeffler were in the finals of interpretation. A week later, Hawthorne, Reiter, Pruett and Davis represented Montana Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Delta at the province convention and tournament at Gearhart, Oregon, on the Pacific Ocean. In the Big Sky tournament at Missoula April 28-30, Hawthorne and Mehl tied for 5th place among 46 teams in debate, and Hawthorne took 4th in oratory. The forensics season ended with Hawthorne representing Montana men at the Interstate Oratorical Contest held at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, May 5 and 6. Debaters engaged in 101 rounds of contest debate. In team debate, they won 43 and lost 44, a commendable record considering that nearly all were in their first year of college debating. They met some 28 colleges and universities from 10 states — North Dakota to Wash- ington, Oregon to Kansas and Iowa. Other students who participated in forensics were John Paulson, Jenni Aley, Bob Ramsey, Mary Lou Frisbee, Mickey Dobbins, Kathleen Everhart, Allen Siroky, Keith Money, Jerry Hurley and Tom Bird. O ' NeilPs autobiographical play (he ' s Edmond, the young- est son with tuberculosis) isn ' t an easy one for college students to perform. Its monologues are long, call for constant shifting of emotions from joy to anger to despair to hope. Director Cbaltes Heunerding- er s cast did it masterfully. The viewer felt both pity and disgust as Joseph Demyon Jr. as Jamie and Gregory Kastl as Edmund baited and sorrowed with their father, Roger Haw- thorne, over the failure of then- mother, Virginia Madera, to kick the drug habit Viewers seemed to move in with the maid Cathleen, Mar- garet Lough, rather than watch in detachme nt You felt you were watching the Tyrone fami- ly at its machinations rather than observing a play about the Irish actor and his family. The play was well cast and well performed. Curses which interspersed the Tryone male c onvers ation were voiced like the author intended, not with the usual emphasis of an am- ateur player relishing the oppor- tunity. For those who don ' t recall call (be plot, it starts after breakfast If s a calm scene as father James lights his ci- gar and appears solicitous about the looks and welfare of an ob- Long Day ' s Journey into Night Hawthorne and Madeen vrausly worse-for-someoung-or- other wife in a frowsy gown. You are aware this is the calm before the storm which builds as you find ont James Tyrone is a bit of a miser, his eldest son Jamie is a drinking, wenching bum and Edmund took consumption while seeking his own wav in the seaoorts of the world. Mama Tyrone shifts from the days of now back to her joys in the convent, playing the pi- ano, her romance with the hand- some young actor and what his penny pinching ways have done to them all when they wind up in the stark climax. Mass madness Miss RMC Pageant This year we started a new preliminary event for the Miss RMC Pageant. Each organization and class on campus choose a candidate to represent them. Nineteen lovely and talented girls competed Thursday evening, before the judges. The candidates were 1st row; Nicki Endicott, Jan Huffman, Peggy Lowe, Judy James, Carolyn Scanlin, Carolyn Cerdis, Judy Schroeder.
