L-Zbeckcafion No name is more synonymous with progressive education in Rockingham, N. C. and Richmond County than that of L. 1. Bell, superintendent of the Rockingham City schools from 1906-194-8 and superintendent of Richmond County schools from 1916-1947. Mr. Bell was born at Kings Mountain, N. C. on January 26, 1878 and was graduated from the University of North Carolina June 1, 1898. He started his teaching career in the Cleveland County schools at the age of twenty and remained there for four years. In 1902, he came to Rockingham as principal of the city schools and continued in that capacity until 1906 when he was elected superintendent. Although he received many offers from other places, Mr. Bell continued his work as superintendent of schools in Rockingham until June 30, 194-8 when he resigned because of poor health. Under the guiding hand of one of the State's ablest men, the Rockingham schools have grown to their present standing of one of the top ranking systems of the state. Quiet and unassuming in manner, Mr. Bell has never sought the limelight, but his life has truly been given in Service to others. As a small gesture of appreciation of him and the great service he has rendered-a service which will be felt throughout the years to come-we wish to dedicate this, our 1949 ROCKET, to L. J. Bell. 6

no ogwe We all are actors and actresses. Our high school days make up our first major production. We all belong to the cast! From our first wide-eyed joining of this big drama until the bitter-sweet ending of the final performance, each has his role to play. The roles are many and vicarious in nature. In the plot there are moments of happiness, suspense, pathos, and laughter. There is a well-balanced inter- mingling of gayety and seriousness of action, but each role portrays Character. For some of us, our part is endingg for others, it is just be- ginning. We Seniors pause to look back on what we have doneg you under-classmen are looking forward to what is to come--the four happy years which will do much toward making professionals out of amateurs. Remember as you open this, the 194.9 ROCKET. that . . . As the years roll on in the march of time, Each pictured here, and each little line That is written now in these years-the best, Will be a part of your treasure chest. The performance is about to begin. The house lights dim, the babble of voices dies out, and the footlights flash on . . . 8
