Being based on leadership and character, it is given in order to encourage them to fully develop their poten- tial talents and to reach out as leaders in fields of service and good citizenship. Tim Havens DAR Tim Havens This award is given to students in the senior classes of accredited public and private high schools in good standing with the state Board of Education. The student selected must be a citizen of the United States of America and have the qualifications of Leadership - have personality; self-control, and ability to assume responsibility; Dependability - have cooperation and courtesy; Patriotism - have unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation. Three seniors are elected by the senior class. From these three, one is chosen by the faculty. The winner is entered in the state contest. GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL Regina Lechaton Regina Lechaton attended the 1980 Governor’s School for the gifted at Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg. WHAT IS THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL? The Governor’s School is to help develop the talents of those who pass a high level of ability, achievement, and creative talent. HOW MANY A'l'TEND? Six hundred students are nominated, but only four hundred and twenty are selected from throughout the state to attend. HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? It lasts about one month during the summer. WHAT DO YOU DO WHILE YOU’RE THERE? Each person selects two major workshops, a special interest group, and recreational activity. There is a special program every night. The participants at the school also go on various field trips. Social events are also planned for the enjoyment of the student. 48 FFA AWARDS Tim Lafon, Barry Bradshaw, and Paul Looney made the All-Federation Degree Team. Rocky Gap placed 2nd in the Degree Team Contest on March 11, 1980. Sean Thomas won the Federation Public Speaking Contest on April 9, 1980, and on April 14, 1980, Sean also won the Appalachian Area Public Speaking Contest. He received a plaque and $20 for this accomplishment. Barry Bradshaw won an Area and a State FFA Proficiency Award.
