20 THE TATLER with newcomers Billy Wood, David Farley, George Pinkham, Skipper Pound, David Kontio, Lawrence Frye and Robert Greene. Although some fine performances were seen by our top runners, the team lacked the depth needed to remain champions. SCORES Rockport 35 Warren 20 Rockport 52 Camden 38 Rockport 24 Union 33 Rockland 38 Rockport 27 Vinalhaven 33 Rockport 23 Bristol 36 Rockport 41 Hinckley 16 LEAGUE MEET Warren 38, Rockport 44, Union 57, Bristol 80 Steve Goodridge '60 VOLLEY BALL Although our volley ball team did not win the championship we had a successful season, winning our first four games and losing the last one to Bristol. Members of our team, coached by Mr. Leonard, were: Patty Greene, Norma Heath, Dot Ulmer, Debbie Hanna, Gail May, Linda-Jane Barrows, Ruth Erickson, Toppy Frye, Judy Young fcaptainj, Nancy Young, Marie Cavanaugh, Trudy Crane, Barbara Smith, Gerry Pound, Linda Turner, Gerry Morton, Pat Pierce, Betty Leland, Annie May Young and Patty Simonton. Ruth Ann Erickson '60 1958 SOFTBALL Encouraged by our undefeated record of 1957, we started the season out with much enthusiasm. But our good intentions were soon shattered by our upset at Union and our loss to Appleton. Players were: pitcher, Shirley Marshall, catchers, Ginger Ulmer and Linda Turner, first base, Jean Frye, second base, Ruth Erickson, third base, Gail May, short stop, Dot Ulmer, short fielder, Linda-Jane Barrows, and fielders, Nancy Young, Norma Heath and Gerry Pound. Substitutes were: Ruth Pierce, Judy Johnson, Trudy Crane, Barbara Smith and Rowena Twitchell. The disappointment of last season did not discourage us, though. Twenty-four players turned out for the first softball meeting this season. We found that we had lost only one player because of graduation. This was Jean Frye. So with much determina- tion, we are looking forward to a much better season. Dorothy Ulmer '60 BOYS M-V-L TRACK AND FIELD CO-CHAMPIONS After tying Bristol for top honors in the previous track meet, we were determined to win this one. But, by a coincidence, the same thing happened again. The score was Rockport 37, Bristol 37, Union 24, Warren 1, Appleton and St. George, no score. Two highlights of the day came when Dennis Mer- rill broke the half-mile record and when Jimmy Annis tied the 440-yard mark. Merrill's time was 2: 25.1 and Annis' time was 59 seconds. Merrill was high scorer with 8 points. Our other scorers were as follows: Charlie Croc- kett with 7 points, Jimmy Annis with 5, Keith Crockett with 4, and Linwood Thorndike had 3. We also won the relay which accounted for the other 10 points. Steve Goodridge '60
