We see the ideals of self government in the friendship between students and faculty members, in the cooperative spirit which backs the efforts of the central officers, and in the pride which bids us abide by the rules We have made. We see its principles at Work in the friendly associations on the campus at lunch time and in the good sportsmanship displayed at athletic contests. It is Written on the face of every student because he is a part of it. By the publication of this record of our high school days, we Wish to honor those students who, in 1922, formed our first consti- tution and the hundreds of students since that time, who, in upholding this constitution, have set an example for other schools in North Carolinag and to pay tribute to those ideals of self government which have sent forth scores of men and Women to be leaders in our com- munity. We wish to dedicate our 1948 Rocket to the ideals and principles of student cooperative government. Here it is April 1, 1960 and you have with you again your on-the- spot commentator, Shirley Cowbarn, bringing you the high-spots in the news and speaking to you from Shangri- La. While glancing through the records today, 1 came across a portion of my files on graduating classes. My interest was immediately drawn to the achieve- ments of a certain high school class of Rockingham, North Carolina-a city of only 100,000 population. It will be inter- esting to our listeners to know that so many of our famous men and women of today are graduates of this class-the class of 19418. Washington, D. C. this morning proudly received new Congressman Robert Hutchinson, a graduate of this class. Upon his arrival he waved a greet- ing to his life-long friend, Neal Cadieu, who was seated in the press-box having just returned from watching John Moss successfully coach his team, HMoss' Lossesfl to victory through one of the seasonis toughest games against his old schoolmate, Wesley Smith, who coached the opposing team, Wesley's Wrecksf, Report has just come in that Mary fo Phillips, nationally known Dean of one of our foremost women's colleges, the Sadie Hawkins University, is vacationing in Cuba. She is accompanied by .laniee Covington and .lacqueline Harrison, who are her assistants. The Museum of Fine Arts has added to its collection another priceless portrait, 'aGeorgia Boyv, which was painted by the prominent artist, Martha Haywood. At the unveiling, such notables as Farrell Hardin, Clifton Andrews, and Bobby Melton were present. The famous woman doctor, Norma Gwen Baxley, and her assistant, Mildred Terry, last night performed a delicate spinal operation on Hal Currie, saving his life after a seemingly fatal accident in which the bus he was driving over- turned. Lewis Robertson administered vital first-aid on the way to the hospital in the ambulance driven by Ned Yates. Wealthy financiers, Leo McKay and Lester Adeoch, had previously donated funds which made experiments on this type of operation possible. They have done much toward furthering medical knowledge through their generous con- tributions for research. And now for Hollywood doings! It is rumored that Ida Hamer is in the lead for the Academy Reward for her out- standing performance in her latest picture, MSkyline Terrorsf' in which she co-starred with dashing Tommy Taylor. Marian Bullard is signed up to do the leading part in the forthcoming pro- duction of Charles Brown's School Days, co-starring Jimmy Ratliff, and produced byT. G. Long and Bruce Gailes. . . . Bobbie Sue Milliken has accepted a position as model for the Glenn White Photographic Agency . . . Entertainer Geraldine Brand is now making a person- al disappearance tour of the country, accompanied by her secretary, Carleen Wadlcins. After many years, Rockingham, North Carolina has completed its Dorothea Andrews Memorial Hospital, and the city takes pride in announcing that the medical staff is headed by Drs. Daniel Robinson and Adele fones, both dis- tinguished in the Held of surgery. Head nurse will be Mary Elizabeth Irvin and her assistant, Carolyn Horne- Isabelle Williams, Virginia Watts, and .loyce Sanford of the Medical Society were present at the dedication, and a speech of appreciation was made by Alta Clem- mons, mayor of the city- Now for a word from our Sponsor: 4'At this time we should like to pause to inform you that it is the Elbert Penegar Wrecker Company that makes this program possible. Remember our motto, 'You wreck and we rescue.' C4555 Mglg gg?-Cgoniinaeci In New York today, the HU. S. S. Tough Knightn was christened by .lose- phine Wentz, noted author of 'aThe Life of Sinclair Allen . Bruce Howell received his commission as Skipper .... An incident of interest at the christening happened when one of the spectators, Willie fones, fell in the Bay. However, he was immediately rescued by Herbert Whitley. Fire made considerable set-back early this morning to the work being done by the Archie McDonald Construction Company on the Umpire State Building. Fireman Forrest MCBfjfll8 is the hero of the day for his valiant rescue of the company's secretary, Clara Little, from her office on the forty-ninth floor of the burning building. Now let's have a little news from the sunny spots in the South .... Henry Rivers has announced the formal open- ing of his new resort, MDew Drop Innfl located on Boydis Lake. lMelton, that is.l One of the celebrities at the opening was George Little, famous coach at Notre Dame. Construction on the Hudson Bridge has been retarded due to geological con- ditions which had been previously prophesied by Marvin Watts, publisher of Watts, Newsf' Washingtonis Foreign Department has announced that it will send Secretaries Georgia Wrape and Kathleen McDonald to the American Embassy in France. While on the foreign subject, I might add that Lydia McCroskey and lris llloore are sailing for South America early next month as good will ambas- sadors from the United States. It has been announced that the famous explorer, Conrad Peek, has discovered Capps, Peak, which he named after his assistant. Accompanying him on his pres- ent trip is Mary Sue King, noted deer hunter- The nationis most outstanding woman detective, Essie fSherlochj Dawkins, scored another triumph yesterday when she apprehended a shoplifter walking off with the safe. The shoplifter was sighted by floorwalker Wilma Sanford in the Gainey and Ganey Department Store here in Shangri-La. Folks, I had intended to have Mrs. Margaret Garrett and Miss Kay Cros- land, whom I see in the audience, come up and say a few words on behalf of the class of '4-85 but I see my time is up, so I'll sign off for now. W We, the class of 194-3, are sorry that the time has come for us to depart from the class rooms and campus of Rocking- ham High School. In order that our friends, teachers, and the campus as a whole may not be left wholly destitute of our presence, we leave behind in this, our last will and testament, some of our treasured traits and possessions. The fact that we must relinquish them to unappreciative minors who will perhaps never realize the true value of our bequests adds greatly to our grief. Perhaps many do not realize fully the real part the bus drivers of our school play. The eleven drivers cover with their buses a total average daily mileage of 430 miles, and the average number of pupils they transport daily is 1085. The schools served by these buses in addition to the three Rockingham City Schools are Roberdel Grammar School, Cordova Grammar School, Crosland Grammar School, and Rohanen Grammar School. The drivers are responsible for the care of the buses. They report each day the condition of the buses and ask for the County Mechanic if there is any repair need. They are required to make a report to the principal of the school at the end of each school month. Each driver must be 16 years old and have a driver7s license and a Bus Driver's Certificate Card. He must pass a written examination and a road test. These tests are administered by a representative of the North Carolina Division of Highway Safety in cooperation with the North Carolina State Board of Education. Furthermore, each driver must be a good citizen of his school and one who can take responsibility. The drivers of the Rockingham High School buses are cooperative and courteous. They are doing an excellent job of transporting the children safely in all conditions of weather. b . 63 QBQACMQ Margaret Allen, Jimmy Anderson, Ralph Benoy, Jimmy Cole, Gloria Crosby, Frances Garrett, Ashley Haywood, Martha Haywood, Robin Hinson, Martha Hutchinson, Robert Hutchinson, Earl Long, Henry Rivers, Lewis Robertson, Glenn Watson, Glenn White, Clegg Yates. 'm Q-fi 6'Ll elfUe . . . f As the end of our high school days draws near, we pause for a moment in reminiscence. It was just four years ago we became a part of Rockingham High School- As freshmen, we felt a bit confused in the new world we had entered, but not for long. With the spirit of friendliness so characteristic of Rockingham High, the upper class- men made us feel that we were an important part of the school. Friendships with faculty and students were soon formed, and these friendships have lasted and will continue to last through the years. Each year has brought new joys, new experiences. Each day has been a new page in our livese-pages filled with the happy days in chorus, the lusty cheering at the football, basketball, and baseball games, and the frantic last-minute 'fcrammingn for exams-pages filled with the excitement over the Junior-Senior prom,' and that indescribable thrill of anticipation at the curtain call of our fall and spring dramatic productions--pages filled with both work and play. Yes, the pages have turned swiftly on through the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior yearsfand now we realize that the book has ended. As we close the book, we find ourselves taking again a few last glimpses. We see the empty hallsfsoon to be ringing with the laughter and chatter of those who will fill our footsteps- We glance out at the auditorium, and even though the seats are now vacant, we recall the many mornings we started off the day there with a good word or thought. We observe Miss Finleyis office, but now, even the office where we sometimes had to umake our 'reckoningn seems like a true friend. We walk into Mrs. Garrett's and Miss Crosland's rooms, where we finally reached the top rung of the ladder. It was here that we really enjoyed our senior privileges. Finally, we stroll outside around the circle, as we have done so many times before, and gaze out over the football field, now silent, with the shadows of the tall pines outlined against the evening sun. Then as we turn and see the folds of old glory rippling against the cloudless blue, a strange feeling comes over us. A feeling mingled with both sorrow at our leaving and joy over being a part of that which we leave behind us. To each of our teachers, who have been so tolerant and understanding, and to Miss Finley who has so patiently guided our footsteps, we say au revoirf' To the classmates we leave behind, knowing they too feel the loyalty and gratitude to their alma mater that we feel, we say uso-long. As we leave our circle at Rockingham High, we face the challenge of the future squarely and optimistically, for beyond the veiled portals of the future lies a goal for everyone of us-a goal we shall strive to attain with all that is in us. We came to learn, we go forth to serve! 78 .Q 'ffilfgw -wi 'Sf 'EE' 1,1 ::.p.. 1, . 1 V in-s W e sg , .. af? 'E ,sky WM '- 1 A ,P wfiviih' K 5, Q sb: 1, Q K X Jn I . .
