BUILDING ROCKY GAP HIGH SCHOOL Rocky Gap, Virgina FOURTH EDITION A In honor of one who has been a loyal friend to every student; who, as principal, labored diligently for the plan- ning of the new school, and whose patience and wisdom have helped us realize the many opportunities of life, we extend this small token of thanks for the four years of service to Rocky Gap High School and the surrounding communities. We proudly dedicate this annual, the 1956 Rogahi, to our principal, MR. GARLAND L. UPDYKE. Dear Editor and Staff Members: Thank you for the opportunity of making a minor contribu- tion to your 1956 edition of The Rogahi. I should like to commend the students of Rocky Gap High School, the faculty and more especially the members of The Rogahi staff for your efficiency, enthusiasm, spirit of unity and the com - pleteness of your present and past publications. It has, in- deed, been a job well done. May you profit by your ex- perience. With best wishes to all, I am Very sincerely yours James O. Morehead, Division Superintendent Bland County Schools sope 6' BETTY J. BLESSING MRS. JEAN SANDS MRS. MABLE PRUITT CLASSES As one walks into a school building for the first time he may not be conscious of the ladder of education he is about to climb. Approaching the ladder, his first step begins with the study of the fundamentals of education: reading, writing, and arithmetic. His steps slowly progress andin doing so they lose the beginner's shakiness. They become steadier and their imprints become deeper. Lingering on the eighth rung, he begins to realize a part of what lies before him. His footsteps lose all their unsureness and gain a feeling of security and hopefulness. The last four rungs of the ladder seem to count the most. The realization of what might become of one faltering steps bears on his mind and makes him work hard to keep his pace steady and sure. Standing on the last rung, he looks back on the ground around the ladder where he once stood twelve long years ago and sees the footprints of those approaching and of those who trod that same ladder many years ago. They were able to go over the last rung-likewise, must he. So he plunges over into a world unknown. We are in- clined to lean upon our parents andteachers for support and therefore are pre- pared to take everyday problems and disappointments as they come without high spirits that we are being prepared for a higher education and introduced to a life filled with many great adventures and disappointments. One of our greatest ambitions is that we may have the ability to receive our disappoint- ments and failures in life calmly and bravely as of that in Elementary School. Those footprints have been left on athletic fields and gym floors throughout this section of the state. Many players of the past have gone on to fame at colleges and universities. We hope that our teams will follow their footprints to good sportsmanship and outstanding records. Front: Peggy Weddle, Lillian Radford, Shirley Stowers, Betty Lambert, Betty Burress. They develop initiative, leadership, traditions, and a sense of responsi- bility. It is through organizations that the students begin to plan their own path- ways and plant their own footprints with only a minimum amount of guidance from the school administration. We appreciate the opportunities to take part in many clubs and organizations at Rocky Gap High School.
