I1 Environment For: opportunity challenge School is an environment for the students. It provides them with a place to learn, to meet people and to have fun in extracurricular activities. The school environment gives the student the opportunity to become whatever he or she desires. School is one of the places a student can use their experiences to prepare for the future. During the time spent as a student, they grow in many different ways. Besides maturig physically, they mature academically, emotionally and socially. Recent changes in the curiculum and the faculty provide an even broader range of areas for students to grow 1n. 1 k1: Growth Challenge School is an environ- ment where opportuni- ty knocks daily. Oppor- tunities fall into many diverse categories. Al- though these opportuni- ties are present, they are not always taken ad- vantage of. Students who choose to work in various school depart- ments are gaining ex- perience that will be valuable to them later in life. Convocations and in school demonstrations like Starlab, a portable planetarium, are avail- able only a short time, but provide students with the opportunity to explore areas. Besides taking advan- tage of the chance to study in a foreign coun- try, Foreign Exchange Students J immi J chann- son and Peder Pedersen provide Rockville stu- dents with the opportu- nity to experience and learn about different cultures. Opportunities are there for everyone, what is gained from them is up to the indi- vidual. Ln, growth opportunity School may provide the first challenge in a persons life. An individual may be challenged in many ways. Challenges may arise in athletics, scholastics, or extracurricular activities. The ever present challenge to be the best may cause an individual to go beyond what is expected of him. Enrolling in harder classes and striving to excel in them is a perfect example of challenge. Building a robot in advanced physics class is another example. Another challenge is available to Seniors. Some of them chose to take Senior Composition for college credit. This gives those students a headstart in preparing for college. Challenge is vital to a student's daily development. Without challenge no progress is made. lint: . When students think of school, they naturally think of homework and tests. But contrary to that opinion, THERE IS MORE. SCHOOL IS: Fighting your way through the 200 hallway 6:00 am. As the year went on the shows became more complicated than ever before. the band got used to the unique style of the new director. Major events of the year included ISSMA Concert band competition, Spring Concert, and the Christmas Concert. The Choir also had a productive year. Activities participated in include: Turkey Run Choral Festival, Covered Bridge Hymm Sing, Drama Club Christmas Dinner Theater, Christian Church Prayer Breakfast. Overall the choir worked hard but had a lot of fun. During Basketball season the RHS pep band had the Rock-A-Dome Rockin. Comments from other schools included that they hated to come to Rockville because the band was too loud and far too rowdy. The Roxetts livined up their act this year with the addition of a Rifle Corps. The majority of the squad was young and will give even more of a contribution to RHS athletic events next year. After a week of strenuous float building and spirit days, everyone was looking forward to the coronation after the parade. As each candidate walked out onto the floor the anticipation grew very strong within the crowd. The crowd was sil- ent and then Tanya Michael's smile grew from ear to ear when hearing her name an- nounced as the 1985 queen. She was then crowned by student council members, Amy Evans and Ross Weath- erman. On Friday all the students took time out. The Student council sponsored class com- petition. The winners of the balloon race were sophomores Dale Davis and Jim Cody. Christy Games won the trike race for seventh grade and Lisa Clary and Becky Simic were the winners of the 3- Iegged race. Only one cas- ualty was reported! During the 3-1egged race Pete Goch dove to the finish line and chipped his front tooth during his dramatic dive. The freedom of flexible practices allowed for the new trend. Some of this yeafs extravaganzas were the play 'Christmas at Checkpoint Charlie , Forties Big Band dance and dinner, Mothers' Day dinner dance, and the main event the musical uRock-N-Roll . The musical involved many late night practices and a lot of hard work. The final product was well worth the effort. The three performances went smoothly. Corndoggy , portrayed by Senior Chris Law, had troubles that have been experienced by everyone at one time or another. His enormous crush on ttBetsy Lou , played by Senior Donna Gregg, and his inability to let her know his feelings set up the stage. Over the course of the play he solves his problem and gets the girl. The play abounds with Nerds, including Duffy , played to the utmost of nerddom by Sophomore Steve Simic, and Manfred played by Darr in Peacock. Football Star uForest Barrett' was played by Senior J oe Miller, Frankie energetically portrayed by Sophomore Dean Paddock, were a couple of the jocks. When asked about the musical Mr. Jones said it was the best thing Rockville has ever done theatrically. m-a Duffy played by Sophomore Steve Sxmlc tells Bumpers played by Senior Tanya Michael how he WlSth he had a glrlfnend. X 3 103 HEAVEN The magical evening started with the traditional feast at the Prom Banquet which was held at the lst United Methodist Church. After dinner, the laughter began with the reading of the Senior wills and the Junior Prophecy. Junior creativity was noticed when couples were escorted through the doors of the gym and found themselves in a mystical world of Heaven . Couples danced the night away with the music of uTransit. from Crawfordsville. The gym was arrayed as a scene of clouds and a clear blue sky. This year, students chose for their reigning royalty Shelley Breedlove as Queen and Sean Lucas as King. The members of her Court were Nicole Crooks, and Staci Wolf. The escorts were Tony Wagner, Greg Barrett, and Greg Breedlove. The servers were Suzanne Beal, Anne Timberlake, Angie Rohe, and Stephanie Reeder. At the stroke of midnight Cinderellas and charming Princes became Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The night had not ended, the excitement was directed to the 4-H Building, for the Post From. We put in months of work trying to get this finished. We started in the beginning of the year trying to decide what the book would look like. Our brainstorming sessions sometimes became pretty bizzare. But that's how the staff wasi Producing a 132 page book in 9 months is not easy. Deadlines seemed to be coming at us in all directions. There were always pages to draw. pictures to crop, or copy to write. The staff gave up their Wednesday nights and sometimes weekend afternoons to make sure you would get a topnotch book. Even with all this work, we had fun. Every staff member was also an excellent wheelchair drivers. We also had a expert cockroach hunter, and an uncontrollable giggler. We hope this book will help you keep the memories of this school year alive. But even as you read this, the Retrospect staff will already be hard at work designing the 86-87 book. 130 Bonny Lewus and Mary Stites are solemnly working. Krista Weatherman is excited after searching for some pictures the entire school year and finally finding them.
