We the Seniors of '76 would like to preserve a small part of this tradition and history of the hospital and our school. A nursing school is made up of many things-an ideal of service or philoso- phy, goals for its students and graduates, a con- trolling body, standards and policies, teachers, buildings, the hospital staff, students, pressure, long- lasting moments and memories of friends never to be forgotten. We didn't just start with nursing the way it is today. Nursing has changed greatly due to the pioneers before us, and now, be- cause of our fast moving society, nursing is pro- ceeding to grow farther. In the past course of history the nurse was responsible for many duties, some of these are listed to the side. Nursing was considered a chore in those days of 1887. However in Rever- end Duffy's address spoken October 11, 1912 at the dedication cere- mony of Rockingham Me- morial Hospital in Harri- sonburg, he stated: The trained nurse who comes as the fruit of the hospital, comes to supply a place that hitherto was not, a need that was hardly rec- ognized,-but today the nurse is. The best homes of In addition to carmd for your 50 patients each nurse will follow these regulations Daily sweep and mop the fioors of your ward dust the patient s furniture and window sills Maintain an even temperature in w our ward by bringing in a scuttle of coal for the day s business Light is important to observe the patient s condition Therefore each day fill kerosene lamps clean ehimnevs and trim wicks Wash the wind dws once a week The nurse s notes are important in Bldlfld the physician s work Make your pens carefully you may vs hxttle mbs to your md vidual taste Each nurse on day duty v. ill report ex ery day at 7 a m and leave at 8 p m except on the Sabbath on wi ich day you vw 11' be o from 12 noon to2 p m Graduate nurses in good standing vw ith the director of nurses vs ill he given an evening off each week if you go regularly to church Each nurse should lay aside from each pay day a goodly sum of her earnings for her benefits during her declininff 5 ears so that she will not become a burden. For example if you earn 530 . ' a month you should set aside 515. Any nurse who smokes uses liquor in any form gets her hair done at a beauty shop or frequents dance balls will give the director of nurses good reason to suspect her worth intentions and integrity The nurse who performs her labors, serves her patients and doctors faithfully and without fault for a period of 5 years will be given an increase by the hospital administration of Sd a day providing there are no hospital debts that are outstanding. 1 'Circa 1887. When RMH opened, on October 1, 1912, the first students were accepted into its Nursing Program based on the form of ap- plication below and were taught at night by staff doctors. Choose, go on with it, wherever it may lead you-and God be with you. Dr. Ward Howe to Florence Nightingale is i Miss Chase modeling the se- nior student uniform of 1919, shows that fashions and fads have caused a distinct change in uniforms today, traveling up- ward six inches from the floor to inches above the knee, today's permapress is easier to care for than yesteryear's star- ched gingham. R. lvl. No. 3. THE ROCKINGHAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING GRADUATE PIN When the first class of nurses graduated in 1915, Mrs. B. Ney, a prominent member of the Ladies Aux- iliary of the hospital wanted to give each gradu- ate a present of a pin Her two sons, Ferdinand and Manhattan Ney were owners of a jewelry store on Main Street where the Charles Store now stands. They looked at sample pins and worked out-the design of the pin, had the die cut, and the pins made for their mother so that they could be presented I . - . In 1912 living quarters for students were in the hospital. The rooms con- sisted of five double deck beds and each student had a trunk and a dresser. As the hospital census grew, four or five students moved on to Cantrell Ave. Later, about 1920, students were moved to a house next to the hospital, later known as the Staff House. In 1925 the Nurses Home was built, and was torn down in 1966 to make room for the new hospital wing. Due to a student overflow in 1927, the base- ment of North Wing, which is now house- keeping, was used to house extra students. The year 1930 brought con- struction of a Laundry Room and students were quartered on the second floor. In 1949, the first floor of the laundry was con- verted to student rooms, and finally in 1959, our present day nurses' home was constructed. ' --.W .mp . , at 'r-vfv 5 , .N i 5.5 iliilfl . M' L During all those years, the admission criteria changed. Studying became more in- volved due to the advance of science, thus adding to pres- sure, but enabling us to con- sider the patient and his problem as a whole. Change also brought forth an increase in tuition. In 1963, students paid 5475.00 for the three year program. When we entered in 1973 as freshmen, we paid S2,415.00, plus added personal expenses. Of course, nursing has changed considerably as compared to how it began. In 1896, the Nurse's Code of Ethics stated that the Nurse's first duty was to the doctor and her second duty was to the patient. No longer does this stand. The nurse's first consideration is her patient and she and the doctor work in their professional roles as a team. We assess the physical well-being as well as the mental and psychological status, then make long range goals for our patients. The following charts show the increase in number of patients as well as hospital expenditures. Answer me before you go. There's many things l've wondered about since l've been here in bed. Like why can't I get up and play, like my brother Ted? l've wondered about you too, nurse, ya didn't know I bet. And some of the things I ain't figured out yet. lust let me ask you nurse, is it sad to see somebody die? And just how do you know what to say when a Mom asks Why ? There are so many, many others here, that I just don't rightly see How you can always manage a special smile for me. How come you wear your hat in here, and leave it when you go? My Pa, he woulda busted me if I'd worn mine inside, you know. But most important, I gotta ask, do you always dress in white? But please don't ever change that, nurse, that color seems just right. You really do keep clean, what with all the things you do My Ma, she'd sure be proud, to have a kid like you. just let me ask you nurse, where do all the pills come from? And how do you know just when we're all supposed to get some? How come you don't bring them all at once, sure save a lot of time, y Maybe then we'd have more time to talk at night before ya go. You always seem to know when I'm feeling at my worst, Ya know if I weren't a boy, I'd wanna be a nurse. You must be in a hurry, tho' ya never 'peer to be. Ifm really glad that you've spent this much time with me. I won't ask you no more questions, nurse, I'm sort of tired tonight. My tummy feels real funny and my head just don't feel right. But before you slip so quietly out and turn the lights down low, Would you stay in here while I say my prayers tonight before you go? And just let me ask you this, nurse, before I shut my eyes, Do you ever get two big tears in your eyes, before a person dies? There ain't a reason in this world why you should wanna cry. Mama keeps tellin' me that I'Il soon be well, but I know it isn't true, But don't worry, nurse, when I get to heaven, I'll save a place for you. ou know Addie Kratzer Stroud-graduate of 1919 There is nothing as exciting or as rewarding as choosing a difficult goal, working hard, and succeeding.
