The haunt- ing refrain tugs relentlessly at your consciousness until we meet once more in the auditorium, and, heralded by a burst of eight hundred voices, the school year flings open like a welcoming door, behind il the high excitement, the kindling anticipation, the so many things to do. e are caught up by the infectious notes of the Black a Gold , and, borne along on the waves of its rhythm, we nt siastically join forces with hundreds of fellow students 2 d faculty members as we begin another year and become a rt of the bustle and activity that is so typical of Rocking- am High. And as we go about our daily tasks, the background music th : s an endless accompaniment- If you fight for black nd gold, you're from Rockingham High. Wfe hear it in the pound of running feet as R. H. S. scores another touchdown, in the clatter of the typewriter keys as the Hi-Light makes its deadline, in the click of the shutter as one by one we take the pictures which will record in the Rocket a year of our lives. The refrain swells and repeats itself as our band marches down the field with pulse quickening rhythm-a rhythm that is pick- ed up and underscored by the twirling skirts of the majorettes and by the IWISIS and turns of the cheerleaders' bodies. 1 n 0 ss S f But no music can be played entirely in the treble clef. Sifting in and out of the melody are the more somber notes- lf you stand up for the right, you're from Rockingham High , and we find that the refrain is made deep and meaningful through the efforts of our student government association, through well organized classroom activities, and through the constant efforts of the administration to make our high school the best in the state. The theme of the Black and Gold remains the same, bu the modulations are many and varied as the music shifts and of our accomplishments. It drifts into a minor key when w give up before a job is finished, surges into a crescendo of triumph when the council reports a problem solved, and take on the vibrant tone of an organ when we pray, Let the words changes to match the mobility of our moods and the diversitftbax X X X N. We have tried to translate into pictures the grace notes of happiness, the bass chords of sobriety, the crescendos of victory, the diminuendos of defeat, the sharps, the flats, and the general harmony of your life in Rockingham High School. As you turn these pages, we hope there will come to you a deeper realization of the privileges and responsibilities which await you if you fight for black and gold. has attempted to interpret ...-- ,af iii...-ff 14 I X i rf f X 1: X 1 Qi ' li: if 4' J , 1 if , ,V f ff 4, fe iii' -1 T2-'FIV 'wtf 1 ' l iigiiif - fAf+1 f:Qi, s',iE3, rw? ew -34922 7. She has the efficiency of dozens, dis- cipline at her fingertips, and a sense of humor to match it all. Her contributions to Rockingham High have been many and varied. In two short years she has built our band into one of the top ranking organizations in North Carolina and has won for herself the love and respect of the entire student hody. We dedicate this, our 1951 Rocket, to Mrs. Theo Smith as a gesture of appreciation to one who has made school spirit a living force in our high school. N 1 A H 5- . 'vy,,. 5 ,-iy imb. An industrial arts department has been added to our curriculum as well as an advanced course in mathematics. Our guid- ance program is gaining new strength, our attendance record has improved, and a city-wide building program is well underway. Our administration is made of the right sort of stuff, and we're proud to join hands with them in their efforts to make R. H. S. the best high school in the state. if yt. is ff. of MR. J. E. CULTURE IN ENGLISH 12 C Q55 0149 We're dreaming dreams of bygone days, And teardrops fill our eyes As we recall those happy days We spent at Rockingham High. Those days of golden memories Will linger through the years, And smiles you see upon our faces Are there to hide the tears. Our teachers, classmates, and our friends Are links within a chain We trust will hold throughout the years Until we meet again. CLASS WILL We, the members of the Senior Class of the year of our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred and fifty' one, in this our last will and testament, fondly recall our most treasured traits and possessions. Many times we have stood firm under the banner of black and gold and fought for the name it represents. They are discussing the death of a promi- nent New York banker, Mr. Joseph Denson Wheliss. It seems quite debatable as to whether Mr. Wheliss will make his home in the heavens or-elsewhere. Look, Gabriel, here he comes at last! What delayed you, Mr. Wheliss?', My guardian angel, Buddy Hughes, and I had a little argument as to whether I could bring my money up or notf' Mr, Wheliss, are you ready to go into the conference cloud to decide your place- ment? We can't keep Devil Ganey waiting much longer. '4Sure, what have I to worry ahoutiw The figures disappear with the confer- ence cloud. The mist clears and we hear Devil Caney say: Candidate Wheliss, live been reading over your records and so far they are quite satisfactory, therefore, I have no claims on you. l would like to hear how you came here. Well, sir, it was like this. I was at Waters' Night Club last night-you know the one that features .lim Hicks and his Band from the Sticks. By the way, three of my old classmates play in the band, Bruce Krupa,, Kanipe and lack Horrl on the saxophone, and Leslie Horne blowing the trumpet. They featured Julia Ratliff from Taylor's Burlesque Show, who, ac- companied by Mary Carter Seawell, sang a torch song by Charles Warner and sur- prised me so I had a heart attack. Every- body thought I had a chance to live, since I was in the eliicient hands of Dr. James P. Bazemore of Herring Memorial Hospitalg but when the ambulance driver, Fish Richardson, took a sharp turn up a one- way street, that finished mef' Well, you pass inspection, but letls look through my special detector and see what your former classmates are doing . . . Isn't that the huge skyscraper Tadlockis Con- struction Company built with the famous steeple jack, Mary Dawkins, and her as- sistants, the Davis girls, doing all the work? Yes, I'm proud to see it turned out so well,'l replied Mr. Wheliss. But look at all the commotion on the twenty-fourth Hoorln That,s Dr. Rollins, the dentist, chasing patient Dick Sessoms. It looks bad, because there comes Dr. Naomi Climber in for the tackle . . . Uopsl there go his teeth! What a superb job! NYes, my class turned out quite well, lVIr. Devil. We even have movie stars. Bobby Bagan discovered a wonderful cow- boy and cowgirl team in Ride ,em Rough Leigh and Mow ,em Down Kistler. Also out in Hollywood we have loyce Yates and Faye Henry coaching stars in the Southern drawlf' '4Yes, it seems that those you mention have turned out all right, but there has been some discussion between St. Peter and me as to whether bar tender, Earl Gattis, and William F ielrls, who racks balls at Terryis Pool Room, will make the grade or flunk into my Paradise of Ovens. Eh, St. Peter?', 6'Yes, but there is one who I wish would hurrry and come up, for I feel so sorry for him since his loved one married a soldierf' 'al believe that was Hoot Bellamy, wasnlt it, St. Peter? The last time I saw him he had opened up a lonely hearts club. CLASS PROPHECY That's right, Mr. Wheliss, but he isn't the only one that had his little trouble but found another way out. You remember your friends, Bill Williams and Harold Mr:Enlire-well, they gave up hope for a certain someone and started raising Irises as a full time job, and did you know that Charles Dyson and Margaret Baxley finally settled down to married life? Yes, Saint Peter, I got a card from them just before I passed away and they said they were raising little bulldogsf' SL Peter, don't you think it,s getting a little chilly up here? I can very easily start a nice hot fire! No, Devil, you can save that till you get home. Geraldine Liskeis blush supplies quite enough heat. All right, I can't even win an argument with you angels, so letls go on with the discussion. Well, Devil Caney, E. Steele and A. Thomas, a great team, have invented a new device for milking cows. There is a music box installed in the machine which plays 'You May Think You're Only a Drop in the Bucket, but You're Really the Cream in My Coffeef Another business enterprise which has done much to build up the morale of the American home front is the pastry shop owned and managed by Shep- ard, Brice, and Parker. The cakes are being sent to the Martian front to be used as ammunition. The cooks, Marilyn Mc- Donald, Betty Webb, Libby Bolton, Frances Dobbins, Betty Van. Whitted, and Annie Belle Bearden have all been awarded Con- gressional Medals of Honor. Well, I guess those benefactors of man- kind will pass through the pearly gates when they get here. What about all those beauty queens you had in your class? Do I stand a chance to get any of them? '4Well, Devil, let me see . . . the other day there was a beauty contest and Barbara Horne won a title. She was chosen The Girl I'd Like Most to Get on a Slow Boat to Chinaf, It was no trouble for Judge Anderson to pick her as he is quite ex- perienced along that line. Betty Terry, .lean Liske, Pat Allen and Doris Yates are modeling for Hudson and Hawkins, manu- facturers of those famous False Teeth with the Friendly Grin. The shop has quite an efficient staff with Boots Parnell as advertis- ing manager and ferry Brooks as designer. There are a few who are still trying to lose those extra pounds. Peggy Maples, Pat Dawkins, and Margaret Goodwin opened up a Turkish Bath with Marshall Currie as their chief masseurf' So far, Mr. Wheliss, I believe St. Peter has all claims on your classmates. Oh! we almost forgot, it's near kick-off time for that game of the year between those rival teams, Cognac and Old Hundred. Letis turn on the television set and watch the game . . . Here's that sports announcer, Bill Stern Hamm announcing the game. Look at Wild Bill McKinnon coach of the Cognac Cats pacing up and down the side- lines. Across the field I can see Coach Jesse James Poplin giving the Old Hun- dred Dogs a pep talk. The principals of the two schools, Polly McDonald of Cognac and Betty MacDonald of Old Hundred, seem to be comparing the teams. Listen to the commercial! The game is being brought to us through the courtesy of Hicks and Hoyle Trucking Company. They have an eflicient group of drivers, Everett Blue, Billy Snuggs, and Joyce Knox, running the route from Cognac to Old Hundred. '6But here's the kick-off-Watch that ball . . . straight into the hands of Sara Ussery Sweeny . . .,' lContinuecl on Page 1011 E...THE CLASS OF ' 1 It was September 194-7 - the Freshman Class, the future Class of '51, entered Rock- ingham High School. From that day to this, our class has had that brisk, get-up-and-go spirit. We were a little bewildered that first year, but we soon became adjusted, and before June of '48 rolled around, everyone knew we were here to stay. In our adjustment, we took part in extra-curricular activities, in fact, we made ourselves quite at home. Our Sophomore year held many things in store for us. We did a tremendous job on the 194.8 Polio Campaign. We were on top with our contribution and won a radio which we gave to the school at the close of the year. Time for Junior-Senior rolled around and those of us who had been elect- ed to act as waiters, waitresses, hat check girls and doormen attended the banquet. lt was a thrill-our first Junior-Senior. School was drawing to a close and the Secretary of the Student Council was elect- ed from the Sophomore Class. One late spring morning, there were wild shrieks of joy and a fluttering and fanning of yellow envelopes. It was that fateful day when the new Beta Club pledges received telegrams inviting them to become members of the Rockingham Chapter. We had one of the largest groups of pledges in a long time. That next fall, we were unbearable to live with! We could hardly control the energy surging within us. We were Juniors-the notch just below the top! We were too busy to concentrate on much except the Junior- Senior banquet we were to hold for the Seniors at the end of March. The theme was set-a cruise to Hawaii. We hardly think the Class of '50 will forget their cruise to Hawaii on the S. S. Rockaholag as it is hardly possible that we, the Class of '51, will forget. ln the midst of swaying palms, grass skirts, canoes, the tempo for a thrilling evening was set. The time is now . . . We were dignified Seniors! Those first weeks we were on a never ending merry-go-round. The Rocket Staff was elected, superlatives were chosen, our class song written, and, amid arguments and fist fights, the class rings were ordered. On December 8 the curtain rose on our Senior Play, Girl Shy. lt was a huge success, and we were so proud! Things seemed to happen so fast-mid-term exams were held, we were guests at Junior-Senior instead of hosts and hostesses, it was nearly time for graduation. We presented the spring plays, written by members of our own class. We had raised enough money for our class gift. The 1951 Rocket came out and we really felt as if the year was at a close. Exams?-and then that moment when we walked down the aisle, our class, to receive our sheep skins. As we bring the history of our Class of '51 to a close, we realize that the things we have done cannot be valued in terms of individual accomplishments. Whatever we have gained has been the result of whole- hearted cooperation, and from that spirit of working together have been forged the ties which will forever bind us together, as the Class of '51. At the first of the game the Rockets scored on u long pass front Jimmy Ilazemore to Owen Cainey to put them ahead at half time by a score of I4 to 13. In the third quarter they went ahead to stay on touch- downs by Bill McLean and Bill McKinnon. The Rockets had played a good hall club. Griffin was later runner-up in the Georgia state Hnals. CH ERAW Cheraw was the next to fall to the powerful Rockingham team. The Rockets easily defeated this weak team in a game played under the adverse conditions of a wet and muddy field caused by a steady downpour of rain. The game was highlighted by the playing of the second team of the Rockets. Alton Coble, a second string fullback, made a beautiful 65-yard touchdown run. In this game the first team played less than one-half of the ball game. The final score was 39 to 0. LUMBERTON The Rockets were handed their first defeat of the season 19 to I3 by Lumberton. The game was played before a huge crowd on home grounds. Coach Dwight Hols- houser's star halfbuck. Nicky McKeithan. was too hot on passes to stop. After being outplayed for two quarters and behind I9 to 0, the Rockets caught fire and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and were threaten- ing for the winning tally when the final whistle blew. WADESBORO Recovering from their previous defeat by Lumberton the Rockets defeated Wadesboro 28 to I3 to win the first conference game of the season. The ball game was all tied up the first half and then the Rockets pushed over three touchdowns to sew the game up. lflugene Bellamy sparked the line in their attack. Wadeshoro scored its second touchdown against the second team of Rockingham. CLINTON The next victim in the path of the Rockets wus Clinton and they rolled over them 31 to U. All-stater llill McKin- non really showed his heels to the Clinton boys. lIe made touchdown runs of I02. 60. and 45 yards. He scored three times in the first half and once in the third quarter. Following this game Xleliinnon was named back of the weeku by the Charlotte News. SANFORD A determined Sanford team handed the Rockets their first. conference loss I3 to 0. lt wus the only game in which the Rockets failed to score in the entire season. Although the Rockets held considerable edge in statistics, Sanford had the points. Twice Rockingham was inside Sanford's five-yard line only to fumble. lt was only twice that Sanford crossed the Rockets, fifty-yard line and it was then that they scored. Francis Waters led the attack of the line. I DUNN The Rockets were determined not to be thrown out of the conference aml they handed llunn a 33 to 27 defeat in a home game. The Rockets were ahead and in com- plete control the entire game. The linemen played a great game and especially Charles llyson. lil the closing minutes of the last quarter Dunn threw a scare into Coaches llutsler and Mulkey by scoring two quick touchdowns against the second and third teams, but the first team returned to the game and controlled the ball until the Final whistle. HAMLET ln the first half of the game with their old rival. Hamlet. the Rockets had a tough ball game on their hands. The first. quarter was tied up 7 to 7 and it was not until the second quarter that liill McKinnon broke loose and behind fine blocking ran 67 yards for a touchdown to put Rockingham ahead at the half H to 7. ln the third ll v'n-e go! n 'I'-E-.rl-lil . . . There was no stopping Rockingham then and the final score. 33 to 7. was the most decisive defeat that Rockingham has ever handed Hamlet in football. ln the Charlotte News Lcntz Franklin was named lineman of the weeku after this game. LAURINBURG The Rockets next met Laurinburg and played probably the most perfect football game in the history of the team. Both of the teams and coaches were out to win this game. The Rockets carrie out on top 40 to 7 and avenged defeats by Laurinburg for the two past seasons. The team was led by the 200-pound driving fullback, Bill McLean. and the running of hack, Earl Terry, with the flawless quarterbacking of ,Iimmy Bazemore. Co- captain Owen Ganey and Bill Williams showed up well in the line. The first team scored each time they gained possession of the ball and held a half time lead of 33 to 0. The Rockets scored again in the third quarter with Laurinburg receiving their lone score in the fourth quarter against the second team. This win enabled the Rockets to wind up in a tie with Sanford for the con- ference championship. FORT MILL The next game was the much heralded homecoming game with Fort Mill. The game was preceded by a colorful downtown parade the day before and the elec- tion of the King and Queen of Homecoming. Each senior letterman had his good looking sponsor at the game with him. The team did not disappoint the huge crowd which attended and downed the fighting Fort Mill team 27 to 0. As usual the team, sparked by the quarterbacking of Jimmy Bazemore. played an excellent ball garlic but they seemed to be saving most of their steam for the all important Sanford game the next week. The homecoming celebration came to a close with a successful semi-formal dance Saturday night where the King and Queen were honored. SANFORD With the District title at stake Rockingham met thc Sanford team for the play off in the Rockingham Park. Sanford opened the game with a quick, 60-yard march to pay dirt. The Rockets went wild in thc last hall to score four touchdowns making the score 25 to 6 and receiving the first District title in football in twenty- three years. Stars were numerous, but outstanding in the line was Johnny Gore who continually thrcw thc Sanford boys for losses. Hill Mt-Kinnon and Bill M1-l.can paced the Rockingham backs. LUMBERTON The Rockets again met the team which handed them their first defeat in the season and the outcome of this game would determine the regional champions. The hard charging Rockingham linc rushed Nicky Mc- Keithan so fast that he completed only 2 passes in the entire ball game. lt was the battering line that won the game with Ted Poplin and George Wallace leading thc assault. The backs, Jimmy llazemore, Bill McKinnon. Bill McLean, and Hugh Wallace, did a fine job of carry- ing the ball and when the game was over Rockingham had had its revenge to the tune of 28 to 6. HENDERSON Rockingham then moved into the Eastern class AA semi- finals with Henderson. The game was played on Thanks- giving Day on Henderson's home field. lt was a bitterly fought game with Rockingham losing 13 to 7. The mask of dignity is dropped and one of laughter and tears takes its place. Amid the changing of robes, the congratulations, the exchanging of gifts, you pause to look about you. The room is almost empty now-there are the caps, one on each desk, the gay orange tassels gone now to take their places hetwee the musty leaves of scores of scrap books-there is a prog m lying forgotten-the wrappings from a gift- Y 1 turn to leave and pause for a moment in the hall under e clock. You can remember the many congregations here at ces , the rushes to read the important announcements. You pause once more under the clock, and as you glance at its familiar face, you suppress an inner desire to turn its hands back-back minutes, hours, days-back, back, to September, 1947. Yes, the Seniors have gone from the circle, the sunshine o longer glitters on the pine needles, the happy chatter of voic s is replaced by echoes down a lonely hall. Surely we can find someone who will make his home with me. Well, Devil Ganey, we might consider my friends who travel with Capel's Carni- val. You might call them weird, but even they are not your type. I visited their show last week and saw Alvin Hamilton. He calls himself Zacharoni, the human projectile and does an act with lean Ellerbe and fanet Anderson, the flying saucers. Gaston Cox was there doing quite well selling Con- tented Frankfurters with Mauney's Mar- velous Mustard and he introduced me to the wild lady from Borneo, who revealed herself as Rose Everhart. She is thinking of becoming a double feature and is being tattooed with two of the world's great masterpieces - Blue Boyi' and Mona Lisa. lohnny Gore plays the role of the strong man and says he got his start strug- gling with Mrs. Garrett's English assign- ments. I was really surprised at the physical prowess he exhibited, but what really startled me was when Clarence Terry, the India Rubber Man, tied himself into knots and folded up into a valise before my very eyes. Ernestine Russell seemed a little bored being a snake charmerg she said the food was terrible. I imagine she was pleased with the ripe fruit thrown her during her per- formance. She was sharing a tent with the Siamese twins, ,leannine Easterling and Jean Carris. Jeannine was sulking because ,Ie-an insisted on eating Roquefort cheese and Jeannine claimed it gave her a head- ache. I left them in a better mood though, for I promised to send them Ioan Burgess's new book How to Bring Snownakes to the Boiling Point. I also told them about the trip Donnie Yates, senator from the state of Bewilderment, was planning. He is taking his space ship The Waddling Waddell with a crew of I. B. Rainwater, lack Gibson, and stenographers Frances Pope and Sue Thompson to study the composition of the moon. If it turns out to be green cheese theylre going to stay, due to the high cost of living on earth. So you see Devil Caney, I,lll afraid you have no claim on the Class of 351. When they approach the pearly gates they will have won the right to pass straight through. Not even the words of your wife, the former Carol Deane, can persuade me they deserve a place in your abode-but wait there are two who . . .U 'gYou mean-there's still hopefw Yes, I believe we can send you . . . yes, I'm sure we can . . .
