Though small in numbers as compared to other graduating classes it has many members ot outstanding tal- ent and ability. They have learned how to enjoy their worlcg that the pleasure ot accomplishment is the knowledge that they are serving well their fellow man. A famous educator once said the true education matriculates its pupils in the cradle and graduates them at the grave. Seniors of Rockwood Ioint High School have this philosophy they will go on learning that they may better serve humanity. We expect to hear good reports trom this class in tuture years. D Orin Prim: 18 Cfcm Maier? As we look back, it seems impossible that four, short, hectic years have passed since 55 of us were received into high school by the an- nual Freshman lnitiation. How young and frightened we were then! How new and strange were our surroundings! Then, as the years passed, the strange halls became familiar ones and our fright has long since disappeared. That first year as our project we sold Christ- mas cards, candy, vanilla, wrapping paper and salt and pepper shakers. As our main event that year we attended the party which the soph- omores held for us. As we returned the next year as soph- omores and looked forward hopefully to a suc- cessful year we found that only 46 of our for- mer classmates remained to initiate the new class of freshmen. That night we held a party for them at which they forgave us for tying them in crepe paper and dusting them with flour. We sold chocolate milk and ice cream as our project that year. Now, 42 of us had become juniors and we felt pretty proud of our achievements throughs out our three years of high school. Perhaps one of the happiest moments of that year was the day our Class rings arrived. How sparkly and shiny they were! l-low proudly we wore them! On january 28 and 29 we made our theatrical debut by presenting our lunior Class Play, Leave it to the Girls . During the year we sold candy and coke at basketball games. The really big event of that year to which we looked forward and prepared for months was the lun- ior-Senior Prom, which we held for the Seniors on May l. Finally, as a group of 33, we have come to the end of our long, eventful journey. On October 28 and 29, we made our last big ap- pearance on the stage by presenting our class play entitled, The Little Dog Laughed . This year we sold coke as our project and were kept very busy preparing the yearbook and making plans for graduation. This year was so full of memorable events. There was the lunior-Senior Prom, which every junior and senior long remembers, the class play and all the fun we had practicing for it. There was Class Night when all of us got to show our own special ability, and finally there were Baccalaureate and Commencement ser- vices. These days were both happy and sad. They were happy because we were now equipped and ready for our journey on that great road of life we were now to travel. They were sad because we were now leaving the place where we had worked and played, laughed and cried for four happy, unforgettable years in R. I. H. On September 3, 1952, sixty-live green, young students entered the doors ot R. l. H. S. to embark on a lourfyear term ol education. We were like any other group bashiul, green but willing to get along with everybody. Our initiation was given to us on September 25, 1952, by our upperclassmen, the Sophomores. Our project tor the year was the sale ot Christ' mas cards. lt was a short and exciting year. Cn September 8, 1953, we returned to school with only 45 members present. Our big events ot the year were the Freshman lnitiation Party, held on Qctober 2, 1953, and the Fresh- man-Sophomore Dance, held in the auditorium December 10, 1953. Cn April 29, 1954, our most successful event was held. lt was the Sample Fair which we held in the gymnasium. Returning to school on September 7, 1954, we find we are now juniors with only 49 ot our original 65 classmates remaining. Qur most exciting day was December 1, 1954, when our class rings arrived. The class play, the lunior- Senior Prom, and the Sample Fair were the most important class activities tor this year, S5219 0lf1'L0l 85 . When we entered Rockwood loint High School ds freshmen on September 8, 1953, we hod ci cldss enrollment of 72 members. The first few weeks we were frightened dnd felt thot we were dll olone in this greot wide world. Then, on October 2, 1953, we received our ini- tiation from the sophomores. Thot some eve- ning we were given cf pcfrty which wds held in the gym. After thot we no longer felt fright- ned ond dlone, but os though we redlly be- longed. Thot yeor we hod o two hour movie os our clgss proiect. As we returned to school on September 7, 1954, we found thot our cldss now contdined only 68 members. On September 24, 1954, we welcomed the freshmon clgss to R. 1. H. S. by giving them cr gruesome ond gooey initiotion. To otone for the bod time we hcrd given them we held C1 porty for the entire freshmon cldss on Qctober 1, 1954. This yedr GS our project we sold cdndy dt noontime. ONLY THREE TO GO The freshman class of l954 set a new rec- ord by having the largest freshman class ever to enter Rockwood loint High. There was a total membership of 84 pupils who were di- vided into three sections. As a project this year chocolate milk was sold. The sophomores surprised the freshmen with an initiation which they had been dread- ing ever since the opening of school this fall. Two weeks later they held an informal ball in the gymnasium at which all had a very good time. The freshmen will never forget how the upperclassmen helped them through their first tough year, and they thank them for being so kind. They have now completed one year in high school which leaves them with only three years to go. They only hope they will be as enjoyable as the first. 2 CCZWCJEJJ . . . Since its estabf lishment in l922, the school paper has pro- vided an opportunity for students to dis- play their journalistic abilities in writing, reporting, and editing. It has also pro' rnoted cooperation and better understand' ing between the faculty and the student body. Each year the Rohistat can be placed on file as a printed record of the events of the school year to be referred to later as a source for information or reminiscence. The Rohistat, received free of charge by the students, is financed by the Rocks wood Ioint School Board and advertisers. lt is published six times a year by a staff comprised entirely of students under the direction of a faculty advisor. The Rohistat staff hopes to make the paper even bigger and better in the come ing years. WHAT THE BASKETEERS DID DURING THE YEAR Front Row, let! to right-Pritts, DuPont, Kusch, Sunnei, Phillippi CHEERLEADERS Leskey, Coleqrove, Hay, Yaste, Hostetler. Kneeling-Mr. Ortmaii Left to Right-Vouaht, Dunbar, Young, Welsh, Brown. Although the losses outnumbered the wins for this years Mainliners, the team had a sea- son filled with many exciting games in which were displayed cooperation, good sportsman- ship, and the will to win. Mr. Ortman, who has coached the Main- hners since l948, helped the team overcome many obstacles this year. Whenever they lost a game, he inspiringly looked towards the coming ones with determination to win. Bill Hay, high scorer for the Mainliners this year, was the only letterman from the preced- ing season to return to the hardwood. This, in addition to the fact that no Mainliner stood over six feet tall, held back our scores when Rock- wood met keen competition in the Somerset County Class B League. Perhaps the most exciting game of the sea- son was the 37-36 win over the favored North- ern Huskies on the Rockwood court. Another exciting win came with the 53-49 defeat of Sal- isbury in which both teams were matched tor field goals, the Mainliners winning on all- important free throws. The iayvees, guided by Coach Tipton, made remarkable showings. Lacking both ex- perience and height, they defeated opponents when the odds were against them. Their most exciting wins were over Northern, Ligonier and Shade. With the holdovers from this year, both the Varsity and lunior Varsity have good prospects for the next season. we .sizuonk fgemda Dec. 3 Hyndman .. 39 at Rockwood Dec. 8 Rockwood .. 39 at Hyndman Dec. 14 Northern . . . 36 at Rockwood Dec. 20 Alumni .. .. 42 at Rockwood Ian. 4 Rockwood .... 43 at Meyersdale Ian. 17 Salisbury .... 49 at Rockwood Ian. ll Rockwood .... 51 at Northern . The crack of the bat, the throw ot the ball and the unipire's decision all this and more goes into the game of baseball. Last spring, Rockwood loint High School's baseball tearn compiled an excellent record of eight wins out of nine games. Under the leadership of Coaches Qrtnran cmd Tipton the Mainliners got off to a flying start by whipping Berlin 9-4. Then came a close game with Turkeyfoot, but the Mainliners came out on the good end and won by a close margin of one run. A fine show of sportsman- ship and co-operative team play brought vic- tories over Salisbury, Northern and Meyers- dale, both on the opponents field and on our own diamond. A forfeit game from Meyersdale and a heart-breaking defeat at Turkeyfoot ended the season for the Mainliner team. Team co-operation and spirit is what it takes to make a winning ball club and this team certainly had it. lt showed fine sports- manship and co-operation both on and off the field. Prospects for next year are good, but win or lose, the team will be well supported by the loyal fans of Rockwood Ioint High School. Following are the scores of last springs games. Carol Forbes, Senior Class Prophet. In this, the prophecy of the class of 1955, are written the dreams and hopes of the young people who are now on the threshold of life, ready to take those first steps on their own. I am the prophet, the seer, the interpreter of dreams. Into the future I shall gaze to interpret these plans and dreams of my classmates. I am surrounded by complete darkness. The room is silentg I am alone. A glow begins to light the darkness. An image is formed before my eyes. It is a large building, a hos- pital. Was somebody hurt? Why should a hospital be the first place to appear in the dreams of my classmates? I am inside now, walking down a long, shiny corridor. Sudden- ly, from a doorway, a familiar form steps out in front of me. She is dressed all in white and is carrying a tray. She must have an important position because she seems to be in charge of the other nurses. She turns around and I see her face. Why, it's Nancy Dunbar, one of my former classmates. She doesn't see me though. It seems as though I am invisible, for no one notices me. I follow Nancy down the corridor until I see a room filled with small children ly- ing on their beds of pain. In the room l see an- other white clad figure whom I recognize imme- diately. lt is Nancy Bittner who soothes the pain and quiets the fears of these youngsters. I notice the serene look on her face and I know that she is very happy here. As I continue my Walk I see a blond haired nurse holding a baby behind a plate glass win- dow. The baby is crying, but there is a smile on the face of the nurse whom I recognize as Emma Folk. Now I am passing the offices of the doctors who Work here. Wait! Who is that sitting behind that typewriter? Why it's Peggy Romesberg, and she is typing something as the doctor dictates. The phone rings and I hear a familiar voice answer it. It is that of Patricia Ringer. How well organized and efficient this scene looks! I-low lucky a doctor to have two such secretaries working for him! As I am about to leave the hospital I meet Pearl I-Iechler who is just coming to work. She is going to- ward the kitchen where she helps prepare the delicious meals which are enough in them- selves to make patients feel better. The glow fades now. The room is again dark, but there is a light feeling inside of me, for I know that some of the dreams of my class- mates have come true. What about the others? As I sit here wondering about them, the room again becomes light. It is a sound I hear this time. It is the sound of typewriters. Yes, I can see them now. I am in a big office building which is owned by a very prosperous accounting firm. I look around the room and, much to my surprise, I see Nancy Christner seated at one of the type- writers. She looks as though she is entirely absorbed in her work. Beside her sits Rose Hay. Goodness, how fast her fingers fly! Why that's Dorla Pritts over there by the file cabinet and who's that who just gave her that folder? lt's Dorothy Chaney, another of my former classmates. At the other end of the room I no- tice Arlene Goller. She is taking a letter in shorthand which is dictated by a tall, blond fellow. Wait! Can it be possible? Yes, it is Stan Sanner and that sign on his desk reads Vice-president . . . . jkede F8 MMP Who are those two girls sitting there at the switchboard? Let's see . . . I can see their faces now. That's Dorothy Vought who is putting the plug in the board and the girl with the ear- phones on is Shirley Merrill. That switchboard certainly keeps the girls busy. Suddenly, the vision is gone. It disappears as quickly as it comes, leaving an inky black- ness in its wake. How happy I am that my classmates are doing so well, but my mind can- not rest, for there are others who are not ac- counted for. I am aroused from my reverie by the sounds of many people walking and talking. Mingled with the sounds of people are the sounds of animals. As the room is again illum- ined, I can see the inside of the Pennsylvania Farm Show building. I am in the livestock divi- sion. A large crowd is assembled at one end of the room. I walk over to see what is the cen- ter of attraction. I ask one of the spectators and am informed that the photographers are taking pictures of the top animals in the here- ford and angus classes. I finally make my way through the crowd so that I can now see the steers. My goodness! Is that Harry Romes- berg standing there beside the prize winning hereford? Yes, it is Harry and standing beside him is Paul Clevenger who owns the angus. How proud they look! Why, there's Iack Romes- berg over there looking at some sick sheep. He's the head veterinarian here at the farm show and has been pretty busy this year. As I continue my walk, I wander into the Future Homemakers Division where, much to my surprise, I see Beatrice Hoover, Violet Trim- pey and Gretchen Laus. They have just come from a Home Ec. teachers meeting and are about ready to leave the Farm Show to go back to their teaching jobs. I hear an awful racket ---rv reamn, Cfaaa 155 which seems to be coming from the poultry divi- sion. I run to see what has happened. As I look through the door, I see feathers flying every- where and chickens making an awful racket. Why, these are Don Younk'in's chickens and there's Don himself chasing that big rooster over there. In an instant, the Farm Show scene is gone, and in its stead I hear the pleasing music of a dance band. I see a lavish night club with hundreds of people dancing. I see the band with its handsome band leader standing in front. Why, it's Iohn Pfeifer and there's Shirley Putman at the piano. The fellow with the sax I recognize as Lloyd I-Ieinbaugh and the soloist is Shirley Welsh. The people certainly do en- joy their music. The night club is gone and instead of music I can hear a clanking noise, like the noise of tools on metal. I see a big garage now. Yes, that sign on the door does read Weyand's Trucking Line , and there's Dean himself in one of his trucks. Two of his other drivers are Tel- ford Baker and Nez Breegle. It certainly would take skill to drive one of those things. Inside the garage I see two of his top mechanics talk- ing to an air force pilot. Why that's Albert Mil- ler and Dwight Schrock and they're talking to Bill Hay. CI-low handsome he looks in that uni- forml For myself I see a laboratory in a polio re- search center. I am working on the perfection of a vaccine which will guarantee immuniza- tion from polio. Now, as I sit here in this darkened room, I am very happy with the knowledge that dreams of all my classmates and myself will be fulfilled. -By Carol Forbes . .. . - - -...W--.-.-...y---Q---vv-., -..
