Norman Johnson, lwsolf of i- 'i 45 i i vii .3 er ACC4:.'iIl'l.lSllMl'lN'l'S At the lic-ginnin,e' ol' the fall semester the Seniors undertook a projett to raise money fir thc- gilt which they plan to leave the school. As their project the Seniors adopted the sale of Christinas cards and stationery. Through the cooperation of the officers, teachers and memhers of the class 8256.81 was raised. Mary Alice Trevathan was top salesman: Miss Hirkhead's and Mrs. VanBuskirk's home rooms were tops in the home room fields, and Bolmhy Gorham, Thomas Pierce, Bruce Henry, Dee Wilkinson, Peggy Hedeepcth, Betty Sutton, Ruth Wiggins, Jo Ann O'Donnell and Margaret Frazier won honoralile mention. Near the end of the semester the Seniors liegan taking' the Kuder Test to help them in their vocational choices. With the start of the Second Semester the Seniors lregran a series of class meetings on the prohleins 1ll'lH211'l'l2lj.f6 and family life. Dr. K. Weeks spoke on the physical side of marriage: Reverend C. C. Camplwell, pastor of the First Christian Church, approached the subject from the spiritual angle, and the climax of the series came with the visit of Dr. Leland Wood, outstanding authority on Human Rela- tions. The series was well received hy the class. Near the end of school a number of committees were at work, planning for the various Commencement activities. Miss Alexander graciously consented to di- rect the Senior Play, Love Is too Much Trouble, and a packed house witnessed this hilarious comedy of college life. May 24 found the class having' the time of their lives on 'Senior Day. For the first time since the institution of this special event, a full day's prog'ram was planned heginning with a spe- cial hreakfast at the Ricks Hotel, continuing with a talent program in the auditorium, and climaxed hy ai weiner roast given lvy the P. T. S. A., followed hy a movie as ,quests of the Center Theater. After a full and happy year the Seniors look forward to 'tGraduation 1950 as a splendid climax tu their high school careers. These officers worked diligently in their efforts to raise the money. Through the cooperation of the Curtiss Publishing' Company, the members of the Junior Class sold magazines and netted a substantial sum. The spring term of school brought in another competent slate of officers. The problem c infront- ing' this group was the task of planning' the best Junior-Senior Prom ever. This being: the main social event of the school year, they worked long and hard in planning and executing the idea for the dance. The theme, Evening in Paris, was effectively carried out in attractive decorations. The music uf tlie Statesmen, coronation of the May Queen, and the atmosphere uf' the whole affair made thc guests feel as if they had enjoyed a wee bit of Gay Pareef' cmckvz 66444 Officma SPRING SEHIESTER Betsy Carr, Secretary Barbara Fulgham, Tl'4'I1SHI'f'l' Nancy Bartholomew, Vice I'n'sidw11f Miss flraighill, Advisor John Page, Ivvsiflmzf mama 50 PATSY ABERNATHY RALPH ADAMS WILLIAM ADAMS BETSY ALLEN SHIRLEY .ANDERSON MILDRED ANDREWS CLAUDETTE ARCHIE BRUCE BATCHELOR MARY ELIZABETH BAKER ANNE BAILEY NANCY BARTIIOLOMEW A NORMAN BARTIIOLOMEW - A TOMMY BASS JOE BEARD DORIS BLANDFORD JACK BLOODWORTH ANNE BLUNT MARGARET BOONE MONROE BRINSON BOB BRITT DOROTHY BROCK RICHARD BROCK ALAN BROWN ANN BULLUCK BILLY CALHOUN CECIL CAPPS LODOSKIA CARMICHA BOBBY CARPENTER BETSY CARR BRUCE CARR JIMMY CARTER JIMMY CARTER BOBBY CHANDLER KATHERINE COLLINS DOROTHY COMBS BOBBY CRAFT THE 1950 HI-NOC-AR E L 17,172 dh 43 ' xxx , , X 1 1,7 .43 ,,- I' -Ax .L ' If - . Aol'0lllPl.lSHhlENTS Following the election of officers ofthe Sophomore Class in the early fall, plans were made to operate a concession stand at each of the hasketlmall games of the regular season. The first semester president hecame the general chairman of the Concession Committee. Two other memlrers of the class were appointed to act as assistants to the chairman. The committee was completed hy selecting two students from each of the sophomore rooms. Upon completion of the organization of the committee, they met and made a schedule of workers for each game. At the close of the lvasketlfall season the class had realized enough profit to meet the current hills, finance the annual Sophomore Party, and have some money left over for next year. After the election of the second semester officers, the class began plans on the highlight of the year, the annual Sophomore Party. The officers of the class met with the advisor and made tenta- tive committee and advisor appointments. At a later meeting' of all the committees and advisors plans were made for a lwarn dance with Tal Pollard. The plans were submitted to each home room for a vote of approval or rejection. They were approved and carried through to a successful completion. Better flllillgs for bcffcr Iiviilg flzrough Sfudcnf G1ll'l'l'll7IIf'IIfl' THE STUDENT ORGANIZATION The Student Organization provides every student an opportunity to participate democratically in the formulation of school policies, in the initiation of desirable school activities, and in the promo- tion of the day by day work and fun of school life. It seeks to develop within the student group a working' knowledge of the theory of Democracy, to increase self-direction, discipline, leadership, fellowship, co-operation, and in general, to maintain a great amount of school spirit. With its inclusive and positive purpose, it is therefore the unifying element of all school activities and as such can be no more effective than the individual student makes it. The Organization works on three levels with each level having its own complete organization. Level one is the General Organization with its four officers, its ten major or standing committees, and its assembly of representatives from the home rooms. Level two is the Class Organization. For each of four classes-freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior-there is an organization consisting of four officers, an adviser, and the necessary committees -all from the home rooms comprising the group. Level three is the Home Room Organization with its four officers, the home room teacher, and the desired committees. The purpose of Student Organization finds expression as leadership ami citizenship develop among students. It affords many students the greatest opportunity for the development of poise and personality as well as for the recognition of civic responsibility. The Student Organization should he the heart and core of student life. Such is its aim in the Rocky Mount High School. , Q il 6 Y c,,,.,..L - :av 0 , :V Y-A' m , L , rs 1 I e H' ' 1' U Q G ifagf Fifty THE 1950 H1-Noc-AR qv PRESIDENT'S CABINET STUDENT ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN FIRST ROW-Carroll Wiggins, Lost and Found: Phyllis Leggett, Board of Finance: Charles Wil- liams, President: Harry Pearsall, Assembly: Barbara Southall, Elections. Olaf-ln'1'for'n1s ull 1Iflll'I'Hn EDSONIAN DRAMATIU ORGANIZATION The founding of the Edsonian Dramatic Organization was the big event which occurred in Dra- matics during' the 1949-1950 year. At the beginning' of the school year in September there was much speculation as to the future of the Dramatics Department since Mr. Edson was now Principal and a new Dramatics teacher was coming. However, before the first month had passed Miss Sara Alexan- der, the new instructor, had proven herself to be tops and everybody was looking forward to another outstanding year in Draniatics. November found the Edsonians, as they were called in honor of Mr. Edson, presenting their first play, Song of My Heart. With its superb cast, efficient production staff, and fine director the play turned out to be a great succss and marked a swell beginning for the E.D.O. As Christmas was just around the corner by this time, it was decided to present Dickens' Christmas Carol. For the major production of the year the play, Angel Street, was selected and when the final performance was presented on February 18, the future of the E.D.O. was firmly established. Immediately following this, preparation for the State Drama Festival began. After many long' weeks of ardous labor the Edso- nians departed for Chapel Hill full of spirit and hope. When the Festival was over it was learned that the E.D.O. had ZVOII just about all that could be icon. .-ff? All of the art work in the 1950 annual bears testimony to Lawrenc'e's talent, also. He has served well in two very important capacities. Sheila Robbins and Dot Whitley were runners-up. This contest which is spon- sored annually by the 'Blackbird Staff, was begun several years ago and has rapidly grown in popularity. This year great interest was shown in the voting. The contest ran from November 17-23. During this time posters were placed all over the school, and students were beseiged daily with requests for pennies for votes. A total of 17,500 votes were east. The money raised will be used to aid in financing The Blackbird. PROFILE OF YOUTH Rocky Mount High School was signally honored by having one of its students chosen to be featured in the April issue of The Ladies Home Journal in the Profile of Youth Series. Joanne Holt, popular senior, was our candidate for this Teen-Age feature. As a result of her selection, Joanne put R.M.H.S. in the limelight. Voted the Most Talented girl in the Senior Class, Joanne won new laurels at Chapel Hill when she was awarded a Scholarship to the Burnsville Summer Theater for being the outstanding actress at the Draniatics Festival. The runners-up for the title in this annual event sponsored by the Il.lI.H.S. Band, were Nancy Williams and Barbara Fuller. All three girls were driven on to the field in a beautiful 1949 Pontiac Con- vertible. The Band stood in a heart formation around the car playing Sweethearts as Blanche was announced winner and presented with a huge bouquet of yellow chrysanthe- mums. The event climaxed a week uf nominating and vot- ing' of the students for top ranking Junior and Senior girls. Vfryr Eifflffif Tlirm' 'S- n emuriam And how do you remember Mr. Wilson? Do you think of the man himself as you saw him countless times? The rather slight, trim figure walking with quick, alert step-the keen brown eyes that could sparkle with humor or flash with determination-the way he ducked his head when he said Good morning -the inflection of his voice-the delib- erate, decisive manner in matters of importance-his abounding energy -his democratic attitude-his love of simple things-his dislike of pre- tense-and his all-consuming interest in everything and everybody- the warm friendship he extended to every student who came to him- his words of encouragement and strength-his wisdom-kncwledge -his character-Mr. Wilson-the man. Or do you remember him as R. Nl. Wilson-schoolman? A man who gave thirty-eight years of his life to the youth of Rocky Mount, serving in many capacities: as athletic coach, principal and then, for thirty-five years, as superintendent. And during those thirty-eight years what tremendous educational growth he witnessed! From a sys- tem composed of three grammar schools and two high schools, he lived to see Rocky Mount recognized as having one of the outstanding pro- gressive school systems of the State with eight grammar schools located in strategic sections of the city and two new high school buildings to replace the outgrown ones. And what a change in the curriculum, from the traditional readin', 'ritin' and 'rithmetic and the more con- ventional others to courses in music, dramatics, journalism, commercial subjects, vocational education and shop wcrk. Who can estimate the number of hours he spent traveling over North Carolina to educational meetings-ever eager to learn new methods, to keep abreast of the times and to be sure his students were receiving the best instructions possible. Or is it as a civic leader that you remember him? The Kiwanian who faithfully served on many committees for the betterment of com- munity life. The man who was always ready to speak in behalf of a good cause, actively interested in the work of the Boy Scouts. His name always appeared on the list of leaders for the Community Chest Cam- paign, the Red Cross Drive and the Christmas Seal campaign. Wher- ever he was needed, he served. Whenever he was called, he answered. Whatever he could do for his fellowman, he did. Perhaps you think of him as a loyal churchman, for well he de- serves this title. He served as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church from 1915-1919. In 1919 he was ordained as an elder, and in 1930 he was elected to the position of Superintendent of the Sunday S-chocl-an office he held until his death. Regardless of which picture you cherish the most-or whether you remember all the many aspects of Mr. Wilson's character, each of us has a definite image of him in our mind-a special place dedicated to him in our heart. All of us in R. M. H. S.-faculty, students and other personnel-will always be grateful for the privilege of knowing Mr. Wilson, of working with him, of serving him. For, in the words of the Rev. Norman Johnson: His reverence, his earnestness, his faithful- ness, his loyalty to God and his fellowmen endeared him to many. The memory of such a life is inspiring. The influence of such a life is abid- ing. The work of such a life is eternal.
