Graduates ot the past will doubtless be pleasantly surprised at what they see when they visit the new campus, with its modern and beauti- ful buildings. Students ot the present are now enjoying the use ot these facilities, and students of the future are eagerly awaiting the day when they may claim this plant as their school, It has been a pleasure for the school administration and the School Board ot Rocky Mount to plan tor and provide the buildings which comprise this beautiful plant, and it is our hope that all who come this way will enjoy them to the fullest. D. S. Johnson, Superintendent MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, PLEASE . l hope this book will serve tor many a year to arouse pleasant memories ot the lite at Senior High. The Years spent here are so bound up with hopes and aspirations, joys and ambitions, that they will always stand out as among the happiest in your lives. This l-li-NocfAr is a visible symbol of these years, and as such will play its part in many a hoppy hour of recol- lection To all of you who are included within these pages, and especially to those of you who are graduating from Senior l-ligh this year, l wish good fortune and happiness from your alma mater' C M Edson, Principal 20 Uur Admin Many are the duties performed by l i Mrs. Bessie Carr whose official title is Secretary to the Principal. Whether it be schedule changes, collecting tees, filling in college applications or transcripts she keeps the office going with her usual skill and efficiency. No matter how rushed she is, her keen sense of humor never fails. ln addition to the numerous per- sonal problems that daily confront Miss Kate Parks Kitchin in her capacity of Guidance Counselor, there are many instances of other natures to be met. These include guiding students in preparation for employ- ment, aiding college bound seniors with admission procedures and helping them obtain scholarships. ln every phase of activity she is the epitome of poise, courtesy and tact . . . o gracious lady. i i '19 '?' istrative leaders Guide and Direct Us SUPERINTENDENT'S STAFF Upon the shoulders of Miss Glenda Overman, Mrs. Ann Spruce, and Mrs. Frances Speight rests the responsibility of keeping track of the records and personnel of eleven schools that comprise the Rocky Mount City System. OFFICE ASSISTANTS Since the principal's office is the heart, generally speaking, of all activities of the school, it is necessary to have a group of student assistants to help keep things running smoothly. The i954-55 big wheels ifrom left to rightl are Pat Edwards, Linda Joyner, Jeanette Mclntyre, Jean Root, and Clara Ann Gilbert. SCHOOL BOARD The Board of Education of the Rocky Mount School District is composed of civic minded citizens working for the betterment of the young people. They bind the ties between the school, the community, and industry. Our board consists of Mrs. T. R. Easterling, Mr. D. S. Johnson, Mrs. Julian Whitehurst, Mr. William Coleman, Mr. G, S, Edwards, Mr. Guy Barnes, Mr. Frank Wilkinson, Mr. J. R. Wells, Mr. Myers Ivey, and Mr. L, B. Edwards. Behind the scenes of every organization are those who help make things run smoothly and efficiently. Senior High has such a group in its cafeteria staff, custodians, and engineer. Our high school students take it for granted that their school will be spotless, warm and comfortable whenever they enter it, Every- day they pile into the cafeteria eagerly, for they know good wholesome food will be waiting for them there, The reason for this positive attitude lies in the fine service of the individuals pictured on these pages. Mrs. Proctor and her staff not only serve One couldn't ask for more cooperative custodians than these. Walter Howard, Allene Howard and Dan Dixon. delicious meals to the students, but they are fre- quently called on to serve civic groups and organiza- tions, The custodians take care of our lawns, keep the buildings clean and are always pleasantly willing to help move pianos, furnish ladders and mops or open stuck lockers. We have to share our engineer, Mr, Shaw, with all the other schools, but he is always available in time of need, and takes great pride in keeping our plant in tip top condition, No school could ask for a finer group of workers than these of RMSHS. We salute them for their splendid service! Mrs. Boone seems to prefer Jello, but Mrs, Lucas says she'll take pineapple upside down cake any day! Mrs. Taylor is too busy stirring the sauce for the spaghetti to enter into the discussion! IQ' 1 ' xl -Qt? Aux s i 5 fgl,-fd, 1.- ' - :p g f 2-1 23 A First Row- MR, E, E. Nevertheless, we were determined ta make this last year the best ever, Nancy Newbold was President first semester and we decided for one of our projects to adopt and support Long Dong Soal, a little Korean orphan, We sent Long Dong a Christmas present and he sent us many letters and pictures of himself. In striving to fulfill this purpose the Student organization provides the student with the opportunity to participate democratically in shaping the policies of the school In the basic unit of the Student Organization-the homeroom fthe theory of democratic representation is established and training for leadership as begun Each homeroom sends two representatives to the Student Organization Representative Assembly The terms of those people are so arranged that one is always experienced, one, always in training In this way every .f qty! student is directly represented and actually participates in the work of the Organization. The second unit of the Student Organization is that of the class Organization Officers elected by direct vote of all class members, lead this unit in working out plans and procedures for class proiects and activities. The president of each class sits with the representatives from the homerooms in his class in the Student Representative Assembly. The third unit is that of the General Student Organization. Including the other two units, it is probably the most important and is the only all-inclusive Organtzation in our high school. The officers are elected by direct vote of all the students. The chairmen of committees are appointed by the President with the approval of the Representative Assembly. The officers, chairmen, STUDENT ORGANIZATION OFFICERS President, Sandy Thorpe, Vice President, Bobby Wimberley, Secretary, Erwin Robbins, Treasurer, Jane Hatchett. This cabinet ordinarily serves as an Advisory Board, but assumes Judicial Powers in case of constitutional dispute. lt is through this Organization 1 acting only with the authority delegated by the Principal and in close association with the Advisor-that problems are discussed, projects carried out, and policies shaped that will benefit the majority of the students. We are proud of our Student Organization, We feel that through it, democracy is at work in our school, students are learning to practice the democratic procedures that make up our American Democracy. Through its affiliation with the District and State Congress, and with the National Association it is reach- ing out to join hands with other American youth to build a democratic concept and a practical unity that will continue to function in the lives of individuals and in the life of the nation!
