HOMECOMING 1967 . . skyrocketing school spirit . . . blazing bonfire . . . football, fast and furious . . .thrills . frantic fans . . . the elation of upsetting T urkey Run. R .H .S . spirit was not dampened in Spite of the weather as the R'ox out-classed their northern foe 37 to 6 to keep firm possession of the Covered Bridge Trophy. The scoring was well balanced as Dale Teague collected two touchdowns, While teammates Crosley, Higgs, Clouse, and Thomas each added one. Of the 191 yards gained rushing, Don Hartman and Pete Thomas tallied 40 apiece to lead in that department. Senior end Jim Crosley led in pass reception, gathering in 3 for a total of 50 yards. French Club ' Adding haute Parisienne flavour to this year's meetings are the reminiscences of sponsor Mrs. Buchanan, who spent four weeks in Europe and her beloved Paris this past summer. . . . Latln Club The Junior Classical League, formed to create a better under- standing of Latin to- day, starts off the school year with a slave auction. Inflation seems to have invaded this Roman traditional event according to market reports! However, as Christmas aigljives this Roman extravagance recedes and good Will takes over by the presentation of holiday gifts to unfortunate children . The hi -1ight of the year is the Roman Banquet at which guests arrive in the prescribed Roman attire to partake of the feast . The club year climaxes With the state JCL convention. Library Club The major objective of the club is to help - with library duties . Each year Mrs. M. Collings, the club sponsor sends two mem- bers to attend the workshop for high school library assistants . Members also attend the Hoosier Students Librarian Association Which meets each year at one of the state universities . Last year President Judy Southard won the State Library Association's Librarian for the Day Award . Besides Judy the officers are: Vice -President-- Sandra Downes; Secretary -Treasurer - -Bob Graham; Reporters --Linda Nickle and Carol Teague; Historians--Ann Grafton and Cathy Southard . This year's Future Homemakers of America finds itself profiting from new money making projects. Honor Society Rockville High School members base their services on the Honor Society creed. Their objectives are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character in students of the secondary schools of the nation. Chemphybiogens With the emphasis placed on chemistry, physics, and biology the science club participates in experiments, field trips, and Club projects in order to learn the facts of science first hand. JIM CROSLEY MAX HIGGS STEVE JEFFRIES DAVE WELCH 4O Proving to be the best in the history of of Rockville, the 1967 -68 ROX Basketball team won the Bi-County Tourney and are favorites to win the conference cham- pionship and the Brazil Sectional. Lead- ing the Rox are 6'7 112 Bill Newton, 6'3 Steve Rankin, 6'4 Jim Crosley, 6'1 Steve Jeffries, 5'10 Max Higgs and Tom Clary. Also contributing to the Rox efforts are 6'1 Dave Welch, 5'11 Bob McCullough, 6'3 Dave Dooley, 6'0 J. B. Butler, 5'10 Joe Collings, and Dale Teague, and 6'0 Mike Schiedt. Both Rankin and Newton are sure bets for All-Conference and possibly the All-State Team, With Crosley, Jeffries, Clary, and Higgs candidates for either lst or 2nd Teams All -Conference. The 1967 -68 Team has restored new Pride to the basketball program at Rockville and can contribute their success to teamwork, desire, hardwork, and pride. Runner up- -Cougars '''''' H ferry Huhtsm an, footbafl coatih at I.S.U., was the guest speaker; at the annual All Sports banquet iii the Rockville gymnasium. last 'Thtirsday evening. Mr. Huntsman spoke on the qualities of a good athlete and how an individual can benefit only by what he decides within himself to do. He point- ed out that whether a team wins or loses, the members of that team can always be winners by developing a positive attitude and spirit. The mothers of the athletes had organized the pitch-in-dinner. A1- tho there was a tremendous crowd, there was plenty of good food for all the athletes, their families and other school pa- trons. Following the address by Mr. Huntsman, each coach intro- duced the boys on his team and told of the highlights of the sea- son. Also, each coach presented the individual award winners with their trophies. Steve Rankin and Bill Newton each received three awards. Rankin won the Borden Free Throw award for maintaining the highest free-throw percentage. He received the Track Distance award for his performance in the 440-yard race. Steve set school records several times in this race. His third award was the Track award. This is a mental attitude award chosen by a com- mittee of men .who observed the athletes performance thru the season. Bill Newton received the Bas- ketball Rebound award for mak- ing the highest number of re- bounds thruout the season. He was Chosen by his fellow basket- ball players as the mostvaluable player. Billis third award was the Box All Sports Athletic Banquet i 2 r. Dr. Basil Merrell award. This award is presented to the Senior letter winner, who has the high- est academic standing. Jim Crosley received two tro- phies. For his performance in football, Jim received the Brooks T. Ceilings memorial award. In basketball he received the Jacks award. Both awards are mental attitude iawards chosen by a committee of men who have ob- served the athletes performance thmout the season. Steve Jef- fries received the Most Valuable Runner award in Cross Country and tied with Max Higgs for the Defensive award in basketball. Max also won a second award as the Most Improved Basket- ball Player. Mike Payton was chosen by the members of the football team as the Lineman 0f the Year. Also elected by the football team wa Vic Wilber as Back of the Year Dave Welch was chosen by th coaching staff to receive th iSpecial Football award on th basis of his desire and willing ness. Bob McCullough received th Silver Shoe Track award for ear: ing the most points during th season. Mike Siddens won th Field Event trophy for his pei formance in the pole vault. I . 6W m-ww WK. , N colum??i: syo POST PROM goes on and on and on With inclement Spring weather prevailing most of the 1967 season, the Rockville Track Team compiles a reasonably good 15-5 record, breaking one school record. Placing 3rd in the Conference and scor- ing 117 U2 points in the B1 -County, the Rox missed the Championship by only one point. Distance Award--Steve Rankin with 53.0 in 440. Top Sprinter and Field--Bob Lang, Jim Crosley. RHS Track Award- -Ra1ph Heifner. Silver Shoe--Bob McCullough. Jeffries Home - -10: 14 Away - -10:23 Finishing a successful 1967 season, the Rockville Rox squad consists of top runner Steve Jeffries plus Darrell Berry, Keith Fisher, Chad Willhite, and Mark Montgomery. Each of these boys have a record of at least one race under 11:00. Record Won 2 Lost 6 Being plagued by poor golfing weather f and Lady Luck during the 1967 season, the Box Golf team hopes to improve in stature during the coming 1968 spring schedule. In addition to returning lettermen Greg Schrader and Dave Welch, the squad will be strengthened With the ef- 1 forts of Max Mathas, Greg Steuerwald and Tony Reeder. 53 Finishing 4th place in the 1967 Conference standing, which is an improvement in Rox Baseball history, promises high hopes for the 1968 season. Being defeated by North Vermillion in the Bi-County Tourney, and eliminated by F ountain Central in the opening Sectional game, the ROX Conference Record stands at a respectable four and four.
