C. and Richmond County than that of L. 1. Bell, superintendent of the Rockingham City schools from 1906-194-8 and superintendent of Richmond County schools from 1916-1947. Mr. Bell was born at Kings Mountain, N. C. on January 26, 1878 and was graduated from the University of North Carolina June 1, 1898. He started his teaching career in the Cleveland County schools at the age of twenty and remained there for four years. In 1902, he came to Rockingham as principal of the city schools and continued in that capacity until 1906 when he was elected superintendent. Although he received many offers from other places, Mr. Bell continued his work as superintendent of schools in Rockingham until June 30, 194-8 when he resigned because of poor health. Under the guiding hand of one of the State's ablest men, the Rockingham schools have grown to their present standing of one of the top ranking systems of the state. Quiet and unassuming in manner, Mr. Bell has never sought the limelight, but his life has truly been given in Service to others. As a small gesture of appreciation of him and the great service he has rendered-a service which will be felt throughout the years to come-we wish to dedicate this, our 1949 ROCKET, to L. J. We all belong to the cast! From our first wide-eyed joining of this big drama until the bitter-sweet ending of the final performance, each has his role to play. The roles are many and vicarious in nature. In the plot there are moments of happiness, suspense, pathos, and laughter. There is a well-balanced inter- mingling of gayety and seriousness of action, but each role portrays Character. For some of us, our part is endingg for others, it is just be- ginning. We Seniors pause to look back on what we have doneg you under-classmen are looking forward to what is to come--the four happy years which will do much toward making professionals out of amateurs. Seven years have passed since we've been back home to the good old city of Rockingham, which is much bigger and better than it was in 1949, if that is possible. We settle back on the cushioned seat of the cab and gaze out in wonder at the changes that have taken place. nStep on it, driverfl says Ralph. As the cab driver looks around dis- gustedly, saying, 'LNever believed in being in too big a hurry. 'Slow but sure' is my mottofl we recognize him to be none other than Carl Parker, our former classmate. After a joyous reunion, we speed on through town, almost colliding with policeman lim Hudson. The cab pulls up before the magnifi- cent Levander Opera House . . . the third completely circular building designed by that nationally known architect, Glenn Watson. We have come home especially for this grand opening, so we are tense with the thrill of excitement. As we push through the crowd in our haste, we re- ceive a reproachful look from the door- man, who we later discover is Charles Speight. As Ira Ussery ushers us to our seats, he informs us to our delight that we are to sit next to Anne Nichols Pryce. Luck seems with us, for indeed it is turning out to be a real homecoming! The lights dim as the great conductor, ferry Long, slings his long hair back and leads lack Webb in a trumpet solo. The Hall echoes with the opening chord of the overture to the opera, Mc1ntyre,s Dream. Anne whispers that the house is filled with celebrities. As we gaze about, we see Charlese Allred, the nationally known ice skater, and her skating companion, Ashley Haywood. And yes, there is Charles McBride, president of C. R. S., arguing with Clegg Yates of N. B. C. over the Hair rights of the opera. We spot another familiar face and discover Catherine Hicks, head nurse at the Rich- mond County Memorial Hospital. With her are Doris Criscoe, designer of the world's most fashionable womenls hats, and Bobbie Bethune, the final word in interior decorating. Suddenly our attention is drawn back to the stage as we hear the lilting soprano voice of Peggy Ellerbe answering the melodious tenor of Jimmy Anderson in a ringing duet. Next we see Jessie Lou Saunders, Bessie Rorie, Rachel Cilzson and Hilda Maslce, ballet stars, do a wonderful and very dramatic number ac- companied by the Sullivan Choral Group. lsn't this grandll' . . . We hear a voice answer, Alt ain't so much.', We turn and see behind us Marilyn, Huxley and Ted Webb. Suddenly the curtain rings down on the final number and the aisles are crowded with people rushing to the Manager, Bill Burgess, to offer congratulations for a wonderful performance. When we finally reach the street. our attention is drawn to a huge lighted aerial billboard across from us proclaim- ing Pretty Boy Deal and Lucille Gardner as Paramount's latest dis- coveries. At Anne's suggestion, we next climb into a cab and head for the favorite hang-out-Mchaurinls Blue Room. As we stop for a red light, we notice a sign, lf you can't see, see mefl lt's the office of that new eye doctor, Gloria Crosby. Finally, we reach the Blue Room, check our coats with Edna Hardee, and find a table near the dance floor. Head Waiter, Forrest McBryde, takes our order and assures us that the Chef, Delmar Lassiter, will add all the trimmings. At a near-by table we see Rocking- hamis new Mayor, Martha Hutchinson, and the head of the city council, Earl Long. With them is .lolynne Watts, head dietitian for the uCarpenter Corporation -Foods for Moodsfl enior Com Mojo eo? Across from us at another table we recognize Coach George Little and his Rockingham University stars, Bill Mc- Intosh, Autie Carter, and Bill Goodman. The next sight to greet our eyes is Gene Davis, who, we understand, is try- ing desperately to find a cure for the receding forehead line. Our attention is now drawn to that captivating piano player, Frances Gar- rett. Marian Stevenson and fohn Mclver, the professional dancers, perform next. They are followed by the lovely song- bird, ,loan Haywood, who comes to the mike and sings the Deaver hit tune, Accountant's Blues . To add harmony, the Mills Brothers, Bobby and Lloyd, join in. As Powers' Model Pat McKenzie starts across the dance floor, she trips on a marble which falls from Playboy Leake,s pocket .... Hls there a doctor in the house? . . . Up rushes Dr. Richardson and with his lawyer R. L. Hinson, who follows fast just in case this is a case. His secretary, Audrey Dabbs, begins to take notes. Dorothy Brown is right on the job taking pictures for Life. The ambulance arrives and with it Doris Brown, assistant driver. By this time, our nerves are so shatter- ed that we wander over to the bar for a nlemonaden and discover Sammy Dob- bins is the bartender. Columnist Betty Faye Lowery finally pushes her way over to join us, and from her we learn further news. She tells us that Joyce Parker is now in the White77 house, that Thelma Ballard has just completed the writing of her first novel, and that Mollie Colvin is a trapeze artist. Naomi Smith is back at dear old Rockingham High as librarian and she has as her able assistant, Florence Col- lins. Dot Watkins is State Home Demon- stration Agent, and Robert .lones and Bruce Allen, two of the State's most progressive farmers, are well on their way to the perfection of their ushelledi' bean. Tommy 0,Brien has taken on the permanent job of playing Santa Claus each year at Gaddyis Five and Ten. A new attraction at Gene McNair's Service Station is the Ceme-Color television set on which Betty Thomas is playing glamour girl for Slatejs Creme Shampoo. Lois Collins has bought a rubber plan- tation in Africa and most of her products are bought by the Adams, Chewing Gum Factory. Professor J. T. Gathings is cur- rently on a lecture tour. With him is Elizabeth Dawkins, his ghost writer. Ruby Poston and her Red River Gals, sponsored by Inez Ramey's Pep and Vitality Tonic, are a new sensation at one of the local theaters. Bobbie Smith is our good-will ambassador to France. .lust as the party is breaking up, Earl Clark appears and talks us into buying a Currie and Currie Insurance policy. As we leave the Blue Room, we decide to stroll down the street. Whatls this? There is a long line in front of the Linton theater. Oh, no wonder, it's America's best-loved comedy team, Stancil and Rush in We're on Our Wayf' All this Rockingham night life is almost too much for us, but we can't miss this one .... But it looks as if we shall have to, for just as we step up to the ticket window, we are informed that even all standing room is sold out. We wander on down the street until we come to a beautiful fioral display in a shop window which bears the name plate, Leora West Shop. It is here that I drop my opera program and as Ralph picks it up, he shouts, What,s thisll' Yes, in our excitement we had failed to see Director, Mrs. Margaret Garrett, Business Manager, Miss Kay Crosland. W! In this, our last will and testament, we, the Class of I949, the old troupers in the drama of Life in R. H. S., do humbly will and bequeath our treasured roles, props, and scripts to our under- studies. The props are well worn, our roles have often been called eccentric ones, the script, so well suited to our in- dividual personalities, may have to be revised. However, the show must go on, and we hope that these bequests may enable our understudies to make next season's run as successful as ours has been. We leave with some regret the hard work and responsibilities that fall to any actors who play the roles of Seniors. We have approached each new role with our characteristic enthusiasm and opti- mism. We have played our parts, com- plaining sometimes when the lines be- came difficult and the business confusing, but growing through constant practice and glowing with pride each time some well-rehearsed scene drew applause from the audience. Now these roles fall to other hands. May you struggle and grow with them as we have done. May they be for you, as they have been for us, a con- stant source of enjoyment and personal development. ARTICLE I: We leave our sincere thanks to our directors for sticking by us. May the grey hairs we have from time to time given them be concrete re- minders of the Class of 749. ARTICLE II: To the rising Senior Class we bequeath our home rooms, IZA and 1213, our cherished circle, and our jeal- ously guarded front door-all hallowed places, for it was in these spots that we rehearsed our lines, assembled our props and awaited our cues. We also leave Mrs. Garrett and Miss Crosland although we will keep for ourselves the knowledge and advice they have so generously given. To all of our friends, we leave a feel- ing of deep affection and a final word of advice F- Act well your part, however small, and you will be rewarded ten- fold in honors and satisfaction. Infield In baseball the Rocks had a moderately successful 1943 season with the chief setback being lack of experience. The Rocks reached the conference play-off, but bowed to a powerful Sanford team which went on to the state finals. A lack of hitting power was one of the chief factors that kept the team from being a completely successful club. This fault, however, is expected to be remedied by a year's experience at the plate. All in all, the ,418 Rocks were a well-rounded, hard-working team which provided many thrilling games for anxious fans. R.H.S.... R.H.S.,.. R.H.S.... R.H.S... R.H.S..... R.H.S..,. R.H.S.,.. R.H.S..,. The storyls told-'the plot is unraveled to the very end. We join in the happy babble of voices and add our applause to the demand for one more curtain call-one more lifting of the maroon velvetfone more chance to creep back into those enchanting roles-one more postponement of the moment when the spell must be broken and We must return to reality. We blink for a moment in the glare of the house lights and try in vain to extricate our- selves from the threads of that plot which has held us captive for so long. The crowd is moving out now-the aisles are filled4but the illusion persists. The atmosphere of the play clings to us, the words of the actors ring in our earsgthe play is over, but we will never be quite the same. Everything is serene. Yet there is a memory-a mingling of footsteps, laughter, happy voices-a memory ringing throughout the halls, in the auditorium, in the class rooms. Something never to be forgotten. Suddenly our minds Hash back to the bright September morning four years ago when we first became a part of this large cast. How important it seemed. What wonderful things were ahead! We were Freshmen at Rockingham High School. We were char- acters in this drama which was to last four well-spent years. We began our work- the usual organization of homerooms, the election of ofiicers, changing classes. We began to get the feel of all that went on in this performance. We belonged! . . . Yes, in a few brief minutes we relive our past. Everything comes back to us. We remember the first time we received an award for athleticsifootball, basketball, or baseball. And our first Junior-Senior Banquet-how utterly thrilled we were! We lived in a mad whirl of making invitations and favors, planning the menu, practicing the entertainment, and decorating the gym. And wasn't it beautiful! And the Senior plays-the odor of grease paint, powder, and cold cream, the signing of programs and playbooksg the butterflies before making your first entrance, the warm feeling upon realizing the play is a success. We remember how eager we were to read the first edition of the Hi-Light each year. What pleasure it gave each of us to see his name in print! The Annual-even now we smile when we think of the different colors it was supposed to have been. Then there were the pep rallies in chapel every Friday morning, and the snake dances before the most important games of the year. But most of all, we remember the hilarious shouts of joy when we learned we had passed our exams. . . . Now we stand in the same place we have stood so many times before-under the clock in the hall. We move slowly to the Senior homerooms, from Mrs. Carrett's to Miss Croslandis. Only now they are not here to congratulate us for a fine piece of Work or to correct us when correction is due. Nor is Miss Finley seated at her desk to extend a helping hand or to give an encouraging smile. The sighs of yesterday float through the halls, and we find that we cannot speak. Our voice will not obey our command. Our throats refuse to let one sound escape. Yes, the setting is the same-but it is no longer our setting. And the stage props are exactly as we left them-but they are not for our use. For we have given our last performance, we have made our final curtain call. Now we are graduates of Rocking- ham High School. Now we must leave this stage and find a new one. We will never again all be cast in the same production, but in separate ones. We will use the knowl- edge that has been passed on to us from our most capable directors, we will take our parts in the drama of everyday life, and we will act our parts well. 88 Ah Y W X E, A vf .Qu Aopreciafion I i The sponsors of any play are indispensable individuals. We, of Rockingham High School, have had unusually interested and generous ones. A '6Sure, I'll huy an adf, This spirit has assured the publication of our 1949 ROCKET, the playbill of a hit performance. For you, our sponsors, we, the cast, join with the audience in a hearty round of applause! 90 157' 5.-gc vi .' 41 , . :':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':': ' :CZ ZF ..,.... . . . , -'! .g.'Z'I'I'I-I'Z-I-I'I'I'I- 9529 .:. :T -Ji?-iq A ,,. ..-:r:51EI:-115122E2EfE2- Q, If-32' ' 322:21f:1:l:3:3:3:i:1:i:l Lf :Riffs C ..':-:-:4:,:-:3:3:?:5:f ' A 'ET' 5.54415 Nm.,-.5.g:g:gf5:1:::g:i5:-2' , f E ?aQ'?-fl -5' .-.-7-:-:f:5:5:f:f:1:?:1:2:f:1:5:1 'L' 'S , .
