There was a fine display of sportsmanship throughout the season. The team always returned with a smile and a determination to do better in the next game. The Alphas earned first place on Stunt Night, in the Shakespearean Declamation Contest, the Book Review Contest, and in debate. They won second place in the vocal and instrumental music contests, the Reading Contest and in the Spelling Bee. The Alphas sponsored the annual lawn party, and were co-sponsors with the Eagles of the mid-winter Formal Dance. Several Alphas were members of the Girls' Basketball team. Others took active parts in music, drama, debate and journalism. The Alpha Literary Society was organized twenty-eight years ago. Its purpose is the development of leadership and the encouragement of self-expression. Re- sults of ths program have shown in the monthly Inter-society Contests. The Kappa Chi was the first of the societies on the campus to secure its charter this year. Guest speakers have helped put on interesting programs. Each quarter a definite theme was undertaken, and the programs have centered around these ideas. At the conclusion of the football season, the Kappa Chis and Pioneers sponsored a formal dance following a banquet honoring the football team. The Co-ed Ball, an annual formal dance, proved again to be one of the most successful affairs of the year. Throughout the year, the society has met at various times with their brother society, the Pioneers, and exchanged informal parties with them.
