Q 52 eandsitfiee On March ZZ 1980, at 12:30 p.m., Mt. St. Helens in Washington showed her awesome beauty and destructive power. The volcano, dormant for years, erupted her murderous lava and caused the demise of all forms of life on the cone of the volcano and nearby towns. In outer space another form of awesome beauty was discovered. The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched on September 5, 1977, completed its billion-mile journey that took more than 3 years. Iran seized the U.S. Embassy in Iran and held 50 Americans hostage for tive months and seven days. On April 11, 1980, President Carter ordered a rescue mission to be sent to Iran. However, the mission was aborted because of mechanical malfunctions which resulted in the death of eight American soldiers. The hostages continued to be held as prisoners. November 4, 1980, marked the grim Hrst anniversary of the capture of the U.5. Embassy in Iran. That date was also Election Day. The presidential candidates were, for the Democratic Party, Mr. jimm y Carter, for the Republican Party, Mr. Ronald Reagan, and, for the independents, Mr. john Anderson. Mr. Reagan was victorious in 45, an incredible majority, of states, while Mr. Carter controlled five states. ' 'tes f3r 'Jl 'avfffni f . - . NEWS FLASH Kei? DI o C.......f, . One of the main campaign issues was inflation, since the past year had seen an increase in the price of everything from clothes, to food, to a college education. A pair of designer jeans, necessary to every chic student, cost about 535.00. Shoes were priced at about 525.00. I-'ood was also priced much higher. One loaf of bread cost 5 .89, and half a gallon of millc cost 51.06. Even fast food restaurants were affected by inflation, Big Macs cost 51.15. One price that rose because of a need to cut back on the use of a product was that of gasoline. A price of 51.36 per gallon certainly stopped wasteful use. Even a college education was becoming more difHcult to obtain because of the cost. The comm unity college cost an average of 52,800, state colleges charged approximately 53,600, and the pri va te college was priced at about 56,200. The year was, indeed, a memorable one.
