Mrs. Jean Sands is the instructor of classes in this field and is sponsor of the Future Homemakers of America. The departmenthas just recently been remodel- ed and several new appliances have been added. The vocational agriculture department is one of the best equipped in the state. Mr. Mahlon Rudy teaches classes in agriculture and shop for boys who live on farms and are interested in farming as a career. Students in these classes are automatically members of the Future Farm- ers of America. They enter district and state contests each year and sponsor various service projects for the school and community. ROCKY GAP VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT DEDICATION D-E-D-I-C-A-T-I-O-N It is with sincerity, devotion, and gratitude that we, the ROGAHI Staff of 1960, dedicate this edition of the Yearbook to one who has served us efficiently, patiently and graciously as he always exhibits the virtues of sincere friendship, fulfilled the role of adviser when we were in need of courage and guidance, and labored to mold not only our minds but also our characters. No words of thanks and praise are too high to express the depth of our feeling for this great man who at one time or another, has given each one of us a helping hand in a time of need. Doug Millirons President of the Student Council Mr. Earle Crabtree Sponsor of the Student Council STUDENT COUNCIL The Rocky Gap High School Student Council had a very busy year, fulfilling the following objectives fortheyear: ljtohold regular and special meetings when the need arises; 2) to hold assemblies for the entire student body and to assist other clubs in sponsoring assemblies; 3) to sponsor monitors for the halls to control traffic at lunch and between classes and to receive guests to the school; 4) to handle disciplinary cases when asked to do so; 5) to promote projects to raise a budget of at least $50; 6) to attend the district meeting; 7) to attend the state meeting at Fredericksburg; 8) to sponsor dances for theS.C.A.;9) to help set up regulations concerning the number of clubs to which a student should belong and the number of offices a student should hold; 10) to help the school in any desirable way; and 11) to provide at least one entertainment for members of the Student Council. MONOGRAM CLUB The Monogram Club has completed the following projects this year: sold school jackets, pen- nants, megaphones, tissue shakers, miniature cowbells, and booster badges. The club also financed the buying of new cheerleader and basketball uniforms. Dances were held in the cafeteria after home ball games. The Monogram Club sponsored the first Homecoming dance. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA Chapter 1073 of the Future Business Lead- ers of America was organized at Rocky Gap High School in 1954. The organization is made up of students with business courses included in their curriculum. The club strives to increase and develop students' interests in business as a career. Members attend district and state meet- ings each year and sponsor other school activi- ties. Sponsor this year is Mr. Buddy Carroll. The following projects have been carried out by the FHA this year: Participation in the UNESCO gift coupon plan, making of garments for at least two unfortunate children in the school, observation of National FHA Week, promotion of safety at the school and home, sponsoring the annual Mother- Daughter Banquet, and sending delegates to the state FHA convention next spring at Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The name of the Rocky Gap Chapter of the FTA is Garland L. Updyke. The club is affiliated with the Virginia Education Association and the National Education Association and on the local with the Bland County (Va.) Education Associa- tion. The purpose of the club is as follows: To learn about the opportunities in teaching, to cultivate the qualities essential in a good teach- er, to study the lives of great teachers, and to further the development of student leadership and interest in teaching as a career. DRAMATICS CLUB The Dramatics Club of Rocky Gap High School is composed of thirteen members under the direction of Miss Faye Kidd. Members produce plays for local entertainment and work on school productions. The club also enters the one-act play contest in competition with other schools in the district and state. So far this year the Dramatics Club has produced a three act play-giving both a matinee and night performance. The club has also presented a program of Christmas readings and songs to the County Education Association meeting. Members also produced a one-act drama in district and state competition entitled Fog on the Valley. These books are valued at $420 and were purchased for use in all departments as well as the high school library. A large percentage of the last shipment were reference books to be used as supplementary material in the high school classes. Some of the best fiction books received were written by such authors as: Gartner, Montgomery, DeLeeuw, McGehee, Porter, Leonard, Coatsworth, and Churchill. 21 The Art Guild had a busy year. Their work in painting included tempera painting, charcoal painting, water coloring, and pencil painting. Other special projects were paper pottery, woodwork, clay molding, textile designing, soap carving, plaster of paris, paper mache, totem poles, book ends, scrapbooks, and yard decorations. Many aspects of painting are studied such as sketch, landscape, cubism, and modern art. Part of the course was spent studying various artists, their lives and works. This is just part of the ever-expanding curricula at Rocky Gap High to develop the while student and to appeal to the interests of everyone. Four students from Raymond High School located in southwest- ern Mississippi visited Rocky Gap High during the week of January 10 thru 16 in the first student exchange program ever to be held in this area on the secondary level. The first exchange students were selected on the basis of personality, Scholarship, neatness, appearance, citizenship, participation in school activities, and speaking ability. Selection was made by student nomination in the Mississippi school and final choice made by the faculty. While at Rocky Gap, the visiting students had an opportunity to take part in a special assembly program, attended classes, witnessed two Virginia District S basketball games, and judged in general high schools throughout Virginia by what they ex- perienced at Rocky Gap. They were special guests onWHIS- TV in Bluefield on the Jackie Oblinger Woman's Whirl Show. They were also escorted on sightseeing tours in this area.
