The painting is by Erika Koerber Trapp, class of ' 58, daughter of Language Professor Karl Koerber of Rocky Mountain. The scene is the lily pool and fountain, donated by the Poly- technic class of ' 33. Tyler Hall is in the background. The color printing is by Gail-Billings Advertising. My special regards and best wishes go with those of you who were members of my classes in Psychology from 1955 through ' 58. I will always cherish the memory of your enthusiasm and interest. May God go with you, 7 5 I Sl xine Sorum !( ■N. 3US A ESS MAMGE S Gary B eweir— Pat Tbwnsend ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE J Billings , u v ana Foreword From cover to cover you will find a list of names, pictures of friends and a picture sequence of events which we of the 1959 Yellowstone staff hope will recall pleasant memories of the past year at RMC. In our book we have tried some new ideas and have reused some old ones. We hope the effect is pleasing. A special thank you to everyone for being so helpful in making this year ' s YELLOWSTONE possible. To the Seniors we wish the best of luck. We hope Rocky has given you four of the most memorable years of your lives. To the rest of the supporters of the Green and Gold we say happy summer and we ' ll see you next year! Dedication DR. GEORG WANNFRIED B. S. , M. S. , Ph. D. , Institute of Technology, Munich, Germany It has been the custom each year to dedicate the school annual to a worthy individual who has particularly deserved the appreciation of the graduating class and the school during the past year. This year, we wish to dedicate our book to one who has been unable to share the past nine months with us, DR. GEORG WANNFRIED. DR. WANNFRIED has spent 7 years as a professor of Chemistry at RMC. In addition to contributing to the school through his work, he has been active in the social activities of the school and he has al- ways been a friend and companion to many of the students throughout his years here. Those of us who knew him have felt his absence. Therefore it is with the deepest respect that we dedicate the 1959 YELLOWSTONE to DR. GEORG WANNFRIED. In tAemoriam And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls , Shall long keep his memory green in our souls, M (Thomas Moore) We, the students of Rocky Mountain College, find that words are inadequate to express our feelings at the loss of one of our students whose life on the RMC Campus had hardly begun. It is with our most humble respect that we dedicate this page to DALE ROBINSON. President ' s Message DR. PHILIP M. WIDENHOUSE B.A. , Wofford College B. D. , Chicago Theological Seminary D. D. , Chicago Theological Seminary L. L. D. , Pacific University D. D. . Northland College My first year as President coincides with your senior and final year at Rocky Mountain College. I shall always remember with appreciation the class of 1959, the first graduating class under my administration as President. The free and gracious way in which seniors and students of Rocky Mountain College have wel- comed the Widenhouse family into the College will always be gratefully appreciated. I welcome you now into the alumni and will look forward to many years of working together for the continued growth and success of the College. Together we will make of Rocky Mountain College all that we hope and dream for it. There will always be a warm welcome to each of you to return to the campus and renew the friendships formed during these four eventful years. Dean ' s Message DR. ERNEST R. WOOD B. A. , University of Ohio B. S. , University of Ohio M. A. , Clark University Ph. D. , University of Chicago. We at Rocky have seen significant developments in recent years under two presidents — Dr. Herbert W. Hines and Dr. Philip M. Widenhouse. Both have served the College devotedly ; they have dreamed great dreams for the future and worked tirelessly for their realization. You who are upper class men have witnessed the fulfillment of one of these dreams. When you came the beautiful new library was still a dream, with President Hines, Librarian Dr. Kuhns and a committee working long hours to translate their vision into a blueprint. You saw the groundbreaking. At our last Commencement Dr. Hines participated in the laying of the cor- nerstone. In June Dr. Widenhouse will participate in the dedication. The library is a symbol of many developments during your student days. It is a symbol also of hands joined across the years, reaching back to the founding of higher education in Montana in 1883 and forward to join other hands in the future to make a significant contribution to education every- where. You too have contributed — in the development of responsible student government, in raising the level of academic achievement and in maintain- ing an enviable record in athletics. A high level of performance in music, drama and on deputation teams has not only enriched the life of the campus but has had its impact on many communities in Montana and Wyoming. Many of you have contributed through organizations and committees to campus life. Some have helped to construct the new Chapel in the Pines. You have all contributed to the fund for a Student Union. With each new advance your degree from Rocky will become more valuable. Rocky ' s future is in part your future, and your future is in part Rocky ' s future. We all join in wishing the seniors Godspeed as they move on to new adventure in their future lives. I trust that through your experience at Rocky you have a better understanding of the world in which you live, and that you have gained a new appreciation of your potentialities and greater confidence in your ability to live and work creatively. May all who meet you respect you for your wholesome, constructive Christian influence. Secretaries Vice-President REV. CLARENCE G. SPELLMAN B. Captain STEVE DYCHE BOB KELSO GABY NELSON Moments to Remember Sept. SEPTEMBER 13-20 Orientation Week opened another year at R.M. C. New students faced a week filled with placement tests, dances, and new acquaintences. Old students returned and registration officially opened another school year. The opening game of the football season saw the Bears bow to a victorious: Powell team. 29 - Oct. 10 The freshmen felt the effects of the witching season as they were forced tc don ridiculous costumes of clasl clothes and green beanies. OCTOBER With the football season came Home- coming and a series of memorable events which included the Freshman- sponsored snake dance and bonfire This was followed by a juke box dance with a floor show and finally all hand were employed to deck the floats fo] the coming parade. 11 The big day brought sunshine, a parade and a Bears victory over the Northern Lights. Queen Shirley Brown and her attendants, Carolyn Lammers, Audrey Corcoran, Jackie Kelso and Beverly Tescher, reigned over the festivities which were climaxed by the semi- formal dance in the Tech. Rec. 31 The wierd hour arrived and many RMC goblins and gremlins went on the Circle K hayride, returning to a dance in the Kave. NOVEMBER Rocky lost the Tomahawk to Eastern for the second year in a row. 20-22 The campus was filled with the music and dancing of Brigadoon, under the direction of Mr. Philip Turner. Kathy Pobanz and Tom Quilling starred in Rocky ' s first musical comedy. 29 The Bears began the basketball season by defeating Ricks 75-71. DECEMBER 13 The Circle K Sock Hop brought out many happy soles adorned in bright socks. Homecoming Pre-Christmas activities were started with the Yule Log Dinner, Barbara Patterson put the match to the log. The dinner was followed by another tradition, the Drama Club ' s production of A Child Is Born, starring Elfie Christiansen and David Dover. The Christmas Formal put the finishing touch on the evening and on the year, as the students made plans for their holidays at home. JANUARY A new year and new hope as work re- sumed on the new library. The coming; of final week kept everyone on their intellectual toes for most of the month. The Choir took their tests and were off. On tour once again, they enjoyed eleven days of concerts, practice and travel. Following finals the Alumni held their annual Candlelight Supper. FEBRUARY Bubble bubble boiler trouble caused inconveniences for several weeks as chilly Montana Hall was closed to classes. The day before Valentine ' s Day brought the Sweetheart Ball. Sweetheart Queen of the campus, Elfie Christiansen, was crowned, and with her attendants, Pat Beidler, Mary Cunningham, Donna Schell, and Carol Weigand, reigned over the affair. The cold February winds blew up a surprise party for campus favorites, Nancy and Dave Crowe, who left for Michigan. 23-27 RE Week arrived with daily chapel services and the Reverend William Lindsay as featured speaker for the week. MARCH The gentlemen of RMC were honored by the AWS-sponsored Bachelor Dance. Greg Wilcox received the title of Most Eligible Bachelor, Runners-up were Johnny Yates, Gary Nelson, Sam Highland, Dick Carpenter and Dan Burns. 19 The Diary ot Anne Frank, starring Raye Bottomley and Veryl Leech, opened for a five-day run in Losekamp Hall. 27 Play tour with The Diary took the cast and crew to many parts of the state. APRIL 4 The Kimball Hall Mardi Gras at the Kave produced laughs and lots of fun. 10-12 The Church Vocations Conference was a big success with 250 persons attend- ing. 10 The Bears split their opening baseball games in a doubleheader with Powell, losing the first and winning the second. 17 Lois Steele again won the prize in the SEA Talent Show. 24 Congratulations to the newly-elected Student Council were handed out at the Alden Hall Mad Party. Tom Quilling and Irvin Scheidt were elected as President and Vice-President of the Council. The Mad Party, which was held in the attic of Alden Hall, featured the crowning of Frabert Stobie as Alfred E. Neuman. MAY Clean-up Day finally arrived and rakes and old clothes were dragged out as wind and students cleared the campus of leaves and gum wrappers. Circle K sponsored a roller-skating party which resulted in the usual bruises in the usual places. May was off to a splashing start with a swimming party at the YMCA. Wind on the rims mixed with the wel- come aroma of steaks as the Rho Alpha Rho boys treated the whole school at the Zimmerman Park Steak Fry. The Service of Silence and a salute to the flag on the Mall were next in the school closing activities. 23 26-29 JUNE The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom were held in the Northern Hotel. Finals and goodbyes went hand in hand as the RMC doors began to close. There followed Baccalaureate and Commencement. The happy beginning and the unhappy end for the RMC Seniors. Words of wisdom were given and diplomas were awarded on the Mall. The happy schoolday memories, which were produced by another year of classes and parties, dances and studies, were mingled with anticipations of an unchartered future. n n b g n n j Archie Cochrane Motors Empire Motors, Inc.
