In this, the 1949 Hi-Noc-Ar, we present our world, Rocky Mount High School, and its production The Best Year of Our Lives , in which we, the students, play many parts. VVe are the stars, the supporting players and the understudies. Just as a professional play depends upon minute details, and countless unnamed persons for success, so does our school need the help of every single member of its cast for a smooth production. No one is unimportant, no one is all-important, for every- one has a role. There are those who direct, those who perform and those who are content to work behind scenes without special recognition. Ours is a stupendous production with a cast of over 750 working together for a smash hit! The pages of this volume. then, are a reflection of our life during 1948-49 The Best Year of Our Lives . The problem etinfront- ing' this group was the task of planning the best Junior-Senior Prom ever. This being the main social event of the school year, they worked long and hard in planning and executing the idea for the dance. The theme of the event was an oriental one. A beautifully decorated gym, featuring lanterns, a huge Buddali and ceremonial kites, a program highlited with oriental numbers, and delicious re- freshments made this Junior-Senior one of the best and one that will long be remembered. The orientation program efficiently organized to acquaint the newcomer with all phases of high school.life. This program lasts five weeks and includes a thorough study of the handbook, discussion of officers-their qualificatios and responsibilities-a tour of the building and introduction to teachers, explanation of the testing program, learning of school songs and yells, an assembly program featuring information gained through this program ,and as a grand climax, an enter- tainment party featuring delicious refreshments. The class elected its officers at the beginning of second semester and chose as their leaders for the year Gene Williams, Peggy Ward, Ann Stevens, and James Womble. The year was officially ended with the Freshman Frolic which featured square dancing as well as round dancing and offered the music of the Rocky Mountaineers and the High School Orchestra. Talmadge Pollard called the figures. The high school choir sang several selections, and a tap dance, quartet, and community sing featured the program. Much of the success of the occassion was due to the various committees who worked so faithfully under the leadership of the following chairman: Kay Finch, decoration committee: Julia Harrell, refreshmentsg Albert Rabil and Carolyn Ellis, program: Betty Ann Talton, invitations: Neil Williams, music: Tommy Avent, clean-up. The Student Organization offers every student in the school an opportunity to be represented in the student affairs of the school, and even to have a voice in shaping the policies of the school. It can, there- fore, be no stronger and no more effective than the individual student makes it. The Organization works on three levels with each level having its own complete organization. Level one is the General Organization with its four officers, its ten major or standing committees, and its assembly of representatives from the, homerooms. Level two is the Class Organization. For each of four groups-freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior-there is an organization consisting of four officers, an adviser, and the necessary committees- all from the homerooms comprising the group. Level three is the Homeroom Organization with its four officers, the homeroom teacher, and the desired committees. Many of the activities which bring greatest pleasure- into the lives of the students and offer the greatest opportunity for the development of poise and personality as well as for the recognition of civic responsibility are sponsored and financed directly by the Student Organization or encouraged indirectly by its leaders. The Student Organization should he the heart and core of Student Life. Such is its aim in the Rocky Mount High School. There is something about the snap and precision of those black and gold clad ranks and the flash of the drum-majo1'ette's baton that seems to fan the spark of school spirit in every student whether they appear on the football held or the assembly stage. In addition to its inspirational talents, the band is also a fine musical organization. lfnder the direction of Mr. Harold T. Parry the members get a chance to display their talents at their annual spring concert. The band sponsors the Campus Sweetheart contest. entertains us during football season and at Christmas time, and gives us good publicity by representing the school in local and statewide parades. Pat, and Carrie Belle seem ti be helping' Roliin tu pick out the latest fasliiens. They'll have to get down to hard wark in a minute. 3:05 What would the seniors do without the Senior Steps-the tradition of the high school? Be- fore school, at lunch, and after sch 'ol this is the meeting place for the lucky seniors. The underelass- men have to be content with just looking forward to the time when they can go on the Senior Steps. 3:15 Every school has its Sfda Shop-a place which is quite dull during scliool hours, but a place that comes alive with the noise and activity of students soon after the last scliool hell has rung. Here Robin, Billie Jean, and Lucy Ann are enjoying a Coke before going' to work or to the Teen-Age Club. At R. M. H. S. 23:30 llow many hours per student, per week, are spent at the Ten-Age Club? Nancy, Ilohin, Joyce, Iloril, and Betty Jean are talking to the boys and wetting' a little sunshine he-fore going' down to dance, play 1-ards. vheulsers, or ping'-pong, or just talk. 5:30 How about a date tonight? I just found 4 ut I uould get a ride ol' I would have called sooner. Billy is u Symbol uf the mad st-ramble for dates on Friday niirhts. After all, Friday would lose some of its meaning' if there were no dating' going on. 10.310 Uh, a milk-shake at the Dairy Bar hefore finishing oI'1' 11 wonderful evening. Robin and Billy li-ull so happy together! The Dairy Bar has hecnnw zi part ni' the lives ol' the students at RNIHS. 11:15 Nancy is spending the night with Robin so she helps roll up her hair. No doubt they are discussing what a wonderful day it has been. This contest which is sponsored by the Blackbird staff was begun last year and has rapidly grown in popularity. This year student in- terst was aroused by attractive posters which decorated all the arcades, halls and classroms. Much credit is due to the campaign managers who worked diligently for their candidates. Donna received 4,369 votes to give her the title. Runners-up were Tamara Holliday, Sue Franks, Gloria Plummer, and Blanche lVilkins. who gathered the next amount of votes. The other candidates were: Faye Reynolds, Elaine Hardy, Billie Jean Owen, Jean Daven- port, and Lucy Ann Boddie. The money collected during the campaign was used to help pay the expenses of the Blackbird during: the remainder of the year and for im- provements for the paper. How much of each dollar industry takes in do ycu guess would be a fair profit for business to make? Some people guess profits run as high as 25 cents out of each dollar of sales. Most people guess that 10 to 15 cents would be a fair profit. But there's no need to guess. Government figures show industry averages less than half that much profit! And, don't forget, about half of what industry does make goes right back into business to help pay for the development and expansion that bring more jobs and greater security for all. So, whenever you hear of a local firm making good -you know that's a good thing. For it means more jobs for folks in our town. 1525522 CII36i?li7tv11 .. cc7C7llZ.l Smxm' BuI,l'MIiN'l'HAI, N Co.. INC.
