I DARE YOU AWARD Tammy Pennington, Herschel Blessing The contest is open to boys and girls in the senior classes of accredited public and private high schools in good standing with the State Boards of Education. The student selected as the school's DAR Good Citizen must be a citizen of the United States of America and have the qualifications of LEADERSHIP - which includes personality, self-control, ability to assume responsibility; DEPENDABILITY - which includes cooperation, courtesy, consideration of others; PATRIOTISM - which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation, to an outstanding degree. The senior class elected three seniors having these qualifications and from the three, the high school faculty selected one to be the school's “DAR Good Citizen.” The local Winner is entered in the state contest. Each year a book is presented to two students to encourage these students, and others in the years to come, to fully develop their potential talents and to reach out as leaders in fields of service and good citizenship. February 5, 1980 ROCKY GAP: Since the beginning of the current basketball season (November 30,1979) many words have been written about the above pictured team and their gym. In the pre-season standings, the Roanoke Times Sports Department selected this team to finish no higher than fourth in the Mountain Empire District right behind Auburn, Shawsville, and Independence: however, this team has burst many a bubble as they clicked off win after win. HOME AWAY The Auburn Eagles were electrocuted. 90-77 60-59 The Shawsville Shawnees were scalped. 83-70 65-61 The Independence Blue Devils were Beheaded. 89-64 62-55 The Fort Chiswell Pioneers were pickled. ????? 71-59 The Bland Rockets were rejected. 75-52 ????? The Fries Wildcats were wallopped. 92-58 51-37 The Mount Rogers Rockets were repelled. 96-50 88-57 On Friday, February 1, in Riner VA, home of the Auburn Eagles, this team captured the Mountain Empire District regular season championship and possess an unsurpassed record of 18-0. Coach Puckett's Eagles are talented, unselfish team members who utilize smart passing, constant team movement and a multitude of defenses which keeps the opponent constantly bewildered. The Eagles are led by Super-Center Kenny Klimaitis. playmaker Tony Brizendine, the fine inside power of Herschel Blessing, quick, defensive Rich Hankins and the alert, talented Mark Willis. Daily Telegraph Sports Writer Tom Wall had this to say after the Auburn game at Rocky Gap: Puckett’s birds acted like swarming, hungry, vicious buzzards as they defrocked, defeathered, dismantled, and totally, ruthlessly, dissected the Auburn birds as calmly and as professionally as a Bellevue surgeon. It's obvious to the spectator that this team is well-coached, well-organized, and well-disciplined. Currently, the Rocky Gap Eagles are ranked seventh in Timesland — the only Group A school in the top ten.
