All too soon the RMH School of Nursing will be a tradition of memory, ex- cept in the lives and work of its 1000 graduates. We the Seniors of '76 would like to preserve a small part of this tradition and history of the hospital and our school. A nursing school is made up of many things-an ideal of service or philoso- phy, goals for its students and graduates, a con- trolling body, standards and policies, teachers, buildings, the hospital staff, students, pressure, long- lasting moments and memories of friends never to be forgotten. We didn't just start with nursing the way it is today. Nursing has changed greatly due to the pioneers before us, and now, be- cause of our fast moving society, nursing is pro- ceeding to grow farther. In the past course of history the nurse was responsible for many duties, some of these are listed to the side. Nursing was considered a chore in those days of 1887. However in Rever- end Duffy's address spoken October 11, 1912 at the dedication cere- mony of Rockingham Me- morial Hospital in Harri- sonburg, he stated: The trained nurse who comes as the fruit of the hospital, comes to supply a place that hitherto was not, a need that was hardly rec- ognized,-but today the nurse is. For example if you earn 530 . ' a month you should set aside 515. Any nurse who smokes uses liquor in any form gets her hair done at a beauty shop or frequents dance balls will give the director of nurses good reason to suspect her worth intentions and integrity The nurse who performs her labors, serves her patients and doctors faithfully and without fault for a period of 5 years will be given an increase by the hospital administration of Sd a day providing there are no hospital debts that are outstanding. 1 'Circa 1887. When RMH opened, on October 1, 1912, the first students were accepted into its Nursing Program based on the form of ap- plication below and were taught at night by staff doctors.
