HEIST - MCCAIN HOSIERY MILL -ea m CLASS HISTCRY On August 26, 1951, we, the Freshman Class of Rockwell enrolled seventy-eight reluctant boys and girls.Yes,we were reluctant because of the newness of our surroundings and our title of green freshmen. Of course we landed in the wrong rooms, confused the teachers and convinced them that we had a lot to learn. I am afraid classes were just things to be avoided and holidays were of extreme joy to us. The following fall we began our Sophomore year. Now grown physically, perhaps more than men- tally, we stalked the halls, looking with great compassion upon the poor freshman, Some of our fellow classmen had fallen by the wayside, making our total number now sixty-two. Our class, being outstanding in athletics, gave James Haynes, Bill Kluttz, Jerry Fry, Bobby Holshouser, Glenn Sides, Junior Poole and Larry Vanhoy to our football squad and Frankie Rattz, Lavada Galloway, JoAnne Coley, Joan Morgan, Wayne Bost, Junior Poole, James Puckett, Bobby Holshouser, Yorke Peeler, and Larry Vanhoy to the basketball teams. As for love, most of us were indifferent. Yet, we found that a few couples began to roam the halls. Terry and Mary Virginia and James and Ann began gazing shyly at one another. Afternoon jobs, money, movies, hamburgers and convertibles stood first in our estimation, studying last. Thus our Sophomore year drew to a close with many fond recollections. After a short period of relaxation we now entered the Junior year of work. This year became a most delightful one. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Boyd and Miss Wagner, who devoted many hours to our class activities, we presented our play Smilin' Through. One of the most important happenings of this year was the Talent Show. Our crown of Royalty might truly be presented to Violet Eudy for her faithfullness and hard work which made our show a delightful and successful one. As spring approached, we turned our thoughts to the Junior-Senior Banquet, a grand climax of the year. Since distance lends enchantment, the class decided to entertain our friends at the Yadkin Hotel in Salisbury. The Hawaiian theme, exotic and beautiful, gave us fond recollections to store in our mem- Ory book for the future years. Then as the final school days arrived, we took our examinations, looked with envy at the Senior seals in chapel, selected our prize lockers for the coming year and retired from the scene. Seniors! With vigorous steps we marched back to school to begin the year of 1953. Our boys were busy on the football field while the girls were occupied in the office, library, with the school paper and the annual. We appeared to be as busy as any American Senior of today. We looked forward eagerly to our Senior activities for the coming year, such as the play, the Junior-Senior Banquet and graduation. As a group our Class had been o u ts tan ding in scholarship, athletics and dramatics. Many of us will start again-college freshmen of 1954. Our days at Rockwell High will soon be concluded, as we leave the portals, we should like to express our devotion and gratitude to all who have helped make it possible for us to complete our high school ed- ucation. Let us give to life the best we have and perhaps the best will come to us. Historian Larry Vanhoy CLASS POEM 1 T Q Now four years are over, commencement time is nigh. W Emotions of happiness and sadness are mixed. ' ' As the time draws near to bid our schooldays goodbye. 5 X Memories will live long after our path in life is fixed. CN We must bid farewell to our teachers and principal too. Their profession in life is one of the best. They always stood by as our knowledge grew, And only with their help have we finished our quest. Farewell to our friends--so faithful, so Une. Hope we'll meet again, is the chant of each heart, Now that, at last, our schooldays are through. As we drifted together, so we now drift apart. We are standing in the valley of decision With the knowledge we have gained in passing years. Our pattern in life must be cut with precision If our hopes remain undimmed by countless fears. All this we now say and then no more. On the twenty-fifth of May our schooldays are o're.
