Rogahi Rocky Gap High School Rocky Gap. Virginia Artistically—From splatter to spatter our teacher has taught us, the difference is art and art is the difference. These budding young artists as they look at their work—is this really Art? I thought Art was such work! WE’RE STILL GOING STRONG Athletically—Though not number one, we’re coming up fast as we dribble and dribble and dribble. The harder we play, the better we get, there’s strength in the effort, you know. Physically—You run and you jump, you work and you fuss. That's how it goes when Physical Fitness time comes. You continuously try but some day, you’ll see you’ll come out on top—at least in some way. Vocationally—No college, you say? Well, that's perfectly OK, because we offer a wide range of vocations. From our courses in Tazewell to our own little section, we cover the fields from farming to data processing. Musically—From squeaks, to distinguishable sound, to music, thus has our band progressed. With careful instruction and hours of practice, they can now play as never before. Academically—Something old, something new . , . Those French speaking whizzes will soon boggle our minds as they practice to speak— oh, what did you say?” Finally, that day has arrived, one for which parents and teenagers have awaited. Well, maybe not parents but certainly teenagers who shout greetings to their parents as they arrive home . . . ”oh, please may I borrow the car?” Written by Carol Sue Tiller And the Government class as it shouts—“VOTE FOR !” Have those Seniors ever been working so hard? WHAT IS THE GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL? The Governor's School is a special summer program for some select few in order that they might advance their knowledge in their preferred field. WHO MAY ATTEND? Any student may attend so long as he meets certain requirements. The major requirement is that you be talented or gifted in some way. This does not mean that only students with the highest averages may attend, but one may be talented in art, music, etc. Leadership and character are among the other things which are looked at. The guidance counselor chooses nominees. HOW LONG DOES IT LAST AND HOW MANY MAY ATTEND? Governor's School, separated into three Colleges, lasts for approximately one month. It normally starts sometime in June. Over 700 students are nominated statewide each year, but only 425 (approximately) are actually selected to attend. WHAT DO YOU DO WHILE THERE? While at the Governor's School, one studies two major subjects of your choice on a rotation basis. There are numerous programs and field trips provided as well as all room and board. There is some free time, but you are expected to participate in most of the provided activities. The best thing about the Governor's School is the friendly people. Former students who have attended Governor's School from Rocky Gap High School include Scott DeHart, Danny Neal, and Carol Sue Tiller. “I DARE YOU” AWARDS Douglas Hoosier The I Dare You award is a book presented annually to encourage students to fully develop their potential and talents and reach out as leaders in fields of service and good citizenship. Sherri Spence is the wealthy Mrs. Victoria Van Delf, and Gina Bowles is Minna, her maid. Tammy Clark plays Virginia Van Delf and not pictured is the fourth daughter-in-law Billie Keen as Petula Van Delf. The remaining scenes are from the play ACTING PECULIAR which is a play within a play involving three women (Gina Bowles, Barbara Brown, and Sherri Spence) and their eccentric play director (Angie Dillow) who has rather unusual ideas about how a play should be performed.
