THE TATLER 19 CROSS COUNTRY Th1s IS the second xear that Rockport Hlgh School has been represent ed bx a cross countrx team Our squard was small 1n numbers but full of determ1nat1on and under M1 Kmght s d1rect1on began practlcmg earlx 1n the season Th1s work was rewarded bx galnmg three vlctorles 1n the f1rst three contests We then stepped out of our class to prevent a long law off w1thout a meet and were defeated bv a good Rockland team Then back to our own league and a resoundlng vlctorx over Appleton The daw of the Medomak Valles League contest arrlved CFISD and clear We were reads for It and a long rugged run over Appleton Rldge began It gave us qulte a thr1ll at the flnlsh l1ne as we flnally saw two maroon and whlte Jerseys loomlng up 1n the d1stance well ahead of the pack Then came two runners from other schools followed bv the remalnder of the Rockport team and the f1rst M V L cross countrv champ1onsh1p was ours Buster Kennedv was the 1nd1v1dual wmner Wlth captaln Walt Pendleton close on h1s heels The score of the chamsplonshlp meet was Rockport 21 Brlstol 35 Appleton 82 Un1on 87 Warren 124 Well done team' BASEBALL Rockports last baseball champ1onsh1p pr1o1 to 1956 had been won 1n 1940 1n the old Trl Countx League Th1s was our f1rst entry 1n the new Medomak Vallev League and we had h1gh hopes The weather was bad durlng most of Aprll and early Maw whlch meant a curta1lment of our schedule so that onlv f1ve league games were plax ed However we were able to get on our dlamond 1n tlme to plax three games before the start of w ent through an undefeated season The chmax of the season came 1n the Lnlon game at Rockport w hen '1 few tough breaks found us tra1l1ng 5 21n the flfth lnmng But then the plcture changed we worked 1n two more runs and w 1th two on base Low ell Jones CTIOVQ 1 long l1ne drne lnto llght fleld to scale two more and put us m front 6 Q We held that lead to the end and that DldCtlCdllX me int the champ1onsh1p as our last two games w ere easx XlCtO1 1es XX 1th Jones and Carlton Farlex shar1ng the DlfChlHg and shortstop asslgnments Butch Farlew catchlng Steve D1et7 at f1rst Dave Pound lt thud md 1n the last few games D1ck Tu1ne1 It second ln 1nf1eld L DID 11111111011 was found wh1ch was hard to beat and could be depended upon to turn 1n double plax s when needed We are all griteful to our coach 'XI1 Paul Palks for h1s help 1n maklng thls a successful xear 1n baseball 1 . . 7 .
