Trimpey FOUR HAPPY YEARS TOGETHER Four happy years have come to a close and now we must face the world with only the pro- tection of our education we have worked for in Rockwood High School. With bright looks of expectancy, forty-six students entered this school and were greeted by the sophomore initiation party, after which we felt like old hands. We sponsored a movie at the Rockne Theater, which became our yearly proiect. As sophomores we purchased the electric score board for the gymnasium, sponsored a party for the freshmen and were sorry to find only thirty-eight ot our members remained. Our junior year was a happy one as we were coming closer to our goal, we received our rings and were proud to be a part ot such a fine school. Our class play was a mystery comedy, Lights Out, which was presented with much anticipation as we were showing the audience our acting ability. With great enthusiasm we watched cur basketball team become Class B Champs and were proud to have members of our class on the team. ln the spring we presented the annual Junior-Senior Prom to bring to a close the festivities. This year we returned with thirty-four mem- bers and immediately set to work making our last year a successful one. Our biggest proiect, Senior Class Play, Meet the Middletons, was presented early in the fall. We began looking forward to the spring when we would be busy with Baccalaureate and Commencement services. As we leave our many friends in high school we are grateful for the many things we have been taught and realize that now we are on our own, we have graduated from a fine school. We regret leaving, but we are proud to be alumni of Rockwood High School. By MARJORIE KREGER. Our money- making scheme was selling Christmas cards, wrap- ping paper and stationery. We chose as our project inset lights for the gymnasium. As a group of fifty-one, we came back as Sopho- mores. We had much fun initiating the Freshman class, followed by the Freshman-Sophomore Hobo Party. To start out our Junior year we had forty-nine members, dropping a few along the way. On Oc- tober 26, we ordered our class rings, and received them in May. Our spring activities were the Junior Class Play and the Junior-Senior Prom. One of our minor projects for the year was selling hot-dogs and popcorn at the basketball games. We are all filled with anxiety at the thought of becoming seniors next year, left to Rightl--Hilernan, Sechler, Vought, Rush, Kaufman. Many new happy students enrolled, but all of us were happier after the initiation. Our project was selling Christ- mas cards and wreaths, greeting cards, and wrap- ping paper. We purchased an electric scrubbing- polishing machine for the school. On August 20, fifty-four ot us returned as Sophcmores. Some were new but most of us were the same old crowd. We had a great time initiating the Freshmen and giving them a welcome party. Fifteen boys took part in the active sports, and we held our first assembly on November 2, 1949 with on Original ploy, The Quiet School Room. Our project was selling ice cream at the basket- ball games, and we made out quite well. 'A Oo 'tv 1, tbl s , w -. First Row, Lett to Right -Crisoh, Prrtts. Although very nerv- ous and excited we still kept our good manners and reserve as we met our new and strange teachers. We, of the Freshman Class, found our fellow students and teachers kind and considerate. The first few days at Rockwood were rather hectic at first, but we soon recovered after our experience of initiation. We, of the Freshmen class wish to thank the Sophomores for the wonderful time we had at the Freshmen-Sophomore party. We are lcoking forward to next year when we get to greet the Freshmen. We learned salesmanship as we sold Christmas cards under the direction of Mrs. Martin. We also learned Parliamentary Procedure as we elected our officers. f rw-,N . . With hard work and under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Martin, we considered our play a great success. Everyone had a lot of fun at practice, and we can never forget how hard it was for Doris Jean and Doug to get in on the act at the right time. The many incidental argu- ments between Prittsie and Bink still ring in our ears. lt seems Bink was always in the doghouse, as he and Doris just couldn't seem to make rehearsals on time. These are our memoirs of a great time in our schooldays. Berkebile caught in one of his spills while Carpenter and Sanner watch. THEY PUBLISH THE NEWS The Rohistat has undergone a complete change during the past school year. Every effort was made to make the paper strictly a student publication. Instead of the editor doing all the work, the stat? has been divided into three main editors under the executive editor. All assign- ments were made and corrected by these editors and then submitted to the executive editor For his final approval. After the galley proof was returned from the printers, the lay out was set up by the respective editors and sent back for the final copy. The Rohistat, which is issued once every six weeks, was entirely self-supporting. The money was obtained through advertisements secured by the business staff early in the year, and by the revenue obtained in selling subscriptions and single copies, Next year a new group of students will be working diligently to keep our paper growing. This new system of strictly student edition is working. Let's keep it going! Left to Right'-Tedrow, Romesberg, Speicher, Schrock. Rockwood High School organized its first student government this year. It consists of two representatives from each class in the Junior- Senior high school and also a president and vice president from the senior and junior class respectively. The purpose of this council is to discuss and act upon any problems confronting the student body. During the past year it operated very successfully. With all hearts fluttering, the team trotted out onto the Somerset High School t BENEDICT K. ORTMAN COACH floor for the game which could make them Dis- trict 5 champs. However, after a thrilling game in which both sides took turns at holding the lead, Everett High emerged the victor by the close score of 33-31. As is usually the case, Rcckwood's 1949-50 team was rated in the pre-season write-ups as a team very likely to finish not higher than third or fourth place, since they had lost four letter- men from their championship team of the previ- ous year. But good teams are built from the available material instead of being handed down as a gift and Coach Ortman again is proving that he has what it takes to build his boys into a championship team. This year's team has accomplished three re- markable feats in its cage schedule: First, that it handed down a defeat to Berlin High School's dribblers which is something that had not been done by our teams for several years of compe- tition. Second, that our boys compiled a perfect record on the home f1oor this season, and third, that our school has taken the county champion- ship for the second straight year. Our record this year shows 16 wins and 3 losses of which two were handed to us in league play. Setting us back with a 26 to 25 loss, the Stoystown team captured first place and left us in the cellar with a O and 1 record. Nevertheless, we fought back until we had gained our lead in the league and in spite of another setback, at the hands of Stonycreek Twp., cap- tured the Class B title. All students of the high school can be proud of their team and none need to regret the ef- fort they expended in supporting Mr. Ortman and the boys. The Rockwood High School baseball team turned in a very successful record for the, fall season, winning four and losing none. Three of the four victories were very impressive shut outs. The Mainliner's developed a very fine de- fensive team with a tight infield and a crop-of strong-armed outfielder. The team as a whole committed only four errors during the fall season. The sluggers and clutch hitters of Rock- wood High also greatly improved. They ex- pressed their hitting ability and will to win, when in the late innings of a game with Hoovers- ville, the Mainliners came from behind to win the game 5-3. Jack Critchfield, veteran Mainliner hurler, bore the brunt of the mound duties and turned in several commendable performances, topping them all with a no-hit, no-run game in the season's final with Hooversville High. This spring, with the -experience of last faIl's games, the players should combine their batting power and defensive ability with their spirit and co-operation to give Rockwood High School a very victorious baseball season. Following are the scores of last fall's games: Sept. 9-Salisbury O at Rockwood 6 Sept. I3-Rockwood 4 at Salisbury 0 Sept. 20-Rockwood 5 at Hooversville 3 Sept. 27-Hooversville. 0 Qi Rgckwood ,,--,,,, 3 I .4 r -g,,P5' ,alive A 'sans 5' iw' wg, 9 x dv' 5.1 , . 4 E' 1 ii 5 Q -A. .., all I Q5 -Is. 1 ' 4 r 5 7' ' ' gig 5 f nf Z , .
