f But no music can be played entirely in the treble clef. Sifting in and out of the melody are the more somber notes- lf you stand up for the right, you're from Rockingham High , and we find that the refrain is made deep and meaningful through the efforts of our student government association, through well organized classroom activities, and through the constant efforts of the administration to make our high school the best in the state. The theme of the Black and Gold remains the same, bu the modulations are many and varied as the music shifts and of our accomplishments. It drifts into a minor key when w give up before a job is finished, surges into a crescendo of triumph when the council reports a problem solved, and take on the vibrant tone of an organ when we pray, Let the words changes to match the mobility of our moods and the diversitftbax X X X N. S ,X Y If ff. X of my mouth and the meditations of my heart-. XX X X The staff of the 1951 Rocket for you the true meaning of your school song. We have tried to translate into pictures the grace notes of happiness, the bass chords of sobriety, the crescendos of victory, the diminuendos of defeat, the sharps, the flats, and the general harmony of your life in Rockingham High School. lt's September again and as the air takes on the crispness of autumn, the notes of the Black and Goldi' begin to flutter about your head like the first falling leaves. The haunt- ing refrain tugs relentlessly at your consciousness until we meet once more in the auditorium, and, heralded by a burst of eight hundred voices, the school year flings open like a welcoming door, behind il the high excitement, the kindling anticipation, the so many things to do. e are caught up by the infectious notes of the Black a Gold , and, borne along on the waves of its rhythm, we nt siastically join forces with hundreds of fellow students 2 d faculty members as we begin another year and become a rt of the bustle and activity that is so typical of Rocking- am High. And as we go about our daily tasks, the background music th : s an endless accompaniment- If you fight for black nd gold, you're from Rockingham High. Wfe hear it in the pound of running feet as R. H. S. scores another touchdown, in the clatter of the typewriter keys as the Hi-Light makes its deadline, in the click of the shutter as one by one we take the pictures which will record in the Rocket a year of our lives. The refrain swells and repeats itself as our band marches down the field with pulse quickening rhythm-a rhythm that is pick- ed up and underscored by the twirling skirts of the majorettes and by the IWISIS and turns of the cheerleaders' bodies. 1 n 0 ss S

She has the efficiency of dozens, dis- cipline at her fingertips, and a sense of humor to match it all. Her contributions to Rockingham High have been many and varied. In two short years she has built our band into one of the top ranking organizations in North Carolina and has won for herself the love and respect of the entire student hody. We dedicate this, our 1951 Rocket, to Mrs. Theo Smith as a gesture of appreciation to one who has made school spirit a living force in our high school.
