CLASSES As one walks into a school building for the first time he may not be conscious of the ladder of education he is about to climb. Approaching the ladder, his first step begins with the study of the fundamentals of education: reading, writing, and arithmetic. His steps slowly progress andin doing so they lose the beginner's shakiness. They become steadier and their imprints become deeper. Lingering on the eighth rung, he begins to realize a part of what lies before him. His footsteps lose all their unsureness and gain a feeling of security and hopefulness. The last four rungs of the ladder seem to count the most. The realization of what might become of one faltering steps bears on his mind and makes him work hard to keep his pace steady and sure. Standing on the last rung, he looks back on the ground around the ladder where he once stood twelve long years ago and sees the footprints of those approaching and of those who trod that same ladder many years ago. They were able to go over the last rung-likewise, must he. So he plunges over into a world unknown.
