M' nglislz e artment The English Department is the key stone of our academic curriculum. Highly qualified instructors teach the student the importance of precise ex- pression of ideas. Through the study of prose and poetry the student acquires a greater knowledge of literature. The English curriculum includes aver- age classes for students with normal ability, modified courses for slower learn- ers, and advanced courses in creative writing, journalism, and exposition for superior students. English 3200 is a spe- cial course in which each student works at his own rate. Developmental Reading students use individual reading ma- chines to learn to read faster with greater comprehension.

Mrs. Hayworth makes use of the modern language lab. anguage apartment The modern language curriculum of Rocky Mount Senior High includes four years of French and Span- ish. Besides learning the language, students study the culture of the people who speak it. Latin ll students study the great Roman Empire by reading Latin stories and Caesar's Gallic Wars. With the increased emphasis on the spoken lan- guage, the French and Spanish students of Senior High find the language laboratory an invaluable asset. Self-conscious students may feel at ease with their teacher in the lab, while advanced students may use its facilities to develop their abilities more rapidly. 23
