Rockport High School is more than merely a building in the hearts of those who have attended it through the years, for its memory will live forever. When other recollections have grown dim we can still turn back the pages of time and vividly picture ourselves sitting at the old familiar desks, vig- orously urging our team on to victory on the athletic field, spiritedly singing our school song, and finally marching solemnly forward to receive our diplomas. Although words cannot express our deepest and most heartfelt loyalty and devotion to the school on the hill, still Praise we sing to Rockport High. Therefore, to Rockport High School, her faculty, her stu- dent body, her alumni, and her never-ending spirit, we respect- fully dedicate this issue of our annual publication, THE TATLER. ,ak CHARLES CROCKETT College Course Rll HARD KI MMINH Q General lourse I agree with no mnn's opinion, I have some of my own. Not the cut and polished rocks of the jeweler's window, but the gem crystals in their beautiful, unaltered geometric patterns as found in nature. Man marvels at the wonderful luster and limpidity of the unearthed stones as examples of an art far beyond his comprehension. One who beholds the riot of colors in this seemingly be- witched tourmaline, the radiating blue- green of the aquamarine, or the royal purple amethyst, will surely realize that here are treasures of unsurpassed beauty. Gems are not only utilized to sym- bolive many varied events, but are also employed for their sheer beauty and ornamentation. Certain stones are traditionally significant of certain events such as the brilliant diamond for anniversaries and weddings and the vivid red ruby, the regal amethyst, the serene grass-green emerald and others equally enchanting as birthstones. Diamonds are the most universally popular and highly coveted of all gems. Although they have no color of their own, they reflect and display every color of the rainbow. From ancient times to the modern dav. these exquisite jewels of nature's handiwork have been valued for their embellishment and beautv, for beauti- 'ullv cut gems are like flowers coming into bloom from their buds of native stone. Yes, the gems-flowers of the 'Mineral kingdom. David Kontio '60 GOURMET'S DELI GH T Having worked for two summers as a waitress in a Chinese resturant, I have become fully acquainted with the Cantonese style of Chinese cooking. I have decided, after tasting almost every dish, that my favorites are lob- ster sauce with shrimp and sweet and pungent pork over fried rice. Watching the cooking makes the meal itself even more enjoyable. The lobster sauce consists of ground pork, egg, a special thickening, whole shrimp, sliced green scallions, many seasonings, all flavored with a special bean. The contrast of the white rice, pinkish-orange shrimp, and bright green scallions against the rich brown gravy makes your mouth water even when you glance at this dish. The name lobster sauce is mis- leading because, actually, there is no lobster in it. The sweet and pungent pork is the most colorful of any dishes I have even seen-even more colorful than the gayest tossed salad. The gravy is made of vinegar and sugar with a rich thickening which gives a very bal- anced sweet and sour taste. As this gravy is brought to a boil, the sweet and pungent aromas seem to alternate. Then when the mixture thickens, the orange carrots, light and dark green mixed pickles, bright red tomatoes, grass-green peppers, fluffy tops of cauliflower, and almost crystal-clear babv onions are added. Meanwhile the pork has been dipped into a rich egg batter and deep fried. Added to the vegetables and gravy, it is served on fried rice. Once having tried this dish, anvone could plainly see why it is a favorite among the customers and, of course, among the kitchen help. Sue Goodridge '60 A CANDID SNAPSHOT OF A PLEASANT MEMORY! I remember Rockville school. The incident which I recall most vividly about our country school was our an- nual expedition to get a Christmas Tree. The entire enrollment of our one-room school enthusiastically parti- cipated in the outing. On the appoint- ed day several big boys brought hatchets for the important operation. We all donned our snow-suits and boots, hopefully expecting to encounter mountainous drifts. Armed with the hatchets and a yardstick to measure the height of the tree, we cheerily headed toward the nearby woods. How particular we were! Only a tree per- fectly symetric in design was consid- ered worthy of the place of honor at the front of our school-room. When the faultless tree was finally found, measured, and chopped down by many energetic but amateur strokes of the hatchets, we tramped back to school, tired but happy, dragging our tree be- hind us. Joyce Farmer '60 FROM A CHILD,S VIEWPOINT My eyes were wide with amazement at this thing I saw lying before me on the blanket. Of course I had seen others, but never as close as this. Why I could reach out and touch it! I wanted to, very badly, for it looked as if it would be pussy-willow-soft be- neath my fingers, but somehow I didn't quite dare. What if it should break? It was fragile, and very, very tiny. It looked something like me, only I was bigger. I wasn't tiny-I was four. I laid my cheek down on the wooly blan- ket to be closer to it, and I discovered something else. It smelled! It smelled like the first daisy I found in the spring, and like the lilacs in the yard after it rained. It smelled a little like my kitten, and like the pink soap on the top shelf. This was pink too, but it smelled twice as good as any old THE TATLER 13 soap. The blanket began to tickle my neck, I raised my head to find myself looking at a pair of eyes like the blue buttons on my Sunday coat. These buttons regarded me solemnly, and I, just as solemnly, stared back at them. Gathering my courage, I reached out and touched its hair-it was just like the milkweed fluff in the field. And then a miracle happened-it reached out its tiny hand that was no bigger than my doll's, clasped its fingers around my thumb, and gave a little gurgle fwhich I thought was the nicest thing that I had ever heardj . From that moment on-my little sister was my friend. Deborah Hanna '60 I have a car. ' It is a very nice car. It does not eat much gas. It does not eat much oil. It does does not have punctures. It has a very nice radio. It does not get into accidents. It does not collect tickets. I like my car. It is a very nice car. I wish I could start it. Anonymous THE OLD DOG The old dog straggled along the path, head drooping, tail hanging limp, look- ing as though the elastic band on which his limbs were strung had broken. The back-bone and the ribs of this pathetic cur were plainly visible, tempting one to touch the living skele- ton and hear the bones rattle. Even the dog's intelligent face was marred by a rheumy eye. While one eye was brown and clear, the other was only a shapeless gray mass, void of understanding, mute evidence of past misfortune. Suddenly, as a rabbit hopped across his narrow field of vision, a vestige of lost youth returned to the dog. His head jerked up and his tail began to 14 THE TATLER wag. Uttering loud staccato barks, he tried to pursue the fleeing hare. However, as quickly as it had come, his animation left him, and he contin- ued his solitary way, whimpering and limping as he dragged the worn pads of his feet over sharp stones. As the path became steeper, the dog's struggle to move became more painful. He began to gasp for every labored and rasping breath. At last he reached the summit and collapsed with fatigue. His head sunk onto his pawsg his eyelids droopedg he slept. Joyce Farmer '60 WHAT IS ON THE MOON? What would life on the moon be like? Would we be able to drive cars or ride a bike? The moon is said to be made of green cheese, But I think they say that just to tease. Now I wonder if there will 'be little green men, , . , And will the flowers have the same stem? Do they have music with a beat? Or do they like it soft and sweet? Will the ground be damp or dry? Will there be stars up in their sky? I would like to know if there'll be A bird, vegetable, flower, or tree. All these wondrous things I'd like to know, So I can't wait until to the moon we go! Edna Dow '60 COLORS OF NIGHT At first as night is about to set in, the sky is mingled with corals, pinks, and oranges from the last rays of the sun. The billowing clouds, growing still, seem to be resting on soft, red- violet sheets. Now the sky is turning a sweet lavender and all is quiet. All that is left of the once beautiful day is one single lonely ray of the sunlight peering from behind a far-off mountain and the now blue-outlined clouds. As this last ray disappears, the sky turns a sullen gray, leaving everything life- less on earth,-the dead brown grass, the stiff, eerie ehn trees, ,the gray houses. Now all is turning a brownish blue giving an effect of spaciousness to the countryside. Lights flash on, send- ing out yellow glows here and there along the street. Everything is getting darker in a blue haze. Finally nothing close at hand is visible. Night is here. Patricia Simonton '62 FEEDING THE GOLD FISH This incident happened one day when I was small. My mother usually fed the gold fish but this afternoon I wanted to. So I climbed up to the cup- board and got the box which I thought was fish food and fed the contents to them. Well, in five minutes the fish were jumping out of the water trying to get air. When I told my mother, she quickly changed the water but it wasn't quick enough. Mom asked me what I fed them and when I showed her the box, she discovered it was PAPRIKA! Sandra Upham '62 I REMEMBER One day while I was doing my chore of graining the hens, a rooster pecked at my foot. I didn't think anything of it then because he did it all the time. But as I bent over to gather up some eggs, suddenly the rooster flew upon my back and started pecking me, vi- ciously and fiercely. He pecked me so hard that I was very irate. I swung around, eyed the rooster, and then heaved the iron grain scoop at him, grain and all. The blow killed him and I didn't care just then. But my next thought was how would I explain it to my father! Gerry Morton '62 THE RAVEN fRevisedj Studying an ancient volume of leg- ends, I was in my room that dreary De- cember midnight. The embers of my fire were dying, leaving the fireplace as mute as the rest of the room. A slight tapping at my door roused me from a half sleep. I was puzzled. Who could that be at this hour? No one was at the door. How I wish for tomorrow and Lenore! She was so beautiful and sweet. Sighing, I went back to my book to forget my heartache. I heard the tapping again. The curtain fluttered restlessly, filling my heart with ter- ror. Whoever you are, I cried, Pre- sent yourself! Silence greeted my outburst. Did I dare hope it might be Lenore? I whispered. Silence was my answer. Again the tapping sounded, but this time it seemed to come from the window. I whirled around and a raven stood before me. He stood per- fectly still. Suddenly, I grinned at this grotesque bird. Nevermore, spoke the bird. He'll fly away with the others, I said. Nevermore! replied the bird. Then, as if forced by some unseen object, I burst forth with these ques- tions. Will I ever find a cure for my grief and sorrow? Is she in Heaven and will I ever see her again? Nevermore, was the answer. Get out! I shouted, Get out! Nevermore, the bird said undis- turbed. Then and there, I knew I would never be free of my mourning for Lenore. Barbara Smith '60 HASTE MAKES WASTE Arriving home from school, I went into the house and hunted for some- thing to eat, found a piece of choco- late cake, and went upstairs to change my clothes so that I could go down to the corner and tease the girls. Down in the kitchen I saw an aluminum dish full of maple syrup which I had col- lected the day before. This I set on our new electric stove to boil, went off and forgot it. When George Dinsmore and I re- turned about an hour later and opened the kitchen door, there was so much smoke in the house that we couldn't THE TATLER 15 see our hands before us. We groped our way into the dreadfully smoke- filled room and through the house. I thought the house was on fire, but when I could faintly see a red spot where the electric stove was, I sudden- ly knew what the trouble was: I had left the electric burner on high and the sap had boiled over. We opened the doors and windows as fast as we could find them. Then I shut off the electri- city, picked the pot off the stove and threw it outdoors. There wasn't any bottom in it, it had melted. The house was a dirty, smoky mess. The smoke had even gone upstairs to the bedrooms. But the stove was the most pitiful sight. The syrup had burned into the enamel, the electric burner was all black, and the top of the stove was warped into a sag in the middle. My mother was heartbroken but my father wasn't the least bit an- gry with me, to my surprise. A little later when things calmed down, we worked together and got the black scraped off with razor blades, and after the metal cooled completely, even the warped middle rose up to its normal shape. Donald Hamalainen '62 ON READING A BOOK To me, reading a book is a challenge. It evokes comparison of my interpre- tation and opinions with those of the author. I have often picked up and discarded a book whose title dissatified me be- cause it did not adequately describe the book. On the other hand when someone whose opinion was interesting enough to stimulate me has recom- mended a book, I have read it under the urge to compare my thoughts with those of the other reader. By means of word pictures and illustrative anecdotes I am given a glimpse of, perhaps, life in another country, ideas and opinions on politics or religion, and even of personal ac- centricities. 16 THE TATLER In a good story I relax and let my- self become a part of what I am read- ing. If the ending does not suit me, I am free to substitute my own to challenge the author's solution. Whether I accept what is written in a book or discard and replace it with my own version, I always feel that I have been indicated new roads to cri- tical thought for my next literary ex- cursion, and heartily agree with Thoreau that a written word is the choicest of relics . Judith Young '59 FACT OR FANCY? 'It's hard to separate what you have heard your parents telling when you were young from what you remember yourself. One of my earliest recollec- tions is of my brother taking me to to the movies. We would start down the hill and get halfway there when I would want to go home. My brother would turn back with me, whereupon I would say that I wanted to go .to the movies. Finally arrived at the theatre, I would cry to go home again just as the movie got interesting. One day my mother stood at the door until we got out of sight and heard me start in on my brother. She called us back and, boy, did I get it! Some of the time I think I remem- ber these things but when I hear Moth- er talk about them, I begin to think that I am picturing the incidents from her words. Gary Henry '62 Top. loft to right: V. Members of our team, coached by Mr. Leonard, were: Patty Greene, Norma Heath, Dot Ulmer, Debbie Hanna, Gail May, Linda-Jane Barrows, Ruth Erickson, Toppy Frye, Judy Young fcaptainj, Nancy Young, Marie Cavanaugh, Trudy Crane, Barbara Smith, Gerry Pound, Linda Turner, Gerry Morton, Pat Pierce, Betty Leland, Annie May Young and Patty Simonton. Ruth Ann Erickson '60 1958 SOFTBALL Encouraged by our undefeated record of 1957, we started the season out with much enthusiasm. But our good intentions were soon shattered by our upset at Union and our loss to Appleton. Players were: pitcher, Shirley Marshall, catchers, Ginger Ulmer and Linda Turner, first base, Jean Frye, second base, Ruth Erickson, third base, Gail May, short stop, Dot Ulmer, short fielder, Linda-Jane Barrows, and fielders, Nancy Young, Norma Heath and Gerry Pound. Substitutes were: Ruth Pierce, Judy Johnson, Trudy Crane, Barbara Smith and Rowena Twitchell. The disappointment of last season did not discourage us, though. Twenty-four players turned out for the first softball meeting this season. We found that we had lost only one player because of graduation. This was Jean Frye. So with much determina- tion, we are looking forward to a much better season. Dorothy Ulmer '60 BOYS M-V-L TRACK AND FIELD CO-CHAMPIONS After tying Bristol for top honors in the previous track meet, we were determined to win this one. But, by a coincidence, the same thing happened again. The score was Rockport 37, Bristol 37, Union 24, Warren 1, Appleton and St. George, no score. Two highlights of the day came when Dennis Mer- rill broke the half-mile record and when Jimmy Annis tied the 440-yard mark. Merrill's time was 2: 25.1 and Annis' time was 59 seconds. Merrill was high scorer with 8 points. Our other scorers were as follows: Charlie Croc- kett with 7 points, Jimmy Annis with 5, Keith Crockett with 4, and Linwood Thorndike had 3. We also won the relay which accounted for the other 10 points. Steve Goodridge '60 THE TATLER 21 M-V-L BASEBALL CHAMPIONS Last year's baseball team was one of the best ever seen by Rockport fans. The boys went undefeated through the season with a 10-0 record, being pushed to the limit only once by Bristol in a game which we won 8-7. Our infield was composed of Dennis Merrill at first base, Maurice Buster Kennedy at second, Dave Pound at short stop, and Sonny Went- worth and Sandy Graffam alternating at third. Walter Pendleton played left field. Center field was taken most of the time by George Starr, with Richard Sahninen playing that position in a few games. Carl Rhodes and Steve Fisher took turns at right field. The catcher was Dick Turner, and the pitchers were Buster Kennedy, George Winslow, Richard Salminen, Bill Bar- bour, and Jimmy Annis. Other players doing fine work were Charlie Crockett, Keith May, Carroll Peasley and Lawrence Frye. Although seven of the starting nine will not be with us this year, we hope for and expect another championship year. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN A kindhearted farmer told Basil Robinson, whose load of hay had overturned in the road, to forget his troubles and come in and have dinner with his family. There would be time enough to right the hay rack after a good meal. Basil demurredg he said he didn't think his father would like it. But the farmer persisted and won. M-V-L GIRLS' BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS Having lost the league championship to Union High School last year, thc Rockport Beaverettes worked hard to claim once again the title of Champions of the Medomak Valley League. This was accomplished. but not with the facility that we had anticipated. Our record for the season stood at ten wins and six losses. The forward trio consisted of Judy Young, Gail May, and co-captain Dot Ulmer. Backing them were Debbie Hanna. Nancy Young. and Linda-Jane Barrows. The guard section was made up of co- captain Toppy Frye, Ruth Anne Erickson, and Norma Heath. Seconding them were Gerry Pound. Barbara Smith, Linda Turner, and Sandra Morton. Our next yearls team will feel the results of the graduation of many of our first string players. These are: Toppy Frye, Norma Heath, Gail May and Judy Young. The two remaining players will be pushed for positions by many promising players who faithfully attended practices this year.
