What can I do, asked he, To make this world a better place? What must I do, What must I be? How must I run to win the race? To find the answers, study well Not just the poet's and authors' findings Of unknown mysteries into which they delved, Mysterious sciences still unshining. Man's destiny is built on things More material than other manls deeds. Knowledge, character, acts of kings Who sense the problems of human needs. Ambition will make tomorrow's world, Responsibility will plant the seed Of courage whose banners unfurled The cries of the meek must always heed. H1-Noe-AR Page Thwfu Thru PRL 71 'HEC l ' As a writ.r of mystery stories I have met more than my share of odd characters --liulh on paper and in real life: my experiences have bten unusual to say the least, but recently I happened upon such an eccentric charaet.r and as a result had such an entertaining evening that l decided to cast aside my cloak of anonyniniity, and let you readers share my experience. You know me by my pen name, llflallory King, but I was horn plain Bobby Williams, and graduated in the Class of '47 in lt. M ll. S. It wason a blustry March day that I told my wife, known to you as Angerlane Whitfield concert pianist, who was busily practicing for her approaching tour, that I was going for a little walk around our domain. Needing absolute quietude for our professions we had bought a small island off the Varolina Coast seting in it the sanctuary we needed Ho much. The real estate agent had assured us that the island was uninhabited-at least to his knowledgeg so upon tirst sight we bought it! I was strolling along the beach on this. particlar day, and coming upon a seemingly deserted Coast Guard Station, I decided to investigate. I had taken only a step or two up the winding stairs when I was surprised by a quiet voice from above. And just what are you doing in my house may I ask? I looked up and found myself gazing into keen brown eyes staring at me with an intense ferocity. I was told that no one lived here. I replied. I'm sorry I intruded. My name is Bobby Williams and- Ah-Bobby Williams---that name has a familiar sound. Vould it be that you graduated from Rocky Mount High School? I did. I answered eagerly, Class of '4T. Then can it be that you don't remember me? Look closely. And with that invitation he limped painfully down the stairs. I watched him come toward me. and I tried desperately to recall the younger verison of this man. Suddenly I had it! Journalism-The Blackbird-Karl tDeath Takes a Holiday, Basil Rathbone, Vasa- noval Rose! Karl, I exclaimed, What a wonderful surprise! Come with me, Bobby, he urged. I shall show you the most miraculous invention of the century. I have needed someone to share this with, but I am shy, you know. and I hesitated to venture forth into the outside world It's been extremely lonely here since I lost my assistant, Jimmy Gray. Poor Jimmy- this hermit's. life finally got him. He was wandering around the swamp with me one day, when his last shred of reason snapped, 'I see her-I see her.' he suddenly shouted. 'It's Chloe-I've found Chloe. Gimmie a pencil, Karl. I've gotta get a statementf And before I could warn him he dashed after the elusive creature-and fell right into a pit of quick sand4and sank out of sight before I could save him. But enough of sadness-Come, take a seat here and I shall show you my miracle. Not being a scientist, I find myself incapable of adequately describing the machine before me. Suffice it to say that Rube Goldberg in his wildest dreams, could never have equaled this monstrosity. Never have I seen, before or since, such a collection of cables, tubes, lights and assorted metals. The main object was, however, an enormous screen which completely filled one end of the room. I sat down, rather dubiously, to await developments. I was rewarded instantly, for Karl continued with this machine I reproduce a scene from anywhere on the face of the earth. This knob controls the southern states: this, the western: and these, the central, the' northern, the eastern, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacilic, the stratosphere, etc! This indicator limits the scope to a single village or a house in that village. We'll now begin! And, my friends, I sat there amazed-stupefied, as Professor Rose turned dials that carried me all over the world where I saw former classmates. I know these almost unbelievable things are true for I saw them! Billy Deans has, realized his life ambition, water boy for a professional football team.
