ftilass ilaistnrp N looking over the commentaries oi the Class of 19235 of the Rocky Mount High Sehool, one is forced to admit that we are :L elass worthv of more than ordinary eonsideration. lt is true that when we first ggatlieretl, one hundred and eighteen strong, at old C. R. I., we were not. allowed to enter by the front entranee, but by the side door, into this temple of learning. This :lid not lessen our feeling of importanee, however, for were weI1otl reslnneu, and, therefore, a very necessary part of the school and eommunity'f We were more than gladly welcomed by the Sophomores, who had that extremely eontagegiousdisease, hazing, lint we sulfered our initiation as only true martyrs to the eause of edueation eau, and remained models for those that are and to ben. Our presenee in this institution demanded the personal attention of the prineipal. We created a perfectly humane neeessity for military drill twhieli was sometilres indulged in after sehooli, and a, few of us almost became non-eommissioned otiieers. All due congratulations for this aeeomplislnnent, are tendered to Mr. Mosely. It was during this year also, a very important one of the school and oi the class of 1923, that student government was tried for the first time: but because of the laek of a feeling of responsi- liility oi' our fellow-students, it was ui successful. We realized the power in organized numbers: therefore our class organized, and ehose as its president one ol' its eapable and trusted members, Tom Pearsall. At the same time we selected as our flower, the Sweet Peat as eolors, Purple and White, and as motto, RQ, one which has beeome as famous as G ive me liberty or give me death ! When we parted in June, we were all agreed to meet at the same place three months later to take up our burden for the betternzent. ol the world. At the appointed time, however, we were sadly laeking in numbers: and, too, our old prin- eipal was no longer with us. We missed them all, Some of whom were toiling at home, and others ll regret to say! had been disillusioned over the poor grades whieh unkind tear-hers had infiieteil upon them. Not.withst:infling.r our deereased numbers, we were determined to Inake a name for the Class of '23, We rapidly began to assert our authority over the Freshmen, and even ventured to indulge in athleties. lint we were not very sueeessful in athleties that year, for, did we not have also to help get our school on the aeeredited list? Plaeh year our elassmates beeame a more select erowrl. As our number decreased we began to realize the value of true friendships. When our .Iunior year eame, we profited by evperienee and organized very early, That, year we eleetecl James Kyser president, with an entirely new staff of officers. Along with our extreme intelliat-nee we were very patriotie, even defying the Ugods' ' fthe faeultyi and eourting the wrathful displeasure of the Seniors of that year by planning.: a walk- out' ' for .Xrmistiee Day. But to have remained at sehool on November 11, 1922, wouhl have been treason to our eountry. We had petitioned, we had remonstrateil: we lrad snpplieatecl-l'7ut all in vain. The ears of the autihorities were turned to stone. But how eould they understand the nol'-le purpose oi :1 elass Snell as ours? Breakiag the stillness of that memorable day, a, great shout arose as boys and girls poured out of old lidgemont tnnder the restraining arms of Mr. Lohrl just at the hour when Peace had heen signed in IEIIN. On their faees was the look whirh their aneestors bore years before, the look whieh meant love of liberty. For was this not the celebration of Armistice Day? We expeetetl a rising vote of congratula- tions for our patriotism, but those interested will tind a full aeeount in almost any old paper. The time is too short to deserilie further our publieity, and, too, we are very modest and un- assuming. We have been plaeed in many a diflieult and harassing position upholding those worthy tradi- tions whieh our i-lass embodies, Any patriotie people tand we are patriotic-Jrespeet their flag, and desire others to do so. Imagine our surprise when, eoining to sehool one beautiful spring morning, we saw a flag floating merrily in the breeze, lt bore the eolors and year number of the elass of '22, Dire looks were flashed in the Junior Class, and vengeanee was sworn. In sei-reey, a purple and white flag with huge letters, '23, was made. Un the following.: night the pride of our hearts was raised, the old flag taken down, and the pole eoverecl with grease. Next clay orders eame from the otiiee that it was to be taken down. The Fire Department was called: all the sehool waited. When the flag was lowered a tight ensued, outelassing any other in the history of the sehool. home of the boys lSeniors, of eoursel were Uknoeked out, and several bore sears for weeks. We still have our tlae as a souvenir of tle battle. -:J 2 5 lf:-
