During all those years, the admission criteria changed. Studying became more in- volved due to the advance of science, thus adding to pres- sure, but enabling us to con- sider the patient and his problem as a whole. Change also brought forth an increase in tuition. In 1963, students paid 5475.00 for the three year program. When we entered in 1973 as freshmen, we paid S2,415.00, plus added personal expenses. Of course, nursing has changed considerably as compared to how it began. In 1896, the Nurse's Code of Ethics stated that the Nurse's first duty was to the doctor and her second duty was to the patient. No longer does this stand. The nurse's first consideration is her patient and she and the doctor work in their professional roles as a team. We assess the physical well-being as well as the mental and psychological status, then make long range goals for our patients. The following charts show the increase in number of patients as well as hospital expenditures.

In 1912 living quarters for students were in the hospital. The rooms con- sisted of five double deck beds and each student had a trunk and a dresser. As the hospital census grew, four or five students moved on to Cantrell Ave. Later, about 1920, students were moved to a house next to the hospital, later known as the Staff House. In 1925 the Nurses Home was built, and was torn down in 1966 to make room for the new hospital wing. Due to a student overflow in 1927, the base- ment of North Wing, which is now house- keeping, was used to house extra students. The year 1930 brought con- struction of a Laundry Room and students were quartered on the second floor. In 1949, the first floor of the laundry was con- verted to student rooms, and finally in 1959, our present day nurses' home was constructed. ' --.W .mp . , at 'r-vfv 5 , .N i 5.5 iliilfl . M' L
