BESSIE CARR MISS ELEANOR PEARSALL DEDICATIQN We, the Hi-Noe-ArSta1T, respectfully dedicate the 1944 Hi-Noc-Ar to Miss Eleanor Pearsall, Librarian, and Mrs. Bessie Carr, Secretary. These are the unsung heroes of the Rocky Mount Hil' School, whose services have consistently been above the line of duty. Long after we have closed our text-books and gone through the halls for the last time. we will remember these two, Miss Pearsall is prized by all the students for the fluency of Latin and French translations, her knowledge of books and authors, and her accurate memory of history dates. She has tutored and helped pass us all. Mrs. Carr is always ready to do mo1'e than is required of her. Eagerly and willingly she works for the benefit of the students. Those of rs who have found it necessary to go to the office ffor one thing or another! have found her pleasant smile and dheerful disposition a perfect gloom chaser. And so, with sincere admiration for their accomplishments, and a heart full of love for them as individuals, we humbly dedicate this, the 19-14 Hi-Noc-Ar. TEAM Although the Birds only came in third in the conference standings, their season still carries the title of being successful, due to the fact that in all games during the season they won six contests, lost three, and tied only one. A tie with their hated rivals, the Wilson Cyclones, was the greatest honor that the team gained in 1943. At the first of the year the Blackbirds were picked to end up no better than fourth, but they managed to surprise most of the local football cnthusists with some very good football. George Kessler was chosen to play in the Shrine All-Star game which was played in Charlotte. Kessler, the leading North Carolina player of the game, was given the honor of calling both the offensive and defensive signals for his outfit. Rocky Mount's team got off to a good start in the first game when they plowed through Kinston by the score of 26-7. In this game the Birds looked very good with their offensive scoring. The Blackbirds met their Iirst defeat when they lost to the powerful Greensboro team by the score of 19-13. In this game Rocky Mount could not get their scoring machine into action, and it was not until the second half that they came to life and almost nosed out the Whirlwinds. The team immediatelyjumped back into the win column the next week with an over- whelming victory over a weak Goldsboro team, which was only able' to score two points against the Bird's 46. The Birds were not so fortunate when they played the Wilmington outfit: the score was 12-12. In this game the Rocky Mount team was much the better team but had four scores brought back on account of penaltiesg they were really lucky to escape with a tie. The local team won another contest when they downed the Fayetteville Bulldogs in a hard fought battle 13-6. In this see-saw affair the Bulldogs jumped into the lead early in the game, but by the end of the half the Birds had gained the upper hand. When the Rocky Mount team played host to the Wilson Cyclones in a non-conference game, it was really a grand success for the local team. They took the upper hand and outclassed their rivals for a 19-6 decision. Durham then rode into town and gave the Birds one of their hardest fights before going down to defeat 19-13. The following week a game was played in Oxford with the Blackbirds eking out a close 6-0 decision in a sea of mud. This game however started the downfall of the Caruso coached boys, for the next week they played their worst game of the season and were completely outclassed by Wilson in a score of 14-0. This was the first game that the Birds were unable to score and also the first contest in which they were not able to hold the ballg they comitted four fumbles and recovered none. Following this defeat, the Blackbirds again hit the right road and played their best game of the season. They gave the good Raleigh team a terrible scare before dropp- ing the game 11-0. In the ten games that the local outfit played during the year, they rolled over the ground for a total of 15-L points or an average of 15.4 points per game. 'They were held scoreless only twice and these came at the end of the season when they had hit their decline. The defense of the local club was also good, as the players held their opponents to only 90 points in the ten games, giving these teams an average of only nine markers a game. Scoring for the Birds was divided between two players for the most part: Pat Patterson lead the parade with a total of 48 points, while Jimmy Landis followed close behind him with 36 points. Third place went to Leo McDuffie who scored 25 points: Bo Carpenter took the fourth spot with 19 points. Main offensive power came from the arm of Bo Carpenter and the pass receiving of Jimmy Landis and Co-Captain Pat Patterson. The defense came mostly from the middle of the line with Dan Wheeless, Fred Augst, Co-Captain George Kessler, and .Timmy Landis being the bulwarks. 4 1x . uf, JV JJ -4, ,mil W5 , .xfgv , ..,-1, 4 ff ,, z,. HISTORY OF THE SENICR CLASS He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not is a freshman. That first day we were scared to death-all those new people. all those stairwaysl! Would we ever learn? Boy did those seniors burn us up, walking around calling us Fresh ! However we soon began to feel right at home and elected Betsy Bulluck as our first semester class president. Jean Griffin served as our leader during the second semester. We returned to dear old Central High for the '40-'41, and were into severything! Members of our class were tapped into the Jr. National Honor Society, taken into the Jr. Hi-Y, and members of the G. A. A. William Thorp was elected president of Jr. High School, while Betsy Bulluck was our second semester president. She brought honor to our class by winning first place in the District Piano Contest. In the tenth grade many things happened! One of our classmates, W. T. Smith, was honored in a statewide event, having three of his oil paintings displayed in the Annual Exhibition of North Carolina Artists held in Raleigh. Joe Purvis was our class president and he proved worthy of the position. We really worked hard during the year '42-'43. Under the leadership of Billy Sexton, our first semester president, we sold magazine subscriptions to make enough money to give our seniors the most scrumptous Jr. Sr. ever. Tommy Vestal sold the most subscrip- tions and was awarded a beautiful watch. Tommy was our next semester president, and under him we Juniors gave' the Seniors a dance they will long remember. fWe hopelj The theme of spring was carried out with decorations in pastel shades and spring flowers. Garden furniture was placed against a background of long leaf pine and spring flowers, and the bandstand, where Hal Thurston and 'his orchestra played, was in the form of a summer garden. fPretty swell, wasn't it?J Then came the year '43-'44 and we were Seniors! fSay, listen you fresh thing, get off the Senior stepslj Really, this was quite a class. Jean Griffin was elected president of the North Carolina State Students Council, while Betsy Bulluck was elected District President. Many of our Senior boys left during the year to serve under Uncle Sam, and we had to accustom ourselves to the scarcity of older boys. Thorughout the year the sale of War Stamps and Bonds in the Hight School was in full swing, and each of us tried to see how many War Stamps we could buy each week. Our choir under the direction of Mir. Parry, presented Blackout on Leave , a blackface musical comedy. It was really a howling success! Moe-errhh-Patsy Baily, our class president, was one of the more prominent blackouts . Then as spring came on, the tempo increased, and we began to realize more fully the significance of being a Senior. Again there was a lovely Jr.-Sr. prom, this time we were the guests. Then there was the highly successful Senior play, Pride and Prejudice ', this was a never-to-be forgotten night. And as the first da5s of June rolled around, we achieved the goal of twelve long years, a cap and gown, a diploma, a graduate'! Page If zrty One PROPHECY - 1054 Dear Class of '-14.
